Darcy blow to Dogs
Western Bulldogs ruckman Luke Darcy is unlikely to take his place against St Kilda at York Park today. Bulldogs coach Peter Rohde said Darcy did not travel to Launceston with the team yesterday. The coach was tight-lipped over the nature of Darcy's injury, saying only he was "a bit sore" after last week's loss to Fremantle

Spoon enters mix for the Bulldogs
Regardless of the outcome of today's AFL clash between St Kilda and the Western Bulldogs at York Park in Launceston, the season has disappointed both clubs.Saints captain Aaron Hamill says the club regards its failure to make this year's finals as a "major disappointment" while the Bulldogs are still desperately trying to avoid the wooden spoon. Carlton is doing its best to try to help the Bulldogs, enduring one crushing loss after another - but time is running out for the Dogs, who look like they will remain anchored at the bottom of the ladder. St Kilda produced a surprise late burst after the mid-season break which gave supporters some hope that, in a tight run to the finals, the club would squeeze into the top eight. With inspiring youngsters such as Nick Riewoldt and Justin Koschitzke set to take up the role of the recently retired veteran champion Nathan Burke, the future augers well.

Playing for pride
St Kilda coach Grant Thomas said a win over AFL cellar-dwellers the Western Bulldogs on Sunday is essential to underline the respect his side has earned with some impressive performances in the latter part of the AFL season. While a mid-season form slump has most likely cost the Saints a place in the 2003 AFL finals series, Thomas said an honest performance against the hungry Bulldogs at York Park is crucial to the team being touted as the big improver in 2004.

Callaghan fights back
St Kilda has added three players to its squad for Sunday's match against the Western Bulldogs at York Park in Launceston, with the team to be finalised on Friday evening. Heath Black, Craig Callaghan and Stephen Milne are all in line for promotion from the VFL, with Callaghan a chance to play his first senior match for the season, after undergoing a knee reconstruction last year.

Mullet, but no wet fish
"The thing people don't understand about Fraser, the thing they don't see, is the durability he has shown us, the ability to play with pain and injury," St Kilda chief executive Brian Waldron said. "He's one of the best and yet people think he's the opposite, a bloke who dogs it." Waldron was never more impressed by this often unseen aspect of Gehrig's game than in May this year, at half-time of the match against Fremantle at Subiaco Oval in which Gehrig was playing with a serious injury to a tendon in the arch of his foot.

Roys link almost sent Gehrig north
In 1993, Gehrig's uncle, former Fitzroy player Ross Thornton (pictured below), was reserves coach to senior man Robert Shaw at Fitzroy. Thornton was keenly aware of his nephew's progress with the Murray Bushrangers and hopeful of him becoming a Lion, a hope he says was shared by the club's recruiting staff. On draft day, the club was to hold picks six, seven and nine. According to Thornton, though, Shaw was adamant that it wasn't tall players the team needed but mid-fielders, and lest he be accused of nepotism, Thornton did not argue the point.

Brooks aiming for Round 1 - 2004
Brooks made an impressive debut for St Kilda, playing 5 of the first 6 games of the season. Tragedy struck for Brooks in round 11 when he tore his anterior cruciate ligament, requiring a full knee reconstruction. Ironically he was playing for St Kilda's VFL team Springvale, against Tasmania in Tasmania. "Its pretty blurry" said Brooks. "I just remember going for the mark. I landed funny and my leg was caught on the other fella. All my weight went onto my left leg, and I couldn't handle it. But I took the mark though". His family were not at the game that day, but were watching at home when Brooks went down. "It was televised live, so they were watching it on tv when it happened. But we didn't know how bad it was until the next day, when the surgeon said the worst," he said.
