Pick 26 for Adam Schneider and Sean Dempster
... St Kilda may not have got the ruckman it desired but added run to its side by trading pick 26 to Sydney for premiership players Adam Schneider and Sean Dempster. With the pick returning the Swans to the second-round of the draft, they then struck a deal for Geelong forward Henry Playfair for a third-round selection, pick 44.

Saints excited to snap up former Osborne star
St Kilda coach Ross Lyon has hinted Sydney Swans signing Adam Schneider will spend more time in the midfield after being snapped up by the Saints in yesterday's AFL trade. After securing Schneider and Swans premiership teammate Sean Dempster in exchange for selection No.26, Lyon said the former Osborne junior would be rotated through the centre with Luke Ball, Lenny Hayes, Nick Dal Santo and Robert Harvey. Lyon had a high opinion of Schneider during his time as Paul Roos' assistant-coach and believes the dashing left-footer has the opportunity to build on his impressive career at Moorabbin. "We see (Adam Schneider and Sean Dempster) to have the potential to be 150-plus game players for St Kilda," Lyon said. "We have secured four quality players, with three of them under the age of 25, and their best football in front of them." Schneider, 23, played 98 matches and kicked 99 goals in the harbour city as well as starring in the 2005 premiership team after being picked in the 2001 draft with selection No.60.

King plays down rift rumour
St Kilda recruit Steven King has moved to play down talk of a rift with Geelong. King said on Friday that a trade to St Kilda was "the least (Geelong) could do for me", but he said yesterday that his words had been misconstrued. "There wasn't any arrogance, not at all," he said. "I am rapt with what Geelong Football Club has given me over 13 years. "I also think I have been a great servant to the club as well through some pretty tough times and I just thought it was the right thing to do for both parties. "Now we can move forward and get on with it."

Cats give up King and Gardiner to St Kilda for pick 90
Geelong offloaded four players, including premiership ruckman Steven King, as the AFL trading period ended today. A total of 20 players changed clubs, with the deals involving 14 of them finalised today. King, who played in the Cats' Grand Final win over Port Adelaide last month, went to St Kilda along with fringe forward Charlie Gardiner in exchange for draft pick 90 from the Saints. King's departure solves the Cats' problem of trying to fit three ruckmen into their senior side and also helps ease any salary cap issues the club had after winning the premiership ... It also strengthens the Saints' ruck stocks, after the retirement of Matthew Clarke and the uncertainty over the fitness of Michael Gardiner, who is yet to play a game for the club after joining them from West Coast in last year's trade period

Adam Schneider and Sean Dempster both Saints
The Swans last night completed their trade week dealing by securing Geelong forward Henry Playfair and finalising the deal that will send premiership forward Adam Schneider and half-back Sean Dempster from Sydney to St Kilda ... Despite initial reluctance, the popular Schneider yesterday agreed to be traded to St Kilda with Dempster for the Saints' second draft pick (No.26). Dempster was more eager to join former Swans assistant coach Ross Lyon at Moorabbin, believing he will get more game time. "It's a difficult decision and Schneids wanted to think it over, but he's handled it well and the important thing is that, as premiership players, both of them feel like they can come back to the club at some stage," Roos said. Many observers believe this year's draft is more shallow than in recent years, with most of the best talent contained in the top 25.

AFL clubs List lodgements
Teams were required to nominate a maximum of 35 players, including rookie promotions. Second-year rookies, scholarship players and international rookie retentions had to be nominated separately. Clubs' second list lodgement is on November 16, two days after NAB AFL National Draft nominations close. Third list lodgement is on November 30.
King for a day - but now a Saint
Geelong has discarded four players - including grand final ruckman Steven King - from its premiership squad but the Cats are still under salary cap pressure. King and Charlie Gardiner (to St Kilda), Henry Playfair (Sydney) and Tim Callan (Western Bulldogs) were traded away from Kardinia Park for four draft picks - some the Cats will never use - in the AFL exchange period ... ST KILDA, which this year fell out of the final eight, appears to have emerged the winner of trade week by opting for short-term answers to its needs. Beyond signing King and Gardiner from Geelong, the Saints also raided Sydney for 2005 premiership pair Adam Schneider and Sean Dempster. St Kilda gave up just two draft picks - No. 26 to Sydney and No. 90 to Geelong - for the quartet. St Kilda coach Ross Lyon said King "still has two-three years of good football ahead of him" and Dempster and Schneider should play more than 150 games for the Saints. "We have secured four quality players with three of them aged under 25 and with their best football in front of them," Lyon said

Playfair, King on the move
Henry Playfair to Sydney and Steven King being linked to St Kilda. That's the state of play at Geelong coming into today's trade deadline, with King looking increasingly likely to be playing elsewhere or be forced into retirement. King, 28, met St Kilda coach Ross Lyon at Moorabbin yesterday. Earlier in the week the Saints had offered Geelong youngster Mark Blake, who King replaced for the Grand Final, a massive three-year offer. But when Blake knocked that back on Tuesday in favour of a new deal with the Cats, they turned their focus to King. The writing was on the wall for King at Skilled Stadium when Blake and the Cats fourth ruckman Trent West, who impressed in the VFL this season, both signed new two-year contracts. The salary cap at Skilled Stadium has tightened after the Cats were forced to increase their offer to Blake, who played 22 games as back-up to Brad Ottens this season, after the St Kilda approach. King said last week he wanted to stay a Cat ... Richmond has also expressed some interest in King, who played six games this season, but only as an outside possibility in the pre-season draft.

Schneider trade a tough call
Paul Roos has admitted trading Swans premiership player Adam Schneider to St Kilda last night was one of the most difficult decisions in his coaching career. But in the end Roos believes it was the right move for both the club and the exciting 23-year-old goalsneak Sydney fans dubbed Schneiderman. Roos also says the deal that saw Schneider, along with premiership defender Sean Dempster, 23, go to St Kilda for their second-round draft pick (No. 26 overall) signalled the start of a restructure at the club. The Schneider trade will reunite him with former Swans assistant coach Ross Lyon, who took over the Saints' senior coaching job this year. "It's a difficult week for everyone; I don't like doing it but it is part of your job as coach and you have to take the emotion out of it," Roos said. "You love all your players and it is very difficult, but I think at the end of the day it might be good for Schneids. That's what I spoke to him about on Wednesday. Probably with us he stagnated a little bit and that was the reason why, in the end, I was prepared to do the deal. We think him going to St Kilda might stimulate his career, so I though it was better for him to go. Rossy has been hounding me for a while to get Schneids."

Levi Greenwood - Michael Wilson 'clone'
The similarities are more than striking. In fact, if you ask Port Magpies football manager Bob Clayton, Levi Greenwood has virtually been genetically modified to match gutsy Power backman Michael Wilson. "Levi is exactly the same as Michael Wilson," Clayton said. "Whatever you say about Michael Wilson, that's Levi Greenwood. That's how I see it." At Alberton when Wilson progressed through the SANFL club in the mid 1990s, Clayton was stunned when he first saw Greenwood hit the training track. Not only is Greenwood (181cm, 91kg) built like Wilson (182cm 89kg), he is also a long-kicking left-footer. "He plays just like Michael Wilson and he's got the same sort of attitude as Michael Wilson when he was a kid," Clayton said. "Michael came through our junior system when he first started and Levi is exactly the same - he always wants to be at the front on any of the running exercises. They tackle hard, they run hard and they're the ideal footballer really."

Todd Grima to train with Power
The AFL career of ex-Geelong rookie Todd Grima isn't over yet with the youngster set to train with Port Adelaide over the pre-season. Grima, 20, flew to Adelaide yesterday after receiving a call from Power coach Mark Williams. The 192cm forward said he would nominate for the preseason draft and hoped his time with Power would open up another door. Grima was delisted by the Cats last month despite an impressive year with Geelong's VFL side. He was the leading goalkicker with 51 goals for the season and part of the Cats' VFL premiership side. Grima, from Tasmania, said he was looking forward to moving to Adelaide. His brother Nathan plays for SANFL club Central District and will also train with Port Adelaide over the pre-season.

Slow journey sinks Willits
He promised plenty and delivered little. And yesterday Port Adelaide decided it had waited long enough for key forward Ryan Willits to make good on his early promise. Port delisted him just eight days before the AFL national draft. Selected at pick 19 at the 2004 national draft, 20-year-old giant Willits was dumped after playing only three games and kicking just one goal in three seasons at Alberton. He did not play a senior match this year after controversially switching SANFL clubs from Glenelg to West Adelaide.

Guy Richards looking for a club
Fashion might be fickle, but Guy Richards is hoping that when it comes to draft day, ruckmen are still in vogue. After the frenzy that was AFL trade week, where big men were courted, swapped and demanded, the former Collingwood ruckman is hoping the trend will continue later this month when the 16 clubs meet for the national draft. After seven years with the Magpies, the 24-year-old was delisted last Wednesday as Collingwood set about finalising its list. Richards had played in the final six games of the year, including the Magpies' three finals covering for an injured Josh Fraser, but was effectively on the outer once Collingwood gave the Brisbane Lions its first-round draft pick for 204-centimetre tall ruckman Cam Wood. The rush for tall men gives Richards hope that he will find a new home come November 24.

Challenges in tapping the draft
... The national draft of 2001 that is revered for delivering Luke Hodge, Luke Ball and Judd has, in fact, not lived up to its impeccable reputation. Ashley Sampi (pick 6), Richard Cole (11) and Barry Brooks (15) were among yesterday's departed, as were others of the class of 2001 before them in Luke Molan (9), Ashley Watson (14) and Shane Harvey (18). Moreover, Sam Power (10) was traded last month as Jason Gram (19) was in 2003. The 2003 draft is another that has since seen a good number of its elite selections disappear. Kepler Bradley (6), David Trotter (9), Ryley Dunn (10) and Fergus Watts (14) were all formally dispensed with yesterday, as Billy Morrison (17) and Llane Spaanderman (18) were earlier.

Following in giant footsteps
When NAB AFL National Draft hopefuls Cyril Rioli Jr, Marlon Motlop and Charlie McAdam settle down to await their fate on November 24, they will do so knowing that indigenous players have a better chance to make it in the AFL than ever before. Maurice Rioli, Daniel Motlop and Gilbert McAdam helped pave a way for their nephews, cousins and sons to reach the AFL and now a road once less travelled is jammed with talent and greater opportunities to play at the highest level. Last year a record 15 indigenous players were drafted, including Essendon duo Leroy Jetta and Alwyn Davey, Richmond's Shane Edwards and Port Adelaide speedster Nathan Krakouer. Port Adelaide has recruited more indigenous players (13) in the past 11 years than any other club and four, Gavin Wanganeen, Byron Pickett, Peter Burgoyne and Shaun Burgoyne, have achieved the ultimate in winning a premiership.

Wood in draft mix
Former Camperdown footballer Easton Wood is attracting AFL attention despite bypassing the traditional development system. Wood, who attends Geelong Grammar on a cricket scholarship, chose not to play TAC Cup football last season with the Geelong Falcons. He represented Geelong Grammar in the Associated Public Schools competition and still attracted attention from AFL club scouts with his ability and athleticism. Geelong Falcons regional manager Michael Turner yesterday confirmed there had been "some interest" in Wood from AFL clubs. But Turner stressed the national draft was tight this year. "If Easton gets rookie drafted, good luck to him," he said. "If it doesn't work out and he wants to play TAC Cup (as a 19-year-old) or get into the VFL system I'd be prepared to help him." TAC Cup teams can use two "restricted" 19-year-olds on their playing rosters. Turner said Falcons coach Garry Hocking, who is football director at Geelong Grammar, invited Wood to pre-season training this year but he decided not to accept.

Levi Greenwood hopes for AFL draft
Whyalla's Levi Greenwood returns from the 2007 AFL National Draft with every hope of being drafted to an AFL club for 2008. The camp is an intensive testing session on the nations best young talent, with scouts and coaches from every AFL club in attendance to observe the tests and results of a wide range of exercises testing components of the players' fitness. Greenwood put his own name out there with two top 10 finishes, a seventh placing in the repeat 30metre sprints and a fifth placing in the vertical leap, recording a solid 71cm jump. After a stellar debut year in the Port Adelaide Magpies senior side, Greenwood picked up the best first year player award and most courageous award at the club's best and fairest annual dinner.

Brad's hard road to top
Brad Ebert remembers the abuse. At times it was so bad he dreaded running anywhere near the boundary line. "There are some vicious parents out there," the SA under-18 football captain said. "I copped a bit over the years and as a young kid it was pretty tough to deal with. Now, if anything I suppose, it's just made me tougher." So tough that Ebert - who carries one of SA's most recognisable surnames - is the state's top-rated prospect at next month's AFL national draft. Widely tipped to be a top-10 selection, the son of former Port Magpie Craig Ebert and nephew of legendary four-times Magarey Medallist Russell Ebert has an outstanding pedigree but his journey from under-age football to the AFL has been anything but easy. Put bluntly, his has been no silver spoon ride. He has had to learn the hard way. "I copped a lot of flak when I was younger," Ebert, a cousin to Power sharpshooter Brett Ebert, said. "It wasn't so much from other players as it was from the parents - they were the worst. I used to hear things all the time, mostly from adults yelling that I wasn't any good and was only getting a game because of my name. It was stuff I didn't need to be hearing, particularly when I was so young."

Race on to sign Cape crusaders
Rex Liddy is a crack indigenous footballer from Hopevale on Cape York, and he aims to emulate his cousin Matt Bowen and become famous as a football star. But unlike his celebrated cousin, who plays for the North Queensland Cowboys in the National Rugby League, the 14-year-old's game of choice is Australian football, and this week at Bamaga on Cape York, the cream of the region's youthful footballing talent was displayed during the Chris Johnson Cup. The carnival is a battle for the allegiances of sporting youth on the cape. In both rugby league and Australian football, the search is on for lithe athletes who can be trained to an elite level, and the outdoors life that young people on the cape live is conducive to producing the sort of athletes needed in professional football. Mark Browning, a former Sydney Swans captain who played 251 games and was present at the carnival, said the region would produce top-level players. "We've already got one kid, Rex Liddy, who is looking like a strong chance to get drafted," Mr Browning said.

And while many other parents of aspiring AFL players would be concerned about putting their trust in Australia's most controversial football club to nurture and develop their son, Davis's parents say they are comfortable with his move to the west. In the wake of the Ben Cousins drug disgrace and substance-related death of former senior player Chris Mainwaring, questions have been asked about the Eagles' culture and club environment. But Ryan's father Barry Davis said: "We don't feel like that at all - we don't have any fears for our son. For the club to actually take the step of sacking one of the greatest footballers of the modern era really does show that they are very serious about what they are doing."

First Ruck - Michael Gardiner or Steven King?
Let's assume both Gardiner and King are 100% fit for round one next season. Who starts the year as our number one ruckman? I'd have to go with King simply for the fact that Gardiner has only played 15 games in the last 4 seasons - none in 2007, 3 in 2006, 9 in 2005 and 3 in 2004. Worse still, those 9 games in 2005 were played as a permanent key forward. Gardiner has only played 6 AFL games in the ruck in the last 4 years and hasn't been a legitimate AFL ruckman since 2003! I just can't see how Gardiner can come back and be competitive at AFL level without any exposed form. Even if he's 100% fit and gets a full pre-season under his belt, he's still going to need considerable time in the VFL just to learn how to play again in match conditions. However if Gardiner does recover from his foot injury, get a full pre-season and eventually regain his form he'll be in a real asset. Back in 2003, the last time he played a prolonged period as an AFL ruckman, he averaged 26 hitouts, 6 marks and 13 disposals. Wouldn't we all love a ruckman that can produce numbers like that? A ruck division of Gardiner and King at full strength lets us unleash Kosi at full forward to become the match winner we know he can be. -
'Statsman'
... People forget that in 2006, Gardiner played 15 games in the WAFL with Claremont. If you add on a few games with the Eagles, he was able to play basically every match for the year. So his body can still physically stand football. -

AFL clubs eye Devils
Two Tasmanians have been given permission to train with AFL clubs in the lead-up to the November 24 national draft. Having recovered from knee surgery that ended his VFL season, Moles is fully fit and burning up the track. The talented small forward-cum-midfielder has been working hard in the past few weeks and posted the quickest time in the 20m sprint on Tuesday night at the Devils' TIS testing session. The 22-year-old received the Kangaroos invitation last Friday, but is not getting ahead of himself with the draft just around the corner ... While playing down his own chances, the move only confirmed what Devils coach Daryn Cresswell has been saying all year -- that Moles is a solid chance to get picked up in the draft. Sydney and Hawthorn are also rumoured to have shown interest in Moles, though he said he hadn't spoken to either club.
