Saints open to Scorps chasing Cousins
... St Kilda football manager Matthew Drain said the Saints would be open to Casey Scorpions chasing Cousins. "We haven't discussed it with our VFL affiliate at the moment. I wouldn't say it would be totally out of the question ... but it would be a matter of how Ben's rehabilitating himself, which I would have thought would be the No. 1 priority," Drain said.

Hutchison heads up Scorpions
Just over a month after Peter Banfield's controversial departure, the Casey Scorpions have announced former Melbourne utility Greg Hutchison as their new senior head coach. The appointment was confirmed on Tuesday after a procession of coaches had been interviewed. Former St Kilda star and two-time Narre Warren premiership coach Austinn Jones was notified on Monday that he had not been offered the job. Jones is now a prime candidate for the vacant Gippsland Power TAC Cup coaching post. Hutchison, 50, played 96 games and kicked 21 goals for the Demons from 1975-84, and also had a 13-game stint as caretaker coach of the club in 1997 after Neil Balme was sacked. He has been involved in a variety of roles as an assistant coach at Australian Football League (AFL) level with Richmond and the Kangaroos since 1999. Hutchison also coached Prahran in the Victorian Football Association (VFA) between 1986 and 1989 and was keen to return to the head coaching ranks.

Hutchinson to coach Casey Scorpions
St Kilda Football Club and the Casey Scorpions Football Club have announce the appointment of Greg Hutchinson as senior coach for the Scorpions in 2008. Hutchinson will also play a key role in the development of the Saints' younger players in this newly created full-time position and will work closely with Danny Sexton, St Kilda's Development Coach. Hutchinson has an outstanding background of coaching experience with over 20 years at the elite levels in the AFL and VFL. He was most recently with the Kangaroos as a midfield coach and is looking forward to working in a full-time capacity to strengthen the St Kilda/Casey alignment.

... Another great appointment to add to the others already in place, I don't care if he is a Casey or Club appointment he is another full time quality person at the club, if he is full time then he will have to spend his days with the Saints and his nights with Casey, all that adds up to one thing, a better understanding of our developing players, game plans, ability and attitude of our list ... all of which will result in a greater chance of Casey winning and our list developing faster. - 'RBnW' SS

Aussie Jones one of final three candidates for Scorps coach
Former Dandenong and Carlton forward Rohan Welsh is the latest name to emerge in the Casey Scorpions' ongoing coaching race. Welsh coached the Oakleigh Chargers to the TAC Cup premiership in 2006 and was honoured by being named coach of the year at that level in the same season. Peter Banfield, who guided the Scorpions to their first Victorian Football League (VFL) finals appearance in four seasons this year, resigned in September, but the decision on the new coach could now drag into the first week of November. Sources have revealed that the final three candidates for the position are Welsh, Austinn Jones and Tony Liberatore. They will all be interviewed this week. Jones is in contention after failing to agree to terms with TAC Cup side the Sandringham Dragons. The Scorpions have hit several snags in the last week, with applicants Ashley Prescott and Adrian Fletcher pulling out. It is believed that former Geelong, St Kilda, Brisbane and Fremantle player Fletcher was offered the job, but knocked it back to become the midfield coach at Brisbane. Prescott accepted an assistant coaching position with Essendon. Casey general manager Brian Woodman said this trend was causing problems for all Victorian Football League (VFL) clubs.

Scorpions stars weigh up futures
The fallout from former Casey Scorpions coach Peter Banfield's resignation is far from over, with star veterans Steven Harrison and Nigel Carmody set to leave. Banfield, 41, quit his post after the Scorpions decided to advertise his position last month. Harrison's father John, the former chairman of the football executive at the club, also walked out after the decision. Speaking after winning his fifth Gardner-Clark Medal on Friday, Steve Harrison, 27, revealed his disgust at how Casey had treated Banfield. "I think all the young guys are fine and understand this is what happens in football, and I understand that a bit as well," he said. "But people keep telling me it's a business and a corporation, but this club has never been that to me and it's never been that over a period of time - we would never have survived if it was. "If I wasn't emotional about the club, I wouldn't have the memories I do and wouldn't have played the way I did for the jumper and the club over that period of time" ... Casey captain Carmody, who was runner-up in the Gardner-Clark Medal, is also weighing up his options after the Banfield saga. "I won't deny that Pete's departure hasn't got something to do with it, but I'm at a point in my career where I look at every year very carefully and will do for every remaining year of my career," Carmody said. "I'll be looking at my options more than I ever have." Prahran resident Carmody will remain in the VFL, but is likely to move to an inner-city club.

Aussie Jones to Scorps rumours continue
Pressure from Saints forced me out: Banfield
A bitter Peter Banfield said the Casey Scorpions had shown him no respect or loyalty by deciding to advertise the senior coaching position. Banfield resigned last Thursday morning, saying he thought he deserved better than to be told he would be shortlisted for the job ... Banfield suggested AFL partner St Kilda would be happy to see him gone so it could set about gaining greater control of the Scorpions ... Casey football executive chairman John Harrison also resigned, in protest at the club's failure to give Banfield a fourth year ... There is speculation former Saint Aussie Jones will apply for the job.
The Article Paul Amy/InsideFooty/110ct07

Peter Banfield resigned . . . after being told his position would be advertised.

Casey Scorpions' coach of three seasons Peter Banfield has walked out in anger after the Victorian Football League club decided to advertise his position last week. John Harrison, former chairman of the football executive and father of champion Scorpions midfielder Steven, also quit following the decision. Casey has held discussions with its AFL affiliate St Kilda in recent weeks and together they chose to make the senior coaching post full-time. The club reviews the coaching position annually but had not advertised Banfield's position in his previous two seasons.

The Scorpions told Banfield, who led Casey to its first finals appearance in four years this season, that he would be on the short list of candidates if he was interested in applying. But Banfield, 41, declined to go through the interview process and was disappointed he was not offered the job unchallenged. "They either want me to coach or not to coach - I won't be the benchmark for other coaches," the physical education teacher at Aquinas College in Ringwood said. "Honestly, some people forget, as I said to (Scorpions president) John Sharkie, what state the club was in when I took it over. I'm really proud of the work I've done and the opportunities I've given to the players."

Casey general manager Brian Woodman explained that the club's decision to test the market was due to the belief that prospective coaches may not have applied for the job in the past because of its part-time status. He revealed that there had already been three expressions of interest for the vacant post, with applications closing on 3 October. Candidates will then be subjected to an interview process, psychological testing and other forms of analysis. The Scorpions hope to make a decision by the end of next month.

St Kilda will play a major role in deciding the incoming coach, with its general manager of football development, Tony Elshaug, and general manager, Ken Sheldon, expected to take part in the process. "Peter resigned - it was a choice he's made and it is always disappointing to lose good people in your organisation," Elshaug said. "He has made the decision to resign and now we have to move on with the business of running the football club in the best way possible." For Banfield, however, the push for a full-time coach has more to do with St Kilda acquiring greater control over Casey. "From my point of view, I really looked after the culture and history of the club this year, even when there was pressure put on me to play more St Kilda players at various stages," he said. "I think it's a given that St Kilda will be having a larger presence in the working of the club with a full-time coach."

Harrison believes that Banfield deserved another year before the full-time role was introduced in 2009 and that it could have been handled better. Banfield leaves the Scorpions with a record of 20 wins, 34 losses and one draw.

MATCH REPORT Scorps go down to the Borough
Just got back from the game and was disapointed with a few. (M) Clarke and Voss where slow but Voss did come into it in the second half when the pace went off the game. Armo had a shocker of a first quarter, barely touched it and made silly errors when he didn't have it. Real attitude problem, does not seem to be fit enough. But has all the potential in the world. Came into it in the final quarter, got some hard ball and put on some tackles. Needs to have a heart to heart with the coach. What does he want out of his football. Needs to improve his fitness 1000%, he does not make enough contests and does not seem to care at the moment. One of many who have to lift this pre-season. Brooks was everywhere in the ruck. His kicking is excellent, good hands and reads the play well. Will never be the big tackling power guy but was the most skillful player out there today. when Watts came off after copping a blow from Rix, Brooks was forced down forward. Liked Walls game, good timer of the spoil. Rix was useless, dropped marks, struggled around the ground and all his hit outs went to the opposition. If you had no idea about the past histories and just watched todays game most people would select brooks over Rix.

MATCH REPORT Port upset Casey Scorpions
Port upset Casey Scorpions, also hit by late withdrawals, by 13 points at Casey Fields yesterday after scraping into the eight . . . Port Melbourne coach Saade Ghazi said he selected a better balanced running side and this made a difference against the Scorpions. "They had a lot of tall players in and that probably helped us a little bit, took a few runners out," Ghazi said. "Troy Makepeace didn't play but they still had their 12 St Kilda guys. To win there on their home ground after losing to them twice during the year was a good performance." Port midfielder David Spriggs continued his hot form with 23 possessions. "His last month he has probably been in our best one or two players. He's been terrific, he is really hard and tough." Port on-baller David Robbins had about 25 touches in what Ghazi felt was an all-round team effort.

Allocation of TRUenergy VFL Finals Matches - Week 1
. . . Casey Fields was designated by the VFL to host the Second Elimination Final between Casey Scorpions and Port Melbourne as it is viewed as one of, if not the premier VFL venue. Also, the VFL is appreciative of the support it received from the City Of Casey in establishing Casey Fields and welcoming the Scorpions into its community. The match will be played on a Sunday to allow the supporters of the Scorpions affiliate St Kilda to attend.

R20 Scorpions take points from Dolphins
On a beautiful Saturday afternoon, the Casey Scorpions stormed home to book a spot in the VFL Finals starting next week with a come-from-behind 10 point victory over arch rival Frankston at Casey Fields. The Scorpions, having lost last week to fellow finalist Bendigo, were aiming to fine tune preparations for their first finals assault in four years . . . After the disappointment of the loss on Friday night against the West Coast Eagles, Saints fans will be encouraged from the following performances of these Saints listed players who will be pushing for promotion against Richmond in next Saturday afternoon's do or die clash, providing those Crows have a case of Friday night flu against Collingwood! Clinton Jones had a busy day around the ground to finish with 36 possessions: 19 kicks, 17 handballs, 8 marks, 6 tackles, 4 clearances, and was the Scorpions leading possession winner. David Armitage was not far behind with 25 possessions: 15 kicks, 10 handballs, 7 marks, 4 clearances, 6 Forward 50 entries and was highly effective. James Gwilt worked very hard as usual in the back line and he finished with 24 possessions: 15 kicks, 9 handballs, 5 marks, 2 spoils, 1 goal. Robert Eddy finished next with 20 possessions and has had a fine season so far: 15 kicks, 5 handballs, 7 marks, 4 spoils. Jarryn Geary continued his great form in recent weeks and he finished also with 20 possessions: 7 kicks, 13 handballs, 4 spoils. Andrew Thompson finished next best with 19 possessions (10 kicks, 9 handballs, 7 marks, 4 tackles, 3 clearances) and he was very effective in many passages of play and will press for selection. The quartet of Barry Brooks, Michael Rix, Fergus Watts (3 goals) and Jarred Allen all finished with 14 possessions and all made valuable contributions to the win. This result was an interesting one, seeing that Casey had to win 'ugly' to get the points.

R21 Scorpions sting in tail end of season
. . . Kicking into a tricky wind favouring the South Gippsland Highway end, the Scorpions battled hard in the opening term. They drilled the first major of the afternoon through Stefan Garrubba, who continued his strong goalkicking form after bagging four the weekend before . . . Rookie-listed Saint Jarryn Geary (20 possessions) quelling the influence of star Frankston forward Justin Berry, Casey captain Nigel Carmody (30) in magnificent touch, and Clinton Jones (36) winning the ball at will, the Scorpions came storming back. St Kilda big man Fergus Watts goaled from a free kick before snapping a successful off-balance shot to put Casey in front. The Scorpions dominated out of the centre and capped off the period with six-pointers to Kyle Matthews and James Gwilt to create a 17-point buffer at half-time. They looked set to go on with the job after the main break and twice restored their edge with goals to Adam Parker and Watts in the third term, but suddenly proceedings went awry.

Watts he have to do?
All Saints forward Fergus Watts wants is a chance to show the football world just what he can do. After four years in the AFL system, the 21-year-old is still awaiting his first full pre-season and the opportunity to let his potential come to the surface. Only now, in the second half of 2007, is the powerfully-built youngster starting to unleash his talents after 18 long months on the sidelines due to injury. At 196cm and 98kgs, Watts is a rare package and one AFL clubs are aware don't come along too often. That's why the Saints snaffled him at the end of 2005 when he decided to depart Adelaide two seasons after being drafted from WesleyCollege and the Sandringham Under 18 side. Watts booted a goal in his first match for his new club - against West Coast in round one of 2006 - before shattering his ankle for the second time in his career while playing for the Casey Scorpions just two weeks later. The result has been a long and frustrating trip along the road to recovery, although Watts is staying positive in the hope that his time will come. He booted seven goals in a match for Casey earlier this month, and is starting to regain confidence not only in his once-broken leg, but also his ability to play at the top level.

Allen makes welcome return to field
St Kilda player Jarryd Allen has overcome a serious elbow injury and is back playing for the Saints' Victorian Football League affiliate, the Casey Scorpions. Allen, who was drafted from the Calder Cannons last year, suffered a nasty elbow injury in the pre-season which landed him on the long-term injury list less than four months after being plucked from the TAC Cup. He required surgery to repair ligament damage to his arm after dislocating his elbow. The injury was meant to keep Allen sidelined for eight to 12 weeks, but he spent 15 in the stands before returning to the Casey reserves recently. The versatile forward said he was relieved to have overcome his elbow complaint and was looking to consolidate towards the end of his first season in the AFL system. "It's just good to be back playing footy," Allen said. "I took a while to get going, but I ended up with about 17 touches in my first game back in the twos, so I was pretty happy about that. It's just good to be back out there playing again after so long on the sidelines." Allen said the St Kilda medical staff were happy to err on the side of caution with the injury, especially given his age. The Saints took Allen as a 17-year-old with pick number 59 in November and see him as a project player. He was All-Australian at the NAB AFL Under 18 National Championships last year after playing a starring role in Vic Metro's title win. Although Allen harbours no desire to make his AFL debut this season, and doesn't expect to, stranger things have happened.

R18 Late withdrawals cost Casey
The loss of four players in 24 hours proved too much for the Casey Scorpions to overcome as the Bendigo Bombers grabbed a last-gasp seven-point victory at Casey Fields on Sunday. St Kilda ruckman Matthew Clarke was a late inclusion in the Saints line-up on Saturday, while Jayden Attard, Clinton Jones and Matthew Ferguson were withdrawn on the morning of the Victorian Football League (VFL) encounter. Veteran playmaker Troy Makepeace also missed with general soreness after the previous round's 61-point triumph over Tasmania. To make matters worse, Bendigo fielded an imposing outfit, with demoted Essendon stars David Hille, Jobe Watson and Damien Peverill joining such players as Kepler Bradley, Bachar Houli, Courtney Johns and Mark Bolton in the VFL team. The Bombers' talent and experience was on show early as they romped out to a 31-point lead. Finally, after 27 minutes, the brilliant Kyle Mathews swept onto a loose ball for Casey and duly slotted through the Scorpions' opener . . . The missed chances hurt even more moments later when Bendigo's Aaron Connaughton snapped truly. Watts went some way to making amends by snaring a strong, contested mark and goaling from 20 metres before Sweeney kicked his second major for the afternoon on the run to make it an eight-point game.

R19 Axed Bombers shine
. . . Essendon's axed trio David Hille, Damien Peverill and Jobe Watson were all prominent in the Bendigo Bombers' fighting seven-point win over Casey Scorpions at Casey Fields yesterday. Bendigo, emerging as a premiership threat after a slow start to the season, clinched a place in the final eight but lost Adam Ramanauskas (back) in the opening minutes and Courtney Johns in the second quarter.

R18 Scorpions trash Tassie
. . . Casey coach Peter Banfield bemoaned his team's kicking and highlighted its new standing by downplaying the triumph. "It was a reasonable type of win, but we probably didn't play all too well," he said. "It was good to go down there and win, but we missed a few shots. One of these days we'll kick straight and (that opposition had better) watch out." Banfield would not be drawn on whether the Scorpions were certainties for September action, but revealed that he felt they were a tier below the top few clubs. "Geelong and Sandringham are the benchmarks of the competition," he said. "We've improved a lot in a number of areas, but it's still hard to draw a line through where we're at, but I suppose we'll find out soon."

R18 Scorpions Review
The Scorpions started in their usual fashion with lots of points and lots of the ball. Early hard work by Tasmania was showing on the scoreboard and the Scorpions had to start kicking goals to take the lead. Fergus Watts and Brett Voss took on the lead role up forward, and were set up through the midfield by running play from Kyle Matthews and Troy Makepeace. The Backs were holding the Devils with James Gwilt, (celebrating his twenty First on the day of the Game, Happy Birthday James) and Matty Ferguson, and after half time the Scorpions ran away from the young Tasmanian team.

R18 Scorpions crush Tasmania
. . . After the disappointment of the loss on Saturday night against the Sydeny Swans, Saints fans will be encouraged from the following performances of these Saints listed players who will be pushing for promotion against the Fremantle Dockers next Saturday afternoon. Andrew Thompson had a busy day around the ground to finish with 30 possessions: 9 kicks, 21 handballs, 10 clearances, and was the Scorpions leading possession winner for the Casey Scorpions. Jarryn Geary continued his good vein of form from last week to finish with 19 possessions: 10 kicks, 9 handballs, 3 tackles. Barry Brooks found the football and he finished with 17 possessions: 12 kicks, 5 handballs, 8 marks, 6 Forward 50 entries. James Gwilt on his 21st Birthday finished with 16 possessions: 10 kicks, 6 handballs, 4 tackles, 5 Forward 50 entries and toiled hard in the back line. James Wall also finished with 16 possessions: 11 kicks, 5 handballs, 4 spoils and along with Gwilt kept the back line strong. R18 Scorpions looking at finals after 10 goal victory
. . . The Casey Scorpions enhanced their final-eight aspirations with a 10-goal victory over wooden spooners the Tassie Devils at the Bellerive Oval. Scorpions coach Peter Banfield praised St Kilda list players full-forward Fergus Watts, who booted seven goals from nine shots, half-forward Brett Voss (30 touches, 2 goals) and midfielder Andrew Thompson (30 possessions, 10 centre-square clearances). He said former Adelaide ruckman Matthew Clarke had dominated the centre clearances working in tandem with Barry Brooks. The final scores, Casey Scorpions 16.18 (114) defeated Tasmania 8.5 (53).

R18 Young Devils show some bite
In what has become an audition for the Devils' "generation next", the likes of Aaron Joseph, Alex Grima, Tom Bellchambers, Jaye Bowden, Tim Mohr and Kieran McShane gave glimpses of promise before eventually being swamped by their bigger, stronger, more experienced Casey Scorpion opponents at Bellerive yesterday. Halfway through the final quarter the sixth-placed Scorpions led by just 26 points -- almost a "victory" for the bottom-dwelling Devils, with a side made up of 68 per cent of players under 20 years of age. Eventually, like so many matches before, the longer the game went the worse the Devils became, with Casey kicking the final six goals of the match to win comfortably by 61 points, 16.18 (114) to 8.5 (53). . . . Repeatedly the younger Devils were caught holding the ball, but it did not stop them trying to take on their bigger opponents and trying to run and break the lines. "They did put themselves into the contest and that is all you want," Devils coach Daryn Cresswell said. "Some decision-making stuff in terms of when to get rid of it, that comes back to training together more often and knowing what your teammates are going to do. We are working towards that next year." Compared with the youthful Devils, Casey had the likes of AFL-experienced players Brett Voss (24 touches, two goals) and Andrew Thompson (28 possessions). Added to this, Saints-listed forward Fergus Watts kicked seven goals against undersized defenders, while another fellow Saint, former King Islander Barry Brooks, starred and will be one of the first names on the Devils' recruiting hit-list should he be chopped at the end of the season from the AFL.

R17 Scorpions 'point' to big win
The Casey Scorpions' juggernaut kept rolling with a comprehensive 39-point come-from-behind win over Port Melbourne at TEAC Oval on Saturday. The victory overshadowed another horrid goal-kicking display, with 19 behinds in its 127-point total. It was an important result for the Scorpions, after dropping last week's blockbuster clash against the highly fancied Coburg Tigers and gave the club its fifth success in six outings. Casey now sits in sixth position, with seven wins, seven losses and a draw and a healthy percentage in excess of 100. To make the triumph even more noteworthy, it was achieved without inspirational captain Nigel Carmody, who was serving a one-game ban for charging Tiger ruckman Angus Graham in the previous round. And it was not solely the St Kilda-listed stars that delivered the goods for the Scorpions, with a host of Victorian Football League players making strong contributions. The most impressive showing came from 188-centimetre debutant Daniel Unsworth, who matched up on Borough tall Jeremy Dukes and kept the danger man to just two goals. Casey knocked up getting the ball, with Saints foursome Jarryn Geary (37 touches), Robert Eddy (27), Andrew McQualter (26) and Andrew Thompson (26) leading the way. In all, the Scorpions gathered a mammoth 392 possessions to the Borough's meagre 241 in an imposing performance.

R17 Scorpions turn the tables on Port Melbourne
. . . After the dramatic draw on Friday night against the Western Bulldogs, Saints fans will be encouraged from the following performances of these Saints listed players who will be pushing for promotion against the Sydney Swans this Saturday night. Jarryn Geary had his best game for the year to finish with a team high 37 possessions (17 kicks, 10 marks, 20 handballs, 4 tackles) and has found some fine form. He was supported by Robert Eddy who finished with 27 possessions (19 kicks, 8 handballs, 6 marks, 3 clearances). Both were supported by Andrew Thompson and Andrew McQualter who both finished with 26 possessions (Thompson: 13 kicks, 13 handballs, 5 tackles, 3 clearances), (McQualter:12 kicks, 14 handballs, 6 tackles, 4 clearances). David Armitage finished with 22 possessions (9 kicks, 13 handballs, 2 tackles, 2 clearances) and continued to attack the football in tight contests. Next best was Brett Voss, who finished with 21 possessions (10 kicks, 11 handballs, 4 clearances). Special mentions go to the defenders of Matthew Ferguson (19 possessions), Raphael Clarke (17 possessions) and James Gwilt (15 possessions) who worked very hard on the day. Barry Brooks also kicked well in front of goal and he led the goal scorers list with four goals. This result has been a great one for the Casey Scorpions and the team has continued to play with passion and pride over the past weeks. With some big names still to return to the side, Casey will look to seal a finals berth in coming weeks. With this win, the Scorpions have a great opportunity to consolidate their spot in the top eight as they continue their march towards the finals. The team heads south to Bellerive Oval to take on Tasmania next Saturday. If you can't get on a plane north, try and get on a plane south instead! Go Saints and go Scorpions!

R17 Scorps keep final hopes alive
. . . Casey Scorpions kept their finals hopes alive after overcoming a first-half deficit to defeat Port Melbourne by 39 points at the TEAC Oval yesterday. Scorpions skipper Nigel Carmody said his side had broken the game open with a 10-goal burst in the third quarter with St Kilda big man Barry Brooks booting four goals and David Armitage three. Other Saints players to figure in the goals were Brett Voss, Michael Rix and Raphael Clarke, who each booted two majors. Best players included St Kilda rookie Jarryn Geary, who had 37 disposals on the half-back line, Andrew Thompson and centre half-back Matthew Ferguson.

R17 Match Report
Went to the Game at TEAC oval and saw the boys run over Port Melbourne. Some observations. . . Doesn't necessarily match with the official report but I tell it as I see it! Barry Brooks played well as a forward kicking 3 or 4 goals. Some sign of great innate ball skills, but fear it may be too late to redeem a career? Fergus (Watts) played as the main full forward but to me couldn't hold a mark. Kept working and presenting. I don't think he is AFL ready yet. To me the best Saints player was (Robert) Eddy. The radio commentator kept on calling (David) Armitage but 3 times out of 4 it was Eddy. Armitage was also pretty good in and under. I think he would have done a better job than CJ (Clinton Joners) last night. (Brett Voss) V2 was in and out of the game. He got a very heavy knock in the last quarter, was down on the ground with the trainers, but when the ball came back he jumped up and got back into the game. (Michael) Rix was good without being dominant. Palmed down to Scorps advantage particularly later in the game. To me Raphael (Ckarke) was a disappointment. He also hobbled off in the final quarter so I hope it isn't a bad injury. (James) Gwilt was presenting in defence but didn't dominate. Same could be said for (Matthew) Ferguson. (James) Geary worked hard throughout the game and has a good turn of speed and good awareness. Still looks to light for the seniors. (Andrew) McQualter was in the thick of it without starring. In my opinion my votes for Scorps players would be 1 to Voss, 2 to Brooks and 3 to Eddy.

R16 Tigers' bite stings Scorpions
The Casey Scorpions' four-match winning streak came to a disappointing end at the hands of the Coburg Tigers in round 16 Victorian Football League action at Casey Fields on Sunday. The 18-point defeat was a frustrating result for the Scorpions as they had their chances in the much-hyped encounter and finished with two more scoring shots than their rivals. Further bad news followed after the contest for Casey, with captain Nigel Carmody accepting a one-match sanction from the VFL for charging Richmond tall Angus Graham in the opening quarter . . . Coming off the bye and with leading goalkicker Justin Sweeney absent, it was the Scorpions who had the scoreboard ticking over first, when Saint Andrew McQualter split the middle after receiving the first of several free kicks Casey benefited from early on . . . Schulz banged through Coburg's opener and added two of the next three goals as the Tigers took control. His Scorpion opponent James Wall was banished to the bench for James Gwilt and it proved to be an astute move. However, it was Coburg that held an 11-point buffer at the first break. Steven Harrison was as dogged as ever for Casey at the stoppages, with his tackling and clearance work a feature, but demoted Tiger veteran Greg Tivendale was wreaking havoc through his hard running and sublime left-foot disposal. St Kilda youngster Robert Eddy was switched onto Tivendale and did a commendable job, although the latter's class stood out all afternoon . . . Brett Voss, whose presence inside 50 metres grew the longer the match went on, wasted two opportunities at the start of the second half to give him just one six-pointer from five attempts.

R16 Scorps - Inaccurate kicking but Voss gets 6
The Coburg Tigers upset an inaccurate Casey Scorpions by 18 points at Casey Fields yesterday. Angus Graham, Jay Schulz (four goals) and Greg Tivendale were prominent for Coburg, while Brett Voss (six goals) shone for the Scorpions. Coburg's Jarrad Oakley-Nicholls was reported for striking Casey's Andrew McQualter.
