Super-slick Saints stand firm
St Kilda amplified its final-eight credentials for this year with a creditable 13-point win against reigning Wizard Cup premier Adelaide in a thrilling finish at AAMI Stadium yesterday. The super-slick Saints always had the Crows' measure, leading by 25, 26 and 32 points at the first three breaks, until the Crows staged a rousing revival with four goals, including a nine-pointer by Kris Massie, early in the last quarter to trim their deficit to just five points . . . Collectively, though, St Kilda looked a better side than its 13-point win suggested, with Luke Ball, Robert Harvey, Austinn Jones and Lenny Hayes piling up more than 20 disposals each. Riewoldt, Xavier Clarke, Nick Dal Santo, Stephen Powell and Brendon Goddard also contributed regularly.

Fast start sets up Saints
St Kilda put on a polished display that will give Saints fans reason for optimism this year and star-in-the-making Luke Ball put in an eye-catching performance with his 27-disposal and one-goal effort earning him best-on-ground honours and prompting praise from coach, Grant Thomas. "We were very, very keen to win, we knew it would be a hard and tough game," said coach Thomas. "We don't underestimate Adelaide and we're very pleased to come away with a win. It gives us a greater degree of confidence to go into next week (against Richmond)." Thomas said that he was comfortable with the heightened expectations surrounding the club in 2004.

Cream of the crop
Burke, now an assistant coach with the Saints, is an enormous fan (of Nick Dal Santo). "He's got extraordinary vision," he said. He told a training-track yarn of how Dal Santo, on the run through centre half-forward, had two leading options from full-forward and one backman. As Dal Santo entered his kicking stride, the backman chose to run with one of the forwards. "And Dal, at the last second, looked up, spotted which one was free and adjusted his kick. His skills are that good, he hit the bloke on the chest," Burke said. "That vision is hard to teach. That composure is inbuilt in only a few."

Saints must learn to fly
"Where we'll finish is where we'll be. We believe we've got the talent and everyone's aware of our younger guys coming through. But potential's a nasty sort of word in footy," said Grant Thomas "It's going to take a hell of a lot of hard work and they're prepared to give that. They know what it takes. They've had 20 or 30 games into them now, and another season under their belts, and you come over here on a Sunday and play against quality opposition - a hard, tough, physical side. It's a perfect balance for us to have and it's a great step forward for the young guys."
