2003 ROUND 20 - Page 2
Dr Dans Match Review
Hamill 9/10: best game for some time, was everywhere, like a captain! rallying the troops in defence, commanding the centre, and driving forward in attack, a real general. Harvey: 10/10: the only player to play all 4 quarters. I noticed while others stopped chasing, and throwing themselves around, and started peeling off, harvey chased, tackled, marked, spoiled etc, in every sence of the game he was the maestro, could have kicked a few more goals, but for his dishing off. If that running goal went in from 50, he'd have had 11/10 . . . - Dan Warna

'That' 3rd quarter
Roger: It's not how much you win by but how you win, instead of being elated and wrapped in that win I was disappointed more than anything . . . no bastard has ever taken pity on us all these years and when payback time comes we have gotta rub their noses in the dirt . . . footy's not a game its warfare and for us to be succesfull we have to be feared and hated . . . I'll never be happy until we are the most hated team going around.

Young guns fire up for Saints
After he and his gang of tyros made Carlton look second-rate, Dal Santo confirmed no one on the best young list in the land wanted to be anywhere else. "There's a general understanding that we don't want to leave," he said. "Everyone is having a great time at the club - it's exciting, and everyone wants to be involved. I'm out of contract at the end of the year, and there are a few of the guys in a similar position. But I'm confident we can work something out, and I don't think there will be any troubles." . . . "Grant Thomas has put in a place a fantastic environment, and the players are all on board. Everyone knows where we are heading, and everyone knows it will come - it's just a matter of time."

Harvey has shot at medal No.3
A 33-disposal best afield performance against Carlton yesterday should ensure the champion St Kilda midfield yet another three votes towards the game's highest individual honour. While Harvey was typically humble about his award chances, saying he was all about team rather than individual success, others believe he is in as good form as when he won back-to-back Brownlows in 1997-98.

Fresher faces are all smiles
This was a day on which the Saints not only notched their first win in their yellow away strip, but one in which they recorded just a second win at Princes Park in four decades, kicked their highest score against Carlton, secured their highest winning margin over the Blues and posted their fifth-highest score of all-time.

Saints hell bent on rewriting history
Looking every inch a finals team, these Saints have set out to create their own dates of historical importance . . . If one was looking for that special quality that Thomas may have instilled into this side, it was selflessness. St Kilda players now relish the idea of sharing the ball and putting their teammates in the better position. So many times, novices such as Goddard pass the ball when they could have perhaps covered themselves in glory by shooting at goal. With the match lost at halftime, Carlton coach Denis Pagan ordered his Blues to make the next half a hotly contested scrap but, while the Blues were able to restrict St Kilda's scoring to eight goals, the dominance didn't change.

Stay true Blue, says battling Pagan
Denis Pagan last night made a plea to Carlton supporters to remain upbeat and loyal, despite yet another nightmarish year that could yet see the Blues slide to last.
Thomas: An example of the mercurial Saints' hot-and-cold form came in the second half yesterday when they kicked just eight goals to four after an opening 18-goal hour. "We knew if we threw everything at them early we could get on top," he said. "But at times later our play was a little bit laconic." Reminded that the Saints had kicked their highest score of the season, their highest score against Carlton and, by far, their biggest margin in history, Thomas said no one at the club played for records.

Saints give no quarter in humiliating Carlton
Put this under the category of small mercies. When the siren rang out just before 5pm yesterday, the ball had gone out of bounds in front of the Robert Heatley Stand. Thus, the Carlton players were afforded the luxury of a short walk to the dressing rooms after one of their ultimate humiliations.

Saints not ready for finals: Thomas
St Kilda has won four of its last five matches and is arguably the best performing side out of the eight, but after the side's 91-point defeat of Carlton - the Saints' third big win in three weeks - coach Grant Thomas says his side is not ready to play finals.

Saints have Blues for dessert
The Saints were decked out in custard yellow, but it was the Blues who were reduced to a tepid, milky mess at Optus Oval on Saturday. Spurred-on by the faint chance that they can sneak into the finals, the young Saints were in awesome form, securing only the club's second victory at Carlton in 40 years - and what a victory.
