R 9 2003 Post Game

Round 9 - St Kilda vs Collingwood
Sat 24th May 5:10pm AEST, Telstra Dome
COLLINGWOOD 8.4 10.8 15.12 22.17 (149)
ST KILDA 0.6 7.7 10. 8 12.12 ( 84)
Goals: F Gehrig 5 N Riewoldt 3 S Milne S Lawrence J Peckett M Maguire.
Best: N Riewoldt F Gehrig B Voss J Peckett L Penny M Maguire.
The Game: Collingwood looked sharp early but St Kilda was the exact opposite. Coming off a six-day break and a trip to Subiaco Oval last Sunday, the Saints looked flat and the Magpies took full advantage of this, running rings around them. St Kilda went forward on a few occasions, but were wasteful when they did. The Saints weren't a threat in the last term, as Collingwood slammed on another seven goals to two.

Mick Malthouse: "And, we have a pretty young side ourselves. It is worth noting that on the field today we were 17 years collectively younger than St Kilda."
Grant Thomas: "I think we dropped our bundle after kicking six behinds. To our credit, we had a terrific second quarter but we couldn't sustain it." Saints captain Aaron Hamill failed to have a kick last night and Thomas said he had hurt a foot in the game.

Eddie McGuire: "It is as simple as this, the trademark of the Collingwood football club always has been and is the black and white stripes," he said. "We are not going to be Don King and promote it for them. There is not even an argument. The AFL have already said it is not an issue."

marto: I think GT has really turned the attitudes of the players around (at training etc) he has been a terrific Coach so far (but the side is getting better, so should the results), given his situation, but, he is a woeful matchday coach unfotunately . . . I'm still on the fence until R15 (played everyone), then I will have a better idea of his overall performance.

cwrcyn on Springvale match: Knobel looked pretty good and should be promoted . . . Dal Santo was a bit quiet, but showed that his evasive skills in tight situations are something special . . . Brooks was disappointing . . . Callaghan was very good . . . Moyle was quite busy, as was Montagna . . . Blake was disappointing . . . Oliver played full-back and was beaten.
» Springvale Match Reports !! - Saintsational Forum
Jakes: I would want to see a recognised ruckman (maybe both) next week in Brooks and/or Knobel as they would surely be better options than Capuano . . . if only one is selected then Thommo should consider promoting Ferguson as he is part of the future of our club and would be useful in defence to assist Penny and Maguire ... Also Moyle and Montagna have performed for Springvale and it is time for them to return ... Out should be Capuano, Schwarze, Voss and either Baker or Lawrence.

The Fireman:A lot of our blokes were like fish out of water, either in the wrong possies or out of sorts. Hamill was just not with it. Look we can go through the whole list but it wont help, we need a definate game plan with players set for a position and let them learn that position.

saint#1: GT lost us the game at the selection table on Thursday night. It was not the wrong decision to replace Max with Schwarze but to bring in Voss for Kosi?? A ruckman for a medium sized utility?? And to have Capuano as your only ruckman when he wasn't even rucked the previous week coz he was so PATHETIC! You definately need 2 ruckman to start a game, and I would rather see Brooks and Knobel given a game before that hapless excuse for a footballer.

Roger: We are all guilty of over rating our list, after watching tonights effort about 10 of our team wouldnt get a game with the filth, the majority of our team are too old and too slow or just plain battlers, some vigorous recruiting / delisting is reguired at seasons end to make us competitive.

Jaxon X:I rang the club the other day and they told me that they are selling very well. Which one of you fools is buying them? I am not opposed to alternate strips . . . but why yellow? Put us in all red with a touch of white and black. We have never won wearing mellow yellow and never will!

Statsman: I simply can't understand why you would select Capuano as the only recognised ruckman in the side and then only give him 36 minutes ground time while Maguire and Riewoldt do the bulk of the ruckwork. If Capuano is not capable enough or not good enough to play any more than 36 minutes he simply shouldn't be in the side.

Andrew Thompson on hangover: "Absolutely (it's psychological)," Thompson said. "The Eagles and Freo come over here and make the trip back and win so why shouldn't teams go over there and come back and win."
» Hudghton's out - reshuffle - TheAge - 24May03
St Kilda has promoted Troy Schwarze and Brett Voss to cover the loss of injured duo Max Hudghton and Justin Koschitzke for Saturday night's big game against Collingwood at Telstra Dome. Both Schwarze and Voss have been displaying solid form with Springvale in the VFL and have been rewarded for their efforts.

Max Hudghton: "I'm probably more disappointed for the team than myself," Hudghton said yesterday. "I don't want to sound like I think I'm the most important thing or anything for the team, but it probably gives us a little balance when I'm in the side; it allows Fraser (Gehrig) to go forward. I can play on a tall or a small, so (being out) probably just unbalances the side a little bit."

Malthouse: Asked if St Kilda, who the Pies play tonight at Telstra Dome, had the best young talent he'd seen, Malthouse said: "They are on a par with Fremantle. It's no coincidence both have been near, or on the bottom, and have had many picks over many years."

Fraser Gehrig: "It's completely gone now. If I'd had an operation, that's what they'd do to fix it - cut it right through. It's still pretty sore, but from here on it should settle down as your foot adjusts."

Last Match: St Kilda started the match in a positive fashion, attacking the forward 50 with regularity, yet it was unable to convert on the scoreboard, posting 1.6 for the term, with Stephen Milne the Saints' only goalscorer. Consequently, the Saints led by just five points at quarter-time, despite having seven scoring shots to two.

Statsman: . . . Woewodin has been playing a similar role for the Magpies, sitting out on a wing as the link man when they clear the ball out of defense.. Like Headlead he's got good pace and uses the ball well.. Without Maxie in defense, we could have real trouble containing Tarrant and to a lesser extent Rocca if we allow Woewodin to win easy touches and stream forward into attack . . .
