AFL's small town stars
"We know that we can't go out and set a bad example," says Xavier, "going out and getting drunk every night. Playing AFL, you always get told that you can't be doing that and be a role model at the same time. With kids looking up to you, it's a big responsibility. You have to conduct yourself in a certain way no matter what your job is." Both cite Brownlow medallist and senior player Robert Harvey as an inspiration. "The way we were brought up, was that you never let yourself get a big head over anything," says Xavier. "You see some boys who actually do, and I think their ego gets a bit out of control. But when you look at someone like Robert Harvey who's won two Brownlow medals - he's probably the quietest and most humble bloke you'll ever meet at the club."

Guerra catches Thomas' eye
Young talent Nick Riewoldt was prominent on the wing for the duration of the hour-long match after lining up on Brendon Goddard, and dazzled the enthusiastic crowd of about 2000 at Moorabbin Oval. Saints coach Grant Thomas was pleased by the intensity of the match, and said Guerra's performance was promising. &He knows where the goals are, he knows how to finish. We didn't have one of our key defenders on him, so we need to keep it in perspective.&

HD's Intraclub Report
Aussie Jones: Close to best on if not best on. Won a heap of the ball and used it well. Very creative.
Lenny Hayes: Did his job. Didn't dominate but had a solid hit out. A touch of class.
Max Hudghton. Very good. Was having a good battle with Sam Fisher until Fish got injured. Set up several attacking moves off half back as well.

Young gun takes reins
Midfielder Lenny Hayes joined the ranks of players the calibre of Baldock, Loewe and Harvey yesterday when he was appointed St Kilda's 2004 captain . . . St Kilda coach Grant Thomas said Hayes "epitomised what we are about going forward - his consistency of performance, his integrity and his character. Irrespective of what was happening last year, Lenny Hayes was at the forefront the whole time, leading his troops into the battle," Thomas said. It was not only Hayes's on-field performances that won him the captaincy. St Kilda, long thought of as a 'social club', is keen to re-shape its image

Hayes wins the job
Lenny Hayes: "I think I'll get a lot out of it. I'd probably, just off the cuff, say that I'd probably benefit out of it the most, having it this year. It will probably further develop me, and some of the qualities that Aaron has showed last year I'll get out of it this year. I just want to lead by example. Aaron did a great job last year. And I've got such good support from the leadership group and all the boys and I just want to go about the way I do things the way I have over the last couple of years and just lead by example," he said.

Cripps well-equipped for new role
Having dealt with the blows that football can dish out, Jason Cripps feels well qualified to take on the role of player development coordinator at St Kilda. Cripps' injury-plagued career with the Saints ended in 2002, and last year he was appointed to coordinate AFL Tasmania's game development program and St Kilda's activities in the state. But he's welcomed his recent invitation to return to Moorabbin.

Daniher delighted with Saints
Daniher, who was one of Essendon's greatest ever players, shifted to St Kilda at the start of 2004, after four years with the Bombers and one year with Collingwood as an assistant coach. However, his only season with Collingwood in 2003 came to an abrupt end during the off-season, which surprised many of the football fraternity. "It meant that being out of business and out of work that you had to ring around the clubs and I'm just very thankful to the St Kilda Football Club that they gave me an opportunity to continue on in the AFL scene, which is great," Daniher told afl.com.au . . . Daniher said that ruckman Barry Brooks and forward/midfielder Daniel Wulf were unlikely to play in St Kilda's intra-club practice match at Moorabbin on Friday at 6pm, while most of the squad 'are pretty much right'.

Saints look globally
Rod Butterss said without complete humour this week that the club would not have been able to send Waldron in a cab to Collins Street two years ago . . . (Brian) Waldron has spent his week mingling with presidents and chief executives from the major sporting leagues in the US (Chicago) listening to them discuss how they do things. "Being financially and operationally more mature, it's now very important for the club to look outside the traditional boundaries," (Rod) Butterss said. "It's now logical, for us and therefore for Brian, to look at what the rest of the world is up to."

Saint has no fears about heading home
St Kilda ruckman Barry Brooks is ahead of schedule and should be right to tackle his demons when he returns to Hobart next week . . . "I'm a couple of weeks ahead of schedule. The target is still Round 1, but I am back doing all the training flat-out at the moment," Brooks said. "It is fine. I can jump off it and everything like that. I reckon I could do the competitive work but they want to hold me back a bit" . . . "I have been in the gym more than anyone and been working with Fraser Gehrig a fair bit," he said. "I reckon I have got stronger but I'm still around the same weight."

Herald Sun Saints Update
The Saints had their largest attendance on the track this week, with all but four players taking part in light work in the lead-up to next week's intense training camp in Hobart. The four were Justin Koschitzke, Daniel Wulf, Matthew Ferguson and rookie Dylan Pfitzner. Koschitzke is on a modified program with some cross-training; Wulf will start training again next week, starting with some running; Ferguson is nursing a hamstring; and Pfitzner is recovering from back problems.
