Ross Lyon on the 2007 Draft: "We feel as though the club is in really good shape list wise for the next three to four years. You don't have to make yourself a kindergarten. You can develop and aim to be successful at the same time. It's not mutually exclusive." Adam Schneider (Sydney) and Sean Dempster (Sydney) to St Kilda for pick No.26. From Dederang/Mt Beauty FC and an AIS/AFL Academy graduate. Ben has been on AFL recruiters radar for a while and has had good form this year. He was one of Country's best performers during the champs playing in the ruck and up forward. He looks to have good endurance and moves around the ground well but he is not blessed with a lot of pace. His ruckwork is pretty good, he can read the play and he can take a good contested mark. He is the type of ruckman that can ruck for a good portion of the match.
Comments: Ross Lyon said it wasn't about for needs, it was about the best player, and they (St Kilda recruiters John Peake and John Beveridge) felt that at pick 9 he was the best player. John Peake said Ben is a well co-ordinated good endurance runner who can develop as a St Kilda ruckman in time. Matt Burgan said that the Saints were desperate to get a long-term ruckman. Pick No 42 Jack Steven Geelong Falcons 180cm, 76.4kg, DOB: 28/03/90 (med midf/fwd)
Jack Steven from Lorne played 15 games for the Falcons in 2007, averaging 20 possessions a game and kicking 17 goals. Jack is a competitive medium midfielder/forward who is able to win his own ball in a contested situation and won the Geelong Falcons Best and Fairest award and displayed consistent footy in the TAC Cup. Jack has just completed year 11.
Comments: Ross Lyon said that Jack's quick (three seconds for 20 metres and 14.5 beep test) and is one year out of Lorne, is bottom age and won the best and fairest at the Geelong Falcons. A real competitor. John Peake said that Jack is tough, and hardened-up with good endurance, not bad speed, who likens a bit to Paul Chapman. Matt Burgan said that the Saints had to take him at pick 42 because Collingwood (pick 47) were eager. Pick No 57. Fraser Gehrig - St Kilda Football Club 195 cm, 106 kg, DOB: 03/03/76. (big fwd)
Two time Coleman medalist with 540 career goals. He hides behind the goal posts, throws chairs around the boundary line and gives opposition supporters lip when not kicking goals. Fraser was originally drafted by West Coast Eagles in 1993 NAB AFL Draft 1st Round selection, No.16 overall
Comments: Ross Lyon We know Fraser and we got him back. He was keen to continue in his career and he had his rethink. He kicked 60-odd goals last year and that is very hard to replace John Peake said that Fraser is one of only two players to score more than 70 goals in each of the past three years. Matt Burgan speculated that we grabbed him at 57 just in case another club was lurking. Pick No 70. Eljay Connors - Bendigo Pioneers 181cm, 65kg, DOB: 01/01/90 - (small midf)
Echuca youngster Eljay Connors is believed to have been hampered by an injury in 2007. Bottom age player with good speed and evasive ability. Suffered a punctured lung playing for Bendigo Pioneers only to return late in the season. The pacey wingman is believed to be good in traffic, makes good decisions and is a killful left-footer.
Comments: Ross Lyon said Eljay is a quick, skilful midfielder who is the brother of Daniel who plays at Richmond. Had some significant injury concerns that had him off the radar a bit, but we are confident he will overcome them. John Peake said Eljay is a really quick, dashing wingman. He's very skinny at this stage. We thought there was something there that could be a bit exciting. Matt Burgan sees Eljay Connors as a late chance speculative pick. Pick No 8. Glenn Chivers (Oakleigh Chargers/St Kevins) DOB:09Apr89, 189cm, 85kg Glenn who has been training with St Kilda for two weeks has played a limited number of TAC footy games. He is extremely athletic and powerful player achieving a 14.3 Shuttle run (beep test) at the NAB AFL state screening session and his disposal and decision making is good. Glenn was playing school footy at St Kevins when an AFL scout quizzed Rohan Welsh and Steve Conole (Regional Manager) about why he wasn't down at the Chargers. He hasn't played a lot of high level TAC cup footy but was a champion rower so he understands the commitment required of an elite athlete. Glenn aspires to be a midfielder but currently sees himself as a rebounding backman. Pick No 24. Luke Miles (Swan Districts/Guildford Grammer) DOB:30Oct86, 191cm, 78kg Luke was recruited to Swan Districts from Guildford Grammer. He took out the Swan Districts Best and Fairest after playing 19 matches in 2007, averaging 14 disposals per match and booting nine goals. He is a midfielder but often played back pocket or full back. Luke has great speed and agility and clocked 2.73sec for 20m at WA State Screening Session in 2007, along with 7.83sec for the agility test - the quickest times measured at all NAB AFL Draft testing this year. Pick No 39. Andrew McQualter (St Kilda) 09Jun86, 179, 79 Andrew has 23 games under his belt at Senior level with St Kilda. He was previously listed as a midfielder but Ross Lyon may have another role for him in the overall squad balance and it is likely that he will be further developed as a tagger. Pick No 51. Khan Haretuku (University of NSW/Eastern Suburbs) DOB 19Oct89, 198cm, 96kg) Khan has been elevated from AFL Scholarship status to Rookie. Khan is from the University of NSW/Eastern Suburbs Club in Sydney and signed with the St Kilda Football Club in May 2006 under the AFL (NSW/ACT) Scholarship Program. Khan was born in Sydney and has New Zealand parents (Tau and Jenny) and has just recently completed his HSC. He is a convert from Rugby League and has only played Aussie Rules for the last four years. |
