Saints learn to play a new roll at training
There were no pommel horses, rings or parallel bars in sight, but St Kilda players were yesterday tumbling and pirouetting like seasoned gymnasts, during a training program that coaching staff are hoping will "injury-proof" their senior list. The program is called "impact" and is designed to lessen the effect on a player's body of collisions with the ground or other players, reducing injuries and improving energy levels, speed and mobility.

Pay-TV gives footy fans a free kick
FOX Footy will be provided free next season to pay-TV subscribers. The decision by Foxtel will save customers up to $100 a year and expose Australian football to millions more viewers. Fox Footy chief Rick McKenna also revealed yesterday the football channel would become interactive and allow for TV screens to be filled with up to four different camera angles of a live match. "We have now put Fox Footy into the Essentials package, the basic Foxtel package, and what that means is that even the passing footy fan in any state in the country automatically has access to everything on offer," Mr McKenna said.

Bombers try to land at Moorabbin
There is a very Essendon look about the contest for the new head of the St Kilda football department, with the shortlist of candidates including two past and present Dons. Essendon assistant coach Robert Shaw will be interviewed for a second time early next week, as will Matthew Drain, who worked alongside Shaw and Kevin Sheedy at Windy Hill as football operations manager between 1997 and 2002. The choice between the two could come down to whether St Kilda decides to place a greater emphasis upon management or strategic assistance for coach Grant Thomas on match day . . . The Saints want to release Thomas from his role as soccer-style manager to enable him to concentrate on coaching the team.
