Farewell Burkey: a loyal, courageous Saints champion
They bounce the ball and Burke is like a chihuahua on speed, breaking packs, bowling people over, forcing the ball forward. His legs are spinning beneath him like Barney Rubble on the Flintstones so that, when he inevitably gets decked himself, he just bounces up and keeps going, those 'wheels' spinning all the time. Few put their head over the ball so fearlessly, selflessly, as Nathan Burke - knocked out so many times that the medicos ordered him to wear a helmet and who in his dotage as a player, threw the helmet on the scrapheap anyway. His infamously crooked nose tells the story. If you don't think footy's as tough as it once was, go and have a look at Burke's nose.

Burke fights to end
Retiring St Kilda veteran Nathan Burke won't get any parting gifts from former teammate Danny Frawley at Telstra Dome tonight. Frawley, who will coach Richmond against the Saints, said the emotion of Burke's farewell would be the last thing on his mind before the game. "I'm the coach of the Richmond Football Club and people have got their perspectives all wrong as far as I'm concerned," said Frawley, who played the final years of his career alongside Burke at Moorabbin.

Heritage Round 19
Overall, AFL crowds this season are more than four per cent up on last year (180,000 people) despite the re-development work at the MCG and additional games at smaller venues in Launceston and Canberra. "This reflects the strength and history of our game. AFL clubs are among the oldest sporting clubs in the world and the intention for the week's events is to acknowledge what fans believe is special in football with the heritage of their teams."

Saints Heritage week guernsey
"The St Kilda jumper to be worn was that originally used from 1886 to 1903. It has importance in St Kilda's history as the club had slipped down to junior ranks for a number of years up until 1885 and the guernsey was used when the Saints re-emerged in the VFA."

Richmond Heritage week guernsey
Richmond will wear its original VFL strip in Saturday night's Round 19 match against St Kilda, as part of the AFL's Heritage Round. The yellow and black vertical stripes with black socks was what the Tigers wore when they entered the VFL in 1908. They had previously worn that uniform in the VFA.

Saints pay tribute to 'Burkey'

Burke the standard-bearer
Speaking at the Hall of Fame dinner last Friday night, Jeans said that the popular concept of a single, debased and irredeemable St Kilda culture was a nonsense, and that there had always been much about the club to take pride in, cherish and move men to tears. In announcing his retirement yesterday, after 17 seasons and what will be a record 323 games, Burke personified Jeans' sentiment.

Burke's focus turns to coaching
Thomas indicated the club would seek to employ Burke in a coaching role next season. "He's a deep thinker about the game and he knows what's required to be successful. I think he's got a great ability to impart that on other people. From that point of view I think we'd be pretty high up in the queue to be sitting down and having a chat with him about what's going to happen next year."

Burke calls it a day
Burke was named as a member of St Kilda's team of the century and captained the club for four seasons. He placed equal third in the 1996 Brownlow Medal count. In a sentimental twist, Burke will play his final match, number 323, versus the club he débuted against, Richmond. Burke played with Tigers coach Danny Frawley and assistant coach Stewart Loewe, both former St Kilda captains and greats.Saints president Rod Butterss said Burke's legacy would be a vital element to the future success of the club. "I think that the great contribution that Nathan Burke has made to this football club is something that we have not yet seen - and that is the legacy that a guy like Nathan leaves at this club," he said. "If we are to build something special, it will need to be built on very firm foundations and the foundations that Nathan Burke has made, along with his mates, Robert Harvey and 'Stewie' Loewe - and I'm not pre-empting anything here Robert, at all - I think is so significant because it does enable these young guys who are sitting next to Nathan right now, to actually go on and complete the job."

Force no longer with me: Burke
"For the first 16 years that I was playing, there has always been a stage before the game, normally between leaving the car and walking into the rooms, where I get a buzz of adrenaline that makes you walk a bit faster, your pace quicker and your heart start to race just in anticipation of the contest ahead," he explained "Unfortunately, that's been lacking this year. It's been my clearest signal that probably my time is up."

Dr Dans Match and Player Review
The first quarter told two tales, one was Robert Harvey, and the other was inaccuracy. The saints dominated from the Full back to CHF, but could kick a goal. Robert Harvey purred around the packs, breaking tackles and driving forward with relentless ease, I don't know who was playing on him, but our forwards couldn't capitalise on his good work . . .

Are the Saints ready to roar?
St Kilda coach Grant Thomas says 'we'll have to wait and see' on whether the Saints really are a better side than Richmond, when the two sides meet at Telstra Dome on Saturday night. The reason for his statement is due to the fact that Thomas said after the round four loss to the Tigers that 'We believe we're better than Richmond. We believe we're a better side than them and we could knock them off'.

Harvey sets sights on 2004
Harvey, who will turn 32 later this month, said he was ready to line up for his 17th senior season next year, but was pragmatic about his playing days beyond that time. "I'll definitely play next year and I won't look any further than that,' Harvey told afl.com.au exclusively. I'll just see how my body holds up next year. When you get to the age that I'm at now, you can't really afford looking farther forward than that."

Coach seeks club unity on welfare
In the wake of the Steven Lawrence controversy, St Kilda coach Grant Thomas has called on all AFL clubs to take a more collaborative approach to off-field player welfare. On the night Lawrence crashed his car it is believed he had been drinking with his teammate and best friend, Fraser Gehrig. Thomas said yesterday he had had talks with Gehrig about his responsibilities but that neither he nor the player group had reprimanded him.

Sore Hamill likely to play

Club urges rehab for Lawrence
The Saints have unofficially released Lawrence and decided not to play him again this season at any level following a drink-driving incident two weeks ago that left the one-time rising star nominee hospitalised with damaged vertebrae. Club president Rod Butterss, chief executive Brian Waldron and coach Grant Thomas met the player and his manager, Ron Joseph, last week to discuss his future but it is understood the Saints have no intention of retaining Lawrence on their list.

Saints caught out with Lockett
Tony Lockett's snubbing of St Kilda's Hall of Fame function last Friday night to go fishing was a major embarrassment to the Saints. Teammate Nathan Burke accepted Lockett's award and said the big fellow didn't like those types of formal function.

Club Song
The Club sincerely apologises for the version of the club song which was played at Telstra Dome yesterday. Last year a version was trialled to get some feedback from supporters and due to the feedback the Club received it was decided not to be used again. Unfortunately due to an operator error by Telstra Dome yesterday the incorrect club song was played and was out of the Club's control.
