St Kilda's 2003 report card
Shining light: just when we thought it was time to start writing the Robert Harvey obits, back he comes in stellar form, leading the Saints in clearances and kicks.
COACH: Grant Thomas took his young Saints from five wins to 11, which was as much as could have been expected. There was the required development from his host of kids, the only concern being too many losses by huge margins. His "zero tolerance" comments when axing Matthew Capuano caused a stir, but St Kilda may benefit long-term from his strong stance.6/10

Their program will include 'home' and 'away' encounters with Essendon at Telstra, and home games against Hawthorn and Collingwood, the latter on a Saturday night in May.

Burke becomes a St Kilda assistant
In a surprise announcement at the club's best-and-fairest award on Wednesday night, Burke said he would join coach Grant Thomas and the club's coaching panel in 2004. In his 17 years as a senior AFL player, Burke played in one unsuccessful Grand Final team. But speaking to the 900-strong crowd at the function on Wednesday, he said he hoped he could now experience a premiership as a coach. "The dream is still alive. I wasn't able to get it from that (playing) side of the fence but rest assured, I will do everything I can to get our hands on that trophy," Burke said.

Back to square one
St Kilda have an exciting list that needs to make the big step next year. They require a good ruckman and possibly another tall defender to help Max Hudghton. With Heath Black on the move they may have some trade bait. Minimum expectation: Will need to at least make the finals to keep the critics at bay. No excuses for not making the eight. With their talent they have the capabilities of finishing 4th-6th.
