UK tour will define young Saints: Thomas
St Kilda coach Grant Thomas expects the club's training trip to London encourage a sense of 'worldliness' among his young players . . . Thomas said the idea of traveling to London was a 'progression' from the Saints' training programs which have occurred in the last three years . . . Defender Brett Voss will be the only player not attending the trip, due to the fact that his wife is expecting a baby.

AFL slashes funding for country football carnival
The Australian Country Football Council has questioned the AFL's commitment to community football after the AFL slashed a grant to a biennial carnival by 80 per cent. The AFL gave the council $25,000 towards the cost of staging its most recent carnival in South Australia's Riverland last year. Soon afterwards, it told the council of its intention to reduce the grant to $5000. ACFC president John Lussick, from Western Australia, has twice visited the AFL recently to make representations to game development manager Ross Smith but has failed to have the decision changed.

Luke Ball: A bright, shining Saint
After a year in the AFL, 2001's No. 2 draft pick had the potential and leadership skills to become a future champion, but none of the performances. He might have been an accomplished junior cricketer and athlete, and a brilliant student, but that doesn't mean much to the average bloke. Fast-forward another year and Ball has not only 16 AFL games under his belt, but a new-found reputation as a player ready to get his hands dirty winning the ball, as well as using it particularly well.

Breakthrough insurance deal
The AFL has pulled off a coup to protect the game from spiralling insurance costs. A package, which covers every community league and club throughout Australia, has been implemented in the face of what the league calls a "crisis". AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou said it had become increasingly difficult for clubs to meet insurance premiums and find cover.

Excitement builds for Dal Santo
Any one of Leigh Montagna, Matt Maguire, Luke Ball, Leigh Fisher, Brendon Goddard or Allan Murray could have won the award for St Kilda's most improved player in 2003. Nick Dal Santo admitted afterwards that when his name was called out, he was pleasantly surprised. "I was sitting next to Matty Maguire and I said to him 'this has got to be you mate'. I wasn't really paying attention and I heard 'Nick Dal Santo' and I quickly had to get the jacket on," he told afl.com.au.

2004 Fixtures
St Kilda is relatively happy with its 2004 draw, keeping its Easter Monday match against Richmond even though it means only a five-day break before the Saints' away game against Adelaide. Significantly, the Saints will have two more night games in 2004 than they did this year, giving the club a total of eight matches under lights.
