Saints Big Improvement Year
It's heartening to go into the year without having to exaggerate our chances as much as in the past few seasons. The overall gravity of our side allows for better performances when key players are out due to injuries or suspension. Some Saints supporters give Peckett, Thompson, Milne and Black little credence for still being in the squad but they are all experienced and proven players and offer individual qualities to the side whether they are permanent or temporary additions to 2004 playing list.

Ticket prices to soar
Ticket prices for AFL games are likely to rise due to steep increases in the cost of police services. And it is expected all other public events, concerts and festivals - including cricket at the MCG, the Grand Prix, and the Melbourne Cup - that require police for security will be affected. New user-pay fees will apply to all arms of the force in a bid to raise an extra $2 million for its budget. Hourly charges for the use of police will rise more than 15 per cent a year for the next three years.

Daniher a leadership convert
Daniher told Sport927 that he believes there's genuine merit in the system established under Grant Thomas whereby the entire playing list has a say in the composition of the club's leadership group. "It's a good way of doing things," Daniher said. "Players put their hand up and want to be a leader and they've got to present themselves to their teammates about why they want to be there. The players cast the final vote and that's a very democratic way of doing it, I suppose," he said.

Thomas in no doubt on manager
Grant Thomas believes that assistant coach Matt Rendell's appointment as the club's new football operations manager will have no significant bearing on Thomas' on-going responsibilities as the Saints senior coach . . . "We're still on the lookout for another assistant coach, albeit it's late I know. But we think if you can pick up people the quality of Terry Daniher, I think there's a lot of great people out there and you can't go wrong if you've got great people," Thomas said.

Saints appoint Daniher, Rendell
Terry Daniher has been appointed an assistant coach at St Kilda, and Matt Rendell has won the new position as the club's Football Operations Manager. Daniher, an assistant to Mick Malthouse at Collingwood last season, had been favoured to fill the vacancy left by Dean Wallis' return to Essendon. Early promotion the goal: Stone
New St Kilda defender and rookie-listed player Nick Stone is determined to capitalise on his third opportunity at AFL level - after stints with Collingwood and Hawthorn - by graduating to the Saints' senior list as quickly as he can. The 22-year-old, who was drafted by the Saints at No.22 in the National AFL Rookie Draft, indicated that he was looking to play AFL football in 2004. "I've played 17 games over the last two AFL seasons for Hawthorn. At the moment I'm on the rookie list at St Kilda, but I'd be looking to get promoted as soon as possible and get an opportunity in the senior team," the likeable Stone told afl.com.au.

Why Gehrig should be captain
Craig Callaghan believes reformed party boy Fraser Gehrig is the ideal choice to wear St Kilda's rotating captaincy badge next season. Coach Grant Thomas has indicated the Saints might wait until the eve of the season before appointing a successor to Aaron Hamill. Many have labelled 22-year-old midfielder Lenny Hayes as the ideal candidate but Callaghan plumped for Gehrig, who topped the Saints' goalkicking last year with 55.

Toyota leaps onto AFL bandwagon
Toyota is set to become the AFL's main sponsor, taking over from Carlton and United Breweries in a deal worth as much as $10 million a season, according to informed sources. It is believed that Toyota and CUB will share the sponsorship next season, with Toyota taking over in 2005. Toyota will have naming rights of the home and away games next season - with its logo on all AFL grounds - and CUB the finals. This year is the last in a four-year sponsorship arrangement between AFL and CUB - worth around $10 million next season.

Injury proves a learning curve
When former Fremantle Docker Craig Callaghan glances at St Kilda's Moorabbin headquarters he may as well be peering at his own reflection in the mirror. Like the under-achieving Saints, Callaghan enters the 2004 season staring destiny in the eye. And both know success is the only acceptable outcome. Callaghan, a 1995 and 1996 Rising Star nominee, has not played a senior match since August 2002 after buckling a knee during a VFL match for Springvale.
