Saints' Black tipped for new club
At the end of 2001, Black moved to Moorabbin from Fremantle after five seasons as a Docker in a complicated deal that involved Barry Hall's shift to Sydney, Jeff Farmer's switch to Fremantle, Clint Bizzell's move to Melbourne and a complicated transfer of draft picks that also netted the Saints Nick Dal Santo. It is believed that Black talked with the club last week, although he remains contracted for next year. He has played 34 matches for the Saints for a career tally of 103.

Burke eyes coaching role with the Saints
Burke's comments about returning to St Kilda and buck the recent trend in which many former players have sought a new environment to start their coaching careers. But he said he would be prepared to leave Victoria if a good offer came up. "If it was under a coach that I had a lot of respect for and I felt I could learn a lot under, you would definitely move interstate," he said.

New ruckman not a priority: Rendell
The Saints, Rendell declared, are determined to make their first round selection count. "We don't want to trade it, but we can't say an emphatic no because you never know what clubs will throw up. We'd like to keep pick eight, and follow the policy we've had for the last couple of years of keeping our high picks." Rendell affirmed that Stephen Milne's name is definitely on the 'required' list for next season, but he was less certain about Heath Black's future at Moorabbin.

Hayes and Harves win All-Australian honor
St Kilda stars Lenny Hayes and Robert Harvey have had their outstanding seasons recognised with selection in the 2003 All-Australian team. Hayes has been named on the wing, while Harvey is one of four players on the interchange bench. It was the first time that Hayes has been awarded such an honour, while Harvey has now been selected on an amazing eight occasions.

Milne - are we too quick to say trade him?
Sure other teams started to work him out . . . but we were also not using him well. In the end we were playing him as a leading forward . . . so hence other teams put someone taller on him so he was outmarked. With FG at FF lets get back to having him as a roving forward pocket opportunist forward making the most of his ground skills. FG will rarely be outmarked . . . so lots of opportunities there . . . and Milney DOES know how to kick a snap goal. Also when Milne is one on one players should be told NOT to kick it to a marking contest . . . but 10 to 20 m away on whichever side Milney is so that he can use his ground skills. If Milne had been in the team during our hot streak then I think he would have kicked a few bagfulls . . .

Report card 2003: St Kilda
Best win: It's hard to go past the epic win over the Brisbane Lions in round 11, when the Saints won a thrilling clash at Telstra Dome by 5 points. St Kilda guns Riewoldt, Robert Harvey and Hayes all starred, while the fine performance of Brett Voss, on his more famous brother Michael, was a crucial stepping stone in his career. There was plenty to like about their win over the back-to-back premiers in a performance that made the football fraternity sit up and take note.

Talent Management Lessons (Archives)
St Kilda traded six times more in the same period as Essendon (1996 - 2001) but was only able to achieve 60% of the return per player of Essendon. This result was slightly more damning in that the trading period was an opportunity for a club to pick key position players. Clearly, St Kilda's understanding of its existing bench strength and consequently, its key position requirements cost the club materially on the field.

Beating the bastards every week
Its great being a Saints supporter in the off-season, we can hoodwink ourselves into believing anything, so just before the 'Silly Season' hits its peak I've stepped back, taken a deep breath, and jotted down my impression of our 'outfit' following the home and away season and analysed where I think we are at as a competitive club in the AFL. - The Peanut pretending to be a serious young insect certainly weighs heavy, I assure you!!

Clarke wants brother-brother rule
Raphael is a Saints fan, but is widely tipped to be gone by the time St Kilda's eighth pick comes around in the national draft later this year. "It would be a lot easier to find your feet and get used to it if you were with your brother," Clarke said. "There's a lot of expectation to live up to, with people saying, `He's going to be better than Xavier'."
