Round 10 St Kilda vs Hawthorn
Sat 1st June 2003 (MCG) - FOX Footy WA 12:00pm - Live
ST KILDA: 3.4 9.5 12.9 17.16 (118)
HAWTHORN: 3.2 8.4 12.5 14.6 (90)

Robert Walls - The Age: After the game, 3AW's switchboard lit up with talkback callers. Saint supporters were red hot on telling Mick Malthouse and Dean Laidley to shut up and look after their own backyard. And they were right. Laidley's preparedness to comment on Capuano's sacking and put a knock on the Saints as a club was his biggest mistake in his short coaching career. I suggest his head will be well and truly pulled in for the remainder of the season. I reckon Mick would have learnt a lesson, too.

St Kilda has put the final nail in Hawthorn's slim finals hopes for 2003 and possibly Peter Schwab's coaching career with a 28 point win at the MCG on Sunday.

It was an impressive first game for St Kilda from Murray, who replaced sacked ruckman Matthew Capuano on the Saints' senior list last week, and who kicked his fourth goal on the final siren after a pass from best-afield Robert Harvey.

St Kilda dominated the last quarter but kicked four straight behinds before the Hawks crept to within eight points with four minutes left. But captain Aaron Hamill's third goal sealed the game, which was played in greasy conditions and under lights from quarter-time.

Grant Thomas on Harvey: "He was awesome, he was just awesome," Thomas said of Harvey in his post-match media conference. "I don't think I've seen Harvs play a better game of football - both inside and outside -and we all know he's an icon of the game."

St.Kilda's 28-point win over Hawthorn at the MCG on Sunday was marked by one of the great Robert Harvey performances. His 40-possession effort was a throwback to the late 1990s, when he was the pre-eminent midfielder in the AFL.

St Kilda coach Grant Thomas last night threw down the challenge to Brisbane Lions coach Leigh Matthews, saying he would love to see Robert Harvey and Michael Voss go head to head when the Saints and Lions meet next Saturday night.

Rod Butterss on Media: As the fall-out of Capuano's axing continued, Butterss said the Saints sought to offer him the "dignity he deserves" by letting him retire. Butterss told the pre-game lunch that coach Grant Thomas was forced into making a "difficult, tough, demanding" decision to sack Capuano when that option was declined.

We SHOULD have won by 50 points, not 28, we'll have to play 20% better to beat the gummies next week. No stupid turnovers, better goal kicking and tighter defence. they are not a bunch of benny hills in front of goal, they are lethal, but we have a full list bar 2. - At this stage if we get within 5 goals its a mark of a good team.

Belly: If there's one thing I like more than St Kilda winning, it's St Kilda winning with Rob Harvey on fire. He must have polled a few votes in 3 or 4 games this year surely? Matthew Capuano: "Obviously, it was a bit of a shock. I guess you don't expect to get the sack nine weeks into the season," he said. "My form hadn't been very good pretty much since the start of the season, and I obviously played a very ordinary game on the weekend. I knew that."

Dermott Brereton: It irks me that some sections of the media perceive St Kilda as an easy target. And, in particular, its coach Grant Thomas, who some believe came into the job by unorthodox means. Whatever the truth, it is obvious to me that the Saints are now doing something very right with Thomas at the helm. His sacking of Matthew Capuano this week is a tragedy for the young man, but quite possibly the right thing for the football club. Would anyone have fired a shot at Sheedy had he sacked a player to get Damien Peverill back on to the senior list in his first year after a long-term injured player returned to demote Peverill back to the rookie list mid-season? I think not.

Match Review: St Kilda young-gun Lenny Hayes has taken his game to another level in 2003, despite finishing second in the Saints' best-and-fairest award last year. Hayes is seen as a future leader at the club and is likely to be anointed skipper next year in the club's captain rotation policy. Hawthorn tall Jade Rawlings has been one of his side's most consistent players in an otherwise difficult season for the club. Either up forward or in the backline, Rawlings has been a strong contributor for the Hawks and is third in the competition for the most number of marks, having taken 66 grabs.

Mackaysaint: Hawthorn defender Jade Rawlings will have the task of minding young-gun Saint Nick Riewoldt, while Jonathan Hay is likely to get the job on Fraser Gehrig. Joel Smith or Simon Cox will match up on St Kilda skipper Aaron Hamill (if passed fit). Luke Penny is set to have the task on Hawks' forward Nathan Thompson, and impressive youngster Matthew Maguire will probably line up on Nick Holland. Robert Harvey is likely to run-with Hawthorn skipper Shane Crawford and Angelo Lekkas is likely to tag Lenny Hayes. The ruck will be interesting with St Kilda opting to go into this game with only one ruck. Trent Knobel plays his first senior game this year, pitted against the imposing Peter Everett. Probably no one anywhere knows Everett's game better, but this is still a big ask for the 202 cm ex-Lion.

Karnaby: When tagging last year Bakes was sometimes able to run off his opponent and sneak the odd goal, nowadays he seems to be playing too far back to manage to do that. It's not as if our midfield has bathed themselves in glory over the last couple of weeks, going about things differently must surely deserve some consideration.

Two page spread on the goings on in the coaches box last Saturday night. An interesting read about a poor night at the office. Interesting to see that Grant Thomas seems to make all the decisions autonomously. Which is not surprising I guess when it is his neck on the line every week.

Players have been sacked mid-season previously. Plenty of times. The only difference here was that Capuano, encouraged by his manager Ron Joseph, decided to be honest about the nature of his departure.
» Honest sacking, hypocritical bagging - Saintsational Forum

Stickman: Very interesting the different angles these two (Malthouse and Hird) have taken on the Capuano sacking. For most of his article in this morning's HS, Hird seemed to tacitly support it, mentioning the occasional need to draw lines in the sand and to not tolerate mediocrity. He also seemed to lace the article with unspoken but implied support for what Thomas is trying to achieve.

Firthy on Capuano: . . . it was the way to go and it's good to see our administration is carrying on with the shape up or ship out ideals, think back to when we pussyfooted around and were virtually run by the players . Thank heavens those days are gone, you get paid good money if you are not earning it, on your bike. Promote Murray and use Cappas match payments for him. Way to go for mine.
