Hamill sheds kilos with captaincy
Aaron Hamill has foreshadowed he will enter the 2004 season with a slightly leaner frame and some bulkier teammates to help with his bullocking role. "I haven't probably pounded the k's out on the track as much as previous years but my weight's dropped a little bit - by about a kilo-and-a-half. I felt I was a bit too heavy last year," Hamill told afl.com.au. "We've got some really good young fellas coming on this year. I mean Fish (Sam Fisher) is going to be another good one, so I won't necessarily have to play that key forward role, which I had to last year" . . . The Saints are heading to Hobart for their pre-season community camp between February 3-6, ahead of their opening Wizard Home Loans Cup match against Adelaide at AAMI Stadium on 22 February.

Koschitzke back concerns
St Kilda utility Justin Koschitzke has been placed on a modified program to guard against a recurrence of a lower back problem that kept him sidelined for most of the 2002 season. According to St Kilda captain Aaron Hamill, Koschitzke had been training brilliantly up until Christmas, but concerns have arisen since the squad returned to work after the holiday break.

Saints learn valuable Koschitzke lesson
St Kilda has been treading ever so carefully with valuable commodity Justin Koschitzke. Anxious to avoid the back trouble that hit the versatile Koschitzke two seasons ago, the Saints are monitoring his preparation with extreme caution. Coach Grant Thomas said that Koschitzke's program had been eased back this month in the interests of safety. "He has just been going very, very well for a fair time," Thomas said. "And we have just decided to take some pressure off him, pull it back a bit."

Saints stunned as Bradley goes
St Kilda received a major blow yesterday when the club lost new assistant coach Craig Bradley. The former Carlton star told the Saints he could not take up his job as a part-time assistant to coach Grant Thomas because of business commitments. It was unclear last night whether St Kilda would seek a replacement for Bradley. "We haven't decided what we're going to do as a result of what has happened," Thomas said. "Jason Cripps has also been appointed as player development co-ordinator, so from a numbers point of view, we're satisfied."

Peckett preparing for footy finale
Long-serving St Kilda utility Justin Peckett has conceded that the 2004 season will more than likely be his final AFL year . . . "I think with so many young blokes, it's just important that you help build a club and a future which I won't be a part of as a player, but I want to be able to look back as a supporter and be able to proud of the input that I had and hopefully I'll see a few grand finals as a spectator," he said.

Captaincy debate overblown: Hamill
In an endorsement for the idea of bringing in a new captain each year to improve the overall leadership of the team, Hamill said he would not deviate from being a strong role model for the club's younger players. "I certainly won't be changing what I do on the field next year, that's for sure," Hamill said.
