Current form pleasing, admits Hamill
St Kilda captain Aaron Hamill admits that the club's recent form has been 'pleasing', but said the club is still disappointed not to be playing off in the finals, despite the fact that the Saints have won five of their past six matches. Hamill said that the Saints had been 'making progress throughout the year', which was 'coming together in the last month', but said the club's ultimate goal this year was to play off in September.

We needed to earn respect: Koschitzke
Justin Koschitzke: "We're not going to play in finals, so we just focused really heavily on team performances, on being hard at the footy and the young guys have really rallied around that. Obviously in the last four weeks we've had good wins and it's coming out". "If we have another win next week, with 12 wins we'd think we've gone a long way towards earning respect," the ruckman said.

Clarke was suffering soreness yesterday, but the Saints expect he will be available to play against Geelong on Saturday. "The scans are really precautionary, he should be fine," Saints communications manager Georgie Fidge said.

Should it go or stay?
He plays great footy, but is even better known for his controversial hairdo. A hairdo so noteworthy that 'The Herald Sun' recently felt compelled to devote a double-page colour spread entirely to it . . . This Saturday (August 30th) Fraser Gehrig will appear live on 'After the Game' to face the music. The verdict will be revealed, and the mullet will either stay or go. If the public votes for the mullet to go, Dave Hughes will turn the clippers on and start shaving.

Trim the turkey, don't hack it to bits with a chainsaw: Dan Warna
SaintsRrising: From the Forum to date we seem willing to scarifice too many players . . . for the sake of a ruckaman. To win a flag we need a TEAM!! I think it is great how our players seem to be bonding together . . . all the signs are there. We need to continue to foster this. We need them to support each other . . . and through TEAM success we will outplay all other teams as we will go the extra yards, do the extra tackles etc. If we encourage a climate of fear where anyone is up for trade . . . then players we start playing for SELF and not for the TEAM!!

Must win game for two all time greats
Roo's 50th game - will become our greatest ever player Hamill's last game as captain - stamped himself as one of our greatest ever leaders after only one season as captain. Another time another place (he) would have held the job for 5 years and been our premership captain, the aggresive leadership he has set is quickly being picked up by our younger group, they are following in his footsteps, our attack at the man and ball by Kossi, Roo, Ball, Voss, Maguire, Baker, DalSanto and a few of our more senior players is the highlight of our game - even saw goddard 'have a go' at the weekend. Not to many Fancy Nancy's left these days, which is a credit to our coaching panel and hamill's influence.

Two Abletts enough for retiring ump
Bryan Sheehan felt it was a privilege to umpire Gary Ablett during an AFL match. But he admitted to feeling a little unsettled about umpiring Ablett's son and joked there was no way he wanted to be around for the grandson. The AFL's most experienced field umpire announced yesterday he would retire at the end of the season. He will officiate in Sunday's Richmond-Hawthorn game and will then be available for the finals. Sheehan said the senior Ablett, one of the game's all-time greats, ``stood out'' in his 18 years as an AFL umpire.

(Repeated Link) Saints to punt on lottery win
St Kilda is unlikely to trade its first draft pick for a proven ruckman. The Saints have an elite group of youngsters and need a ruckman and perhaps another key defender to round off their list. But coach Grant Thomas yesterday indicated they would concentrate on filling their needs from within.

Norm Ware dies aged 92
Norm Ware - the only man in VFL/AFL history to win the Brownlow Medal while captain-coach - died today, adding another name to the list of former greats who have passed on during the 2003 season. The former Bulldogs ruckman, captain and coach had been the oldest surviving Brownlow recipient before dying peacefully in hospital this morning aged 92. In an era when ruckmen were barely six feet tall, the 6'4" (191cm) Ware had the advantage over them in height, but also possessed great agility for a man of his size. He was appointed captain in 1940 and coach the following year, getting the club into just its second-ever finals series in 1942. Remarkably he returned from war service for the final home and away game of 1945, kicking six of his team's eight goals as they strived vainly to make the four. Ware retired after his 200th game in the loss to Melbourne in the 1946 first semi-final.
