Brothers reunited after close calls
As picks six and seven approached in Saturday's national draft, Raphael Clarke could hardly breathe. The St Mary's, Darwin, youngster knew that St Kilda wanted to take him to join older brother Xavier at Moorabbin. It was widely known who would be taken with the first five picks, but Essendon (pick six) and Geelong (pick seven) had shown interest in the younger Clarke without revealing intent.

Fisher a versatile Saint
St Kilda draftee Sam Fisher was on the verge of embarking on a professional golf career. Fisher, 21, played off a handicap of one as a teenager, but grew tired of the little white ball and switched to the larger leather variety. "I got down to one when I was playing seriously about two years ago . . . (now) I am out to two," the No. 55 national draft pick said before training at Moorabbin.

New boys for 'danger' lessons
The potential dangers of gambling, drink-driving and speeding will be reinforced at a two-day induction camp for the AFL's newest recruits next week . . . Lawrence, who unsuccessfully sought a new club through last month's draft after being delisted by St Kilda, was charged on two counts of exceeding 0.05, one charge of careless driving and another of driving an unregistered vehicle after an accident at Southland in July.

Union calls for changes
The AFL's new boss Andrew Demetriou has warned the 16 clubs that the AFL Players Association is on the warpath following the farcical Jade Rawlings scenario during last month's trade period. Demetriou, addressing his first meeting of the club chief executives, said the AFLPA was pushing for a rule change to prevent the 2003 trade outcome which saw Rawlings virtually forced to join the Western Bulldogs via that club's first pick in the pre-season draft.
