Round 11 - Saints vs Brisbane Lions

Grant Thomas: "Irrespective of the fact that we're coming up against a top team in Brisbane, that we've got enormous respect for, it's a game that if we're serious about fulfilling our goals and playing finals, we need to win it."
» Saints need to step it up, says coach - TheAge - 07Jun03
» St Kilda in quest for credibility - 7Sports - 06Jun03

The Lions have won their last eight clashes against the Saints, including the last six by an average of 10 goals, but there is no complacency in the camp. St Kilda are far better placed than they have been for several years with a 5-5 record and will be on a high after their gritty win over Hawthorn last week."

Robert Harvey: "The key last weekend was we got a bit out of everyone. That's been the line through all of our wins, if we get a contribution out of everyone we tend to do well against all sides.
» Harvey ready for challenge - heraldsun - 06Jun03

Burke on Capuano: "It really brought it home to me that the club was prepared to make very difficult decisions in order for us to have some success."
» Burke keeps tyros at bay - saints.com.au - 06Jun03

Grant Thomas: "It's a tremendous opportunity for us to test our brand of footy against the best in the business," Thomas said. "We are not intimidated by them and, if anything, we want to model ourselves on how they do things, which is the ultimate compliment, by the way."
» Copy-cat Saints go for upset - CourierMail - 06Jun03

Brett Voss: "He (Michael) is very intense and he was very determined; even from a young age everything he made or did he had to win at. I was probably the opposite . . . I play things a lot more for the enjoyment side of things, more so than having to win," he said. "To be the best of the best I think you have to be like Michael - very determined and intense . . . that's something that I probably haven't had and it's something that you can't fake."

Saints: Brett Moyle replaces Andrew Thompson in the only change to the St.Kilda side for Saturday night's Telstra Dome clash against the Brisbane Lions. Moyle has played the last three matches for Springvale in the VFL and had 27 touches for the Scorpions against Box Hill on Saturday.

Lions: Midfielder Shaun Hart has failed to overcome back-related hamstring tightness and will miss this game. Brennan returns for his third stint at the elite level. He was outstanding during the Wizard Cup pre-season series, demanded a senior berth in Round 4 on his excellent reserves form, and instantly won a National Rising Star nomination.
» Moyle in for Thompson - saints.com.au - 05Jun03
» Hart out for Saints clash - saints.com.au - 05Jun03

Simon Black: "There is a really good belief that if we do fall behind we can keep chipping away and things will eventually fall into place, but having said that it is better when you jump out of the blocks early - you don't have to worry so much."
» Saints simply a 'new challenge' - saints.com.au - 04Jun03

Grant Thomas: "I think (winning) one of the next two games is really critical for us if we are to play in finals," Thomas said. "It's six-six and it's against quality opposition and we go into the break with then the need to win probably six of the last 10, which is a tall order in itself, but if we don't, it is seven out of the last 10, which makes it even more difficult."
» Coach: Saints face two-week finals test - TheAge - 04Jun03

The next two weeks will give the Saints a reasonable measure of the progress made under Grant Thomas. The Lions at the Dome and then Port Adelaide at York Park will tell us heaps more about the Saints, and while a win against the rampant Lions seems unlikely, an entertaining contest should ensue. The Lions have lost none of their hunger and none of their drive and will look to put this one in the bag early.

GT on Lions (last year) "They are right in the middle of their best and they are going to be again for another year or so," Thomas said, adding that the Lions played tough, arrogant football - and rightly so. "We are going to be playing tough, arrogant football ourselves . . . they physically intimidate sides and it is a credit to them."

GT: Voss on Harvey: Grant Thomas' challenge to play Michael Voss on Robert Harvey. Matthews responded that everyone knows Voss plays in the centre every week, laying the challenge squarely back with Thomas.

Brisbane's top draft pick Jared Brennan stamped himself as an AFL star of the future while the one the got away, Nick Riewoldt, reminded fans in Queensland what they lost as the Lions defeated St Kilda last night by 32 points. Brisbane coach Leigh Matthews and Saints mentor Grant Thomas experimented in an entertaining practice match at the suburban ground of Coorparoo in which the Lions ran out winners 16.8 (104) to 11.6 (72).

Earlier this week

Andrew McLeod: The game has some tremendous players going around at the moment. There's Michael Voss, Nathan Buckley, Anthony Koutoufides and Ben Cousins - the list goes on. They are all great ambassadors of the game and play with a fierce competitiveness that spectators love to see. These players are the reason you go to watch the footy. One day these players will move on and the competition will be screaming out for others to fill their shoes. (The next generation List includes Nick Riewoldt, Xavier Clarke and Luke Ball).

GT on Allan Murray: "I was rapt to see how Allan played. It's a real credit to him. He's got a lot of skill. He wasn't getting a lot of opportunity at Port Adelaide and that's probably understandable with the sort of players they've got there."

GT on Robert Harvey: "I think he set himself to make sure that he made a statement and quality players do that. (He's) a humble man but he's got enormous pride and I think he wants to let everyone know that he's still got a fair bit to do in footy."
» Thomas lauds the young and the old - saints.com.au - 03Jun03

For much of VFL/AFL history, Aborigines were notable in the competition only for their scarcity. The brilliance of individuals such as Doug Nicholls, Polly Farmer, Syd Jackson, Barry Cable, Maurice Rioli, the Krakouer brothers and Michael McLean served only to underscore how few emerged. Though Aborigines were plentiful enough in the Perth and Adelaide leagues, in a Melbourne-centric competition, they were generally thought - it must be said - not to be worth the trouble.

Mackaysaint: This is not the toughest game of the season for St. Kilda, purely because we are playing in front of a friendly crowd on our home ground. Nevertheless, this is a real tough game and a great test for the Saints. I predict that it will be a close one, and accuracy in front of goal will probably determine the winner. The Saints are a real show against the powerful Lions - who show considerable depth after many injuries have forced a number of replacements (a rarity). The Saints might not get another chance like this for a while and will be hell bent on giving this a real shake.

Roger: We are putting the cart before the horse, as yet we have done jack chyt and until we do, forget all thoughts of keeping your top 10 players for another 10 yrs . . . there are always going to be clubs that will pay above market value who will sit back and leach off us, but when they do, we have got to screw the arze off em and get WHAT WE WANT, not what they want to give us.

dan warna: I say SCREW collo for the best deal we can get, because he knows that we will be a money spinner and frankly HE needs us more that we need him. If he was a cooperative person sure, aim for win win situation, but because of who he is, what he has done to us, and what he represents . . .

lifelongsaint: We can do this because we have multi-talented people in the administration area of the club. But we are doing it to save money. Rather than focus on the reason's why the club is doing this, they focus on the 'conflict of interest' angle. It sells more papers, I suppose.

Verdun66: Whilst Murray doesn't seem to have attracted any votes from the papers(?), it was an impressive start for us. I know he's played a game for Port, but what are some of the great (or good) debuts for the Saints?
