Gehrig happy to share the lead role
"Yes, I guess (I'm keen to be captain), but captaincy, the media probably sort of make it out to be bigger than it is at the St Kilda Football Club. It's the leadership group, the seven players in there and they're basically captains of the club," Gehrig said. "It would be an honour and all that sort of stuff, but at the end of the day you're tossing the coin, and it is the whole seven guys that have a fair influence on how the place is run."

Thomas says Gehrig captaincy material
Fraser Gehrig is the bolter in the race for the St Kilda captaincy. Gehrig, recently voted into the Saints' leadership group, is now among the top three candidates to replace Aaron Hamill. "I think he's in it up to his ears," St Kilda coach Grant Thomas said last night. "Two or three of them are up there and he's definitely one of them. He's a pretty big hit with the playing group . . . he has very strong leadership skills."

Oh what a feeling for sponsors
Toyota is poised to sign the year's largest sports sponsorship deal, replacing Carlton & United Breweries as the AFL's new naming-rights sponsor in a deal worth $7million a year. But the move has caused consternation among the AFL's television broadcast partners - the Nine and Ten networks and pay-TV channel Fox Footy - as it may prevent them securing rival car groups as lucrative telecast sponsors.

The Black sheep no longer
"I suppose I believe in fate. Fate has got me here now. I'm not looking back," Black said. "Once the trade fell through, I just wanted to get as fit as I could over the break, come back as one of the fitter blokes. I wanted to earn the group's respect back by working hard on the track, zipping the lip and letting my actions say the words for me." Then came phase two of the Black fightback - the brave decision to nominate for the leadership group.

Footy veterans keen to start
The Wizard Cup is only 40 days away and St Kilda's Robert Harvey cannot wait. Harvey, 32, is one of several veteran listed players who could understandably be feeling the pinch at this time of year. Instead the St Kilda stalwart is thriving on preseason training.

Milne set to bounce back
2003 was an indifferent year for the nippy St Kilda forward who had become something of a cult figure after an impressive 2002. That year - just his second in the league - Milne was his club's leading goalkicker, finishing sixth in the Coleman Medal, seventh in the Saints' best and fairest award and even represented Australia in the International Rules series in Ireland. But in 2003, Milne played just 14 games for a return of 26 majors.
