Saints farewell Burke in style
In his final AFL game, Burke played a beauty, notching up 14 disposals and chipping in with a goal. But his contribution early in the game was vital. In his post-match celebrations, Burke handed on his famous no.3 guernsey to outstanding young Saint Xavier Clarke, who accepted the honour by calling Burke 'a champion'. And while the story of the night was clearly Burke who declared on the ground after the game that 'it was a dream come true', the immensely talented Saints kept their slim finals chances alive with their ninth win of the season. The win was also a timely percentage booster.

Burke's unforgettable finale
The Saints' games record holder said he 'couldn't have scripted it any better', even though he was sporting a nasty gash on his face after clashing heads with Richmond's Andrew Kellaway. But it couldn't have been more appropriate for a man simply known for his courage.

Burke annoints the X-Man
"That was totally my decision. Grant left that totally up to me. I just think Xavier is a young man of great character. He comes from a good family," Burke said in his post-match media conference. "We've got some number one and number two draft picks that are worthy of that honour and they're going to be great players for us as well. But I think a guy like Xavier has the ability to influence a lot of other players around this football club."

Spud salutes a Saints icon
Danny Frawley: "I know the way Nathan goes about it, he only plays for one reason and that's to be a part of a premiership so unfortunately he's joined a very unlucky club for guys that have played that amount of football and not played in a premiership. I know there's a void there with him. I know only too well with that one, but in saying that, all you can do is get the best out of yourself and he's been able to do that."

Saints farewell Burke in heavenly manner
ST KILDA honoured Nathan Burke and again showed its rich potential with an 80-point AFL demolition of Richmond tonight at Telstra Dome. A second-term clash between young Saints star Nick Riewoldt and Tigers forward Tim Fleming is certain to come under video scrutiny. But Riewoldt's absence through concussion only briefly slowed St Kilda, who smashed Richmond with seven goals to one in the third term to win 20.10 (130) to 7.8 (50). The video screens at the venue did not show replays of the Riewoldt clash, where Fleming ran across him as the Saint handballed in the midfield.

Burke sent off in style
It ran like a potted highlights reel of his career and all that has made it great - all on a night when St Kilda continued to show its credentials for years to come with a crushing 80-point destruction of Richmond. Burke, who inherited the No. 3 jumper from Jimmy Krakouer, last night handed it on to a similar talent, Xavier Clarke, then finished the night with a lap of honour.

Thomas taunt turns to triumph
So Grant Thomas was right. His young St Kilda is a better team than Richmond - and by a considerable margin on the evidence of last night's demolition at Telstra Dome. Inspired by the 323rd and final appearance of Nathan Burke, the Saints kept alive their slim finals hopes with an 80-point win that was embarrassing for the Tigers. When they met earlier in the season, the Tigers won but took offence at the post-match remarks of Thomas, who declared he felt his team was better than Richmond. His exciting young stars looked after their coach last night.

Off-field standards crucial for the good of all
There is no doubt St Kilda coach Grant Thomas is on to something by suggesting that there be a league policy standard relating to footballers and their off-field behaviour. The plight of Steven Lawrence has revealed once again how difficult it is for young league footballers to learn their way through life. Their existence revolves around a professional football team and, occasionally, one of them will do something regrettable, just like any person in society might do from time to time.

Frawley pays tribute to mate
What a way to go: Amid the turmoil of his team's worst thumping of the year, Richmond coach Danny Frawley paid tribute to St Kilda's retired champion Nathan Burke, saying he was an icon of the game. "He's a beauty," Frawley said. "He's infectious, enthusiastic, doesn't drink or smoke and is a credit to himself and his family." While there was a melancholy silence in the Richmond rooms, Frawley, stunned by his team's 80-point loss, said Burke deserved all the plaudits from the big crowd and deserved to go out with a premiership.

Bloodied Burke finishes in typical fashion
Nathan Burke left football with a string of stitches stretching from his oft-broken nose to the area above his left eyebrow. For little has changed about Burke in the 17 seasons since he first stepped out for St Kilda, not least his propensity to stick his head where it is most likely to be violently collected.

Saints make finals bid, devouring lame Tigers
St Kilda's late bid to sneak into the finals is alive after it thrashed a disappointing Richmond by 80 points at Telstra Dome last night. Richardson was running hard, but not always to good effect, and when Riewoldt goaled at the 15-minute mark, the Tigers' acting captain looked to be on the verge of a thrashing. With Nick Dal Santo and Lenny Hayes giving good support and Burke seeing plenty of the ball in a spritely opening display, the Saints raced to a 27-point lead at quarter-time. When Clarke got the Saints' sixth goal immediately after the break, a blow-out looked to be on the cards.

Dr Dans Match report and player review
the highlight of the fourth quarter for me was when FG and Richo squared up. the .6Million dollar man for the saints vs the .8Million dollar man for the Tiggers. Richo squibbed, you could see the fear in his eyes on the TV and FG knew it, he gave Richo a mouthfull as he skulked off. again the saints dominated all around the ground except the half forward line, tivendale, cameron and zantuck did their best against a torrent nay a flood of quality ball from the midfield of the saints. Then snowey came out and finished the game with three marks, three goals and good night Irene.
