2003 ROUND 12 - Page 2

Round 12 - Saturday 14th June, 2003 - York Park

PORT ADELAIDE: 6.2 8.6 13.8 15.9 (99)
ST KILDA: 1.2 4.7 5.11 7.15 (57)

GOALS: Riewoldt 2, Gehrig, Hayes, Milne, Lawrence, Peckett
BEST: Harvey, Hayes, Powel, Jones

Grant Thomas: "We've won four of our five games from just really hard work, but we've still kept the opposition side in (the match) with poor kicking and it's been a trait all this year unfortunately and we just need to get better at it," he said. "I thought we made a lot of mistakes which gave them simple goals and that's no discredit to them, they won the game fair and square, but I just think we handed them the ball a lot with poor decision making."

Thomas, his coaching staff, the chief executive and football director will meet tomorrow (Tuesday 17th June) to review the Saints' 6-6 win-loss standing and plan for the second half of the season. He will then put the players through a solid training session on Wednesday before releasing them with individual programs until the group reassembles at Moorabbin next Monday.

Robert Harvey: "Yeah, we were in the game and getting enough of the ball, but we were just dumb the way we used it. We just weren't using it very smart. They were obviously dropping numbers back and we were kicking it long and straight to them, so that didn't help our cause."

Grant Thomas: "Xavier was OK after training last night (Friday night); he was a bit tight when he woke up; and then he did the warm up and he just felt extremely tight. And with that we just made a decision when he came off the ground in the first minute. I spoke to the medical staff, and they were of the opinion it could be quite dangerous if he played, and he would of probably done his hamstring, so we went without him."

"I don't necessarily know that it was height," Thomas said in regard to having Chris Oliver (195cm) and Matt Maguire (190cm) in the ruck. I think it was, as much as anything, experience on a few occasions. But having said that, I still maintain that we had enough of the footy and we had enough opportunities to score simple goals that we didn't . . . which probably deflated our guys and uplifted them a bit."

Brent Montgomery was using Brendon Goddard and his mates as a step ladder. He played a blinder in the second quarter, repelling almost every one of St Kilda's forays forward and finishing with 16 marks for the match.

Grant Thomas: "Our poor use of the footy and poor decision-making constantly allowed them to win possession. We had enough of the footy and we had enough scoring opportunities. It should have been a lot closer than what it was."
» Port marches over Saints - HeraldSun - 14Jun03

Port Adelaide was simply too good for St Kilda, who clearly missed the likes of Aaron Hamill, Andrew Thompson, Max Hudghton, Justin Koschitzke, Luke Ball and Luke Penny through injury, along with young but now senior ruckmen Trent Knobel and Barry Brooks. But the win also indicated how good Port Adelaide's depth is considering it was missing the likes of Matthew Primus, Josh Francou, Michael Wilson, Roger James, Stewart Dew and Matthew Bishop.

Josh Carr and Peter Burgoyne were prominent in the midfield, while Brett Montgomery turned back many of St Kilda's forward thrusts with an outstanding marking exhibition across half back. Defender Xavier Clarke became another injury casualty after experiencing hamstring tightness in the first minute, and his teammates were badly outpointed in the air in the absence of Aaron Hamill, Justin Koschitzke, Luke Penny, Trent Knobel, Barry Brooks and the delisted Matthew Capuano.

Trent Knobel: St Kilda ruckman Trent Knobel will undergo further tests on his neck tomorrow (Monday 16th June) as the club tries to determine the extent of the injury. Knobel will wear a neck brace for the next few weeks and his season is probably over, after he landed heavily last weekend during the upset win over Brisbane. But Knobel is seeing a specialist to clarify what he has done to his neck.

St Kilda's only premiership captain, Darrel Baldock, believes Grant Thomas has at his disposal the finest assembly of young players in the club's history, and yesterday said as he prepared to watch his beloved Saints play in his native Tasmania that they should, by rights, deliver the long-suffering club a flag within the next five years. "I suppose it reminds me of St Kilda when I first went there in '62. Carl Ditterich arrived the year after, Bobby Murray, Darryl Griffiths, Ian Stewart, Kevin Neale, all came within one or two years," Baldock said yesterday.

Rod Butterss said that the Saints considered playing 'home' games in Western Australia, South Australia, the Australian Capital Territory and Queensland, but said that once talks had been held with Tasmania, there was no other contest.   Butterss added that the club was committed to making a difference in Tasmania - not only on the football field, but off the ground also, with several programs for the underprivileged. "We are very much not about flying in, playing the game and flying out, St Kilda Football Club absolutely recognises our social responsibility, as well as our professional responsibilities."

Tasmanian premier Jim Bacon remains committed to having AFL football staged - and in particular St Kilda - continuing to play its games in the Apple Isle, while he is also hoping for more games to played at York Park during the season. Bacon, who spoke at the St Kilda president's brunch in the lead up to the Saints clash against Port Adelaide on Saturday, was adamant that AFL football should be played in Tasmania.

Dermott Brereton: "Thomas was on hand in the very early '90s when Denis Pagan coached his first senior game at North Melbourne. He was also nearby before Pagan's reign when Wayne Schimmelbusch held the position. He was later a front-row fixture in the coach's box next to Tim Watson and then Malcolm Blight during his limited tenure at the Saints. He captained and coached Warrnambool for several successful seasons in country football. He also experienced success in the amateurs with Old Xaverians."

rogerwa: Looking through the merchandise catalogue there are a million products, clothing, gifts, memorabilia etc that could become NEW business by using our 'clash' colours. By all means keep selling our brand Red, White and Black merchandise but duplicate everything by having these items also available in clash colours (with our Logo of course).

Paul Gough: "If the Power wants to play a game in Darwin then they should follow the example of clubs such as the Kangaroos, St.Kilda and Hawthorn and make it a home game. No-one can argue about Darwin's right to host an AFL match particularly with the impressive Marrara Stadium is now considered such a top-class sporting venue it will soon host its first Test cricket match between Australia and Bangladesh."

marto: Some people are saying that 6 changes is too many, why? The current side is the unsettled one, the 6 to come in would settle the side after a poor loss. It is playing with fire to change a winning formula, not a losing one.

saintsa: Roo should've gone into the ruck earlier and Gehrig should've gone forward earlier. Overall, our performance was good but again played 'dumb footy' and didn't adapt to the conditions of the ground. And considering our injuries we did well.

rogerwa: With the players we had out and up against the best team in the comp I was expecting anything from a 60 - 100 pt. loss. Our kicking for goal was once again pathetic, but overall with our 18 players to ports 22, could we expect much else?

statsman: The coaching staff know how good Dal Santo will be so they're just going "softly, softly" with him and making sure he's 100% right before promoting him to the seniors.. They probably figured he wasn't going to change the result of the match if he played today so better to give him the extra 2 weeks with the bye and then bring him in to play Melbourne in round 13..
