Focus on quality suits Riewoldt
Nick Riewoldt: "We've got a lot of young guys that are pushing the senior guys for a spot as well, so there's a really healthy rivalry for all of the players down at the club. And it's probably something that's been lacking in the past few years." Riewoldt said there has been more emphasis on refining the club's game plan this pre-season . . . "You can train all you want in the pool or on the track, but until you actually get that match-hardened fitness, you're going to struggle come game time" he said.

Saints in torrid workout
The Saints endured a rigorous day on the training track, completing simulated match practice for more than an hour in 30 degree heat at Moorabbin on Monday. Tagger Steven Baker was a casualty of what, at times, was a quite physical session. He limped from the field after receiving a knock to his knee. The club said the injury was not serious, but Baker will have a clearer diagnosis by Wednesday.

Factor in Max
Max Hudghton: "(We are aiming to be) a team that when you're going out to play St Kilda you know you're going to get a hard contest until the end of the game. We had a good building block last year, but we're not getting ahead of ourselves, we just know quietly what we expect as a team. We want to be a tough, hard, consistent, performing team who'never gives up and no matter what happens in a game, we're a chance to win. That's all we want to be branded as and just give an honest performance."

Gehrig sings TD's praises
Gehrig, who hit a purple patch of his own towards the end of last year, aims to be the jewel in Daniher's forward line, providing he and his fellow talls can stay injury-free. Gehrig led the way up forward during a four-week period late in 2003, when the young St Kilda side showed a ruthless streak, notching four successive ten-goal wins and he's looking forward to being more productive still in 2004.

Ball rolling on leadership
Luke Ball is not yet out of his teens but that didn't stop him nominating for the leadership group at St Kilda this year . . . "A lot of people might have seen it as a bit premature but I decided to nominate, it was good idea. I didn't get a gig in the end, but it was a good experience", he said.
