My hardest decision: Harvey Dual St Kilda Brownlow Medallist Robert Harvey says his decision to play on next year for his 21st AFL season was the hardest he has had to make in his career. The 36-year-old, speaking less than a week after announcing he would play on for a final season, said plenty of factors had to be considered before deciding to saddle up again in 2008. "It was pretty difficult. It's the most difficult I've had," Harvey said. "Even at the end of last year it was still really up in the air, but my body's been able to hold up, although you've got to take a lot of factors into account - your body and form and more importantly the club's view. I was really wary about what the club thought and if there was any hesitation from their part, I would've retired." Harvey said the retirements of Fraser Gehrig, Andrew Thompson, Brett Voss and Matthew Clarke - and probably Aaron Hamill - did not sway him to remain on at the club to maintain some experience. He was also pleased to be playing another season under Ross Lyon, who will coach St Kilda for his second year in 2008. The Article Matt Burgan/saints.com.au/25Sept07 7500 for Saints rebels The group fighting to take over the running of the St Kilda Football Club believes it will have the endorsement of up to 10,000 club members by the end of next week. Having secured the proxies of more than 7500 members by last night, Footy First maintained its attack on the St Kilda board, claiming it was hiding behind legal moves in refusing to bring forward the date for an election. Footy First head Greg Westaway said the board was "hijacking" the process. "Again, the current president has ignored Saints' members and discredited the voice of members who are expressing their thoughts," Westaway said. Footy First says it has followed correct process for a general meeting to be held on October 23. But the board is exploring its legal options, which could delay the meeting. The Article Damian Barrett/HeraldSun/22Sept07 Saints reject EGM date change The St Kilda Football Club has dismissed a move by St Kilda Footy First, the group seeking to take control of the club's board, to bring forward an Extraordinary General Meeting set down for mid-November. In a prepared statement, the club described a notice calling for the EGM to be held in the last week of October rather than 12 November as 'mischievous'. The revised notice "clearly limits the club's ability to respond in reasonable time, given the statutory 21 day notice period to members and printing, mailing house and postage requirements" and is invalid, the statement said. The club reaffirmed its view that the challenge to the current board should be resolved by the members at an EGM as soon as possible. The Article Sportal/22Sept07 Saints act on challenge AAP/RealFooty/23Sept07 Saints set to deal with board challenge AAP/RealFooty/22Sept07 Saints set a date for board spill HeraldSun/23Sept07 St Kilda Football Club Board Statement The St Kilda Football Club today announced that a Board meeting will be called at the earliest possible time to set a date for a General Meeting to resolve once and for all the notice of removal of directors, as issued by hostile Director John Gdanski. The Club is of the view that the challenge to the current Board must be resolved by the members at an EGM as soon as possible. The rebel group has now issued a second notice calling for a meeting 19 days earlier than the original notice (12th November), which clearly limits the Club's ability to respond in reasonable time, given the statutory 21 day notice period to members and printing, mailing house and postage requirements (20 Calender days). In the view of a majority of the Board, this was a mischievous attempt to unfairly limit the preparation of a proper response to members. The Club has received strong advice that John Gdanski's second notice is invalid on a number of counts, including the limited notice period. However, the Club is equally committed to calling an EGM where the members of the Club can and will decide the make up of their preferred Board. The Article saints.com.au/22Sept07 Harvey's a wanted Saint The reassurance that he was wanted was all it took to convince St Kilda champion Robert Harvey to prepare for a record 21st season at AFL/VFL level. Nursing an arm in plaster following an arthroscopy to replace a ligament in his left wrist, Harvey announced on Thursday that he would be back in Saints colours in 2008, chasing the premiership that's eluded him since his debut at Moorabbin as a 17-year-old in 1988. The dual Brownlow Medalist admitted he's been wrestling with retirement for the past three or four years and was convinced at the start of this year that season 2007 would be his last. "I've always been wary about wearing out the welcome mat," Harvey said. "Even though physically and mentally I still feel great and I still feel like I'm contributing and going in the right direction . . . it's very difficult to know what to do. I love the club but I didn't want to make the wrong decision and hopefully I haven't." The Article Angus Morgan/Sportal/20Sept07 St Kilda legend to embark on 21st season saints.com.au/20Sept07 Saint Harvey plays on for another year Caroline Wilson/RealFooty/19Sept07 Harvey will keep playing AAP/FoxSports/19Sept07 Harvey marks 21st season Robert Harvey will become the first player to celebrate a 21st season next year. The St Kilda champion, 36 last month, announced yesterday that he would commit to one more season. With his left arm in a cast after post-season surgery to repair a tendon in his wrist and flanked by coach Ross Lyon, Harvey said he wrestled long and hard with his emotions before deciding to build on his club-record 359 games. "As ridiculous as it probably sounds, I've always been very self-conscious about wearing out the welcome mat," Harvey said. "When it comes to the crunch, it's hard to do. This one was particularly hard because I honestly thought this was my last year. Even though physically and mentally I still feel great, I still feel like I'm contributing; it's really difficult to know what to do. Right up to the end (of the season) I was still in a dilemma about playing on." The Article Michael Horan/HeraldSun/21Sept07 Nathan Burke on SEN Thursday (rough notes) Nathan Burke was interviewed on SEN's 'Hungry for Sport' on Thursday morning. St Kilda Footy First? - Nathan said that the 'St Kilda Footy First' board challenging ticket now have 6,000 proxy votes in hand. He said that there are 23,000 eligible voters (adult members) and as St Kilda supporters are very passionate about their club he expects quite a few will want to have their say. Nathan said that it is normal to have 2-3,000 members vote in ordinary circumstances but as this is the first contested election for twelve years he expects a larger vote. He said that the SFF assembly have met with many supporters groups in Melbourne and Greg Westaway is planning to travel Interstate to meet supporters. He said that there are 1,100 supporters in Western Australia, which is second only to Carlton Chris Judd? - He said that if the club has the ability to procure him the SFF ticket would encourage negotiations and that Chris originally comes from Sandringham. Nathan said that he doesn't believe the current issues at Moorabbin would effect Chris's decision as he will be looking at a number of years and the issue at Moorabbin will only last for a short period of time but mentioned that our poor record on injuries may 'sway him the other way'. He said that the reported comments by Chris Judd's manager Paul Connors by Patrick Smith was petty and that he has more respect for Paul's professionalism than to think that would be an issue. Robert Harvey? - He said that he hasn't spoken to Robert lately about his future with St Kilda but would be wrapped if he does as 'it wouldn't be the same place without him'. On meeting with RB board? - Nathan said that they have had some contact with the incumbent board and that he hopes it continues. Source: WoM Ed/SEN - (This is only a rough outline and some misunderstandings or errors may have occurred) Whiff of feud puts Judd off Saints The deepening threat of instability at St Kilda appears to have dashed any hope of the Saints securing Chris Judd and is threatening to prompt the departure of centre half-back Matt Maguire. With a board challenge in train at Moorabbin, Judd, through his agent Paul Connors, is understood to have informed the Saints that he is not prepared even to meet with them for a discussion about his future, which seems to have been narrowed to Collingwood, Carlton, Melbourne and Essendon . . . While St Kilda was never Judd's preference - that is believed to be Collingwood, with Carlton also strongly in the frame - the destabilising political game being played at Moorabbin as the board of president Rod Butterss attempts to fight off a challenge has convinced the Judd camp to dismiss interest from the club. Further, with Connors also looking after the affairs of Maguire, and captain Luke Ball among others at St Kilda, protracted negotiations between the Saints and their centre half-back have stalled . . . St Kilda football operations manager Ken Sheldon, who vowed on behalf of the club on Monday that it would join the chase for Judd, said yesterday he had not officially been told the Saints were out of the running. "I haven't received confirmation of that at this stage," said Sheldon. "We're not intending to meet with him this week, no." The Article Stephen Rielly/RealFooty/20Sept07 Visit to surgeon is top priority for Judd Len Johnson/RealFooty/20Sept07 Check fine-print on Footy First ticket The Footy First group, which is challenging St Kilda's existing regime, has outlined an emphasis on football as "our reason for existing". And you'd presume that would be an emphasis on all things to do with St Kilda's football. But sources suggested to this column yesterday that one of the members of the Footy First ticket, Dana Nelson, is not exactly known for her fervent support of the Saints. In fact, it seems the managing director of Delaware North Companies Australia is a pretty keen Carlton supporter. Perhaps she's just heading down the well-worn path from Princes Park to Moorabbin, taken by Aaron Hamill, Ken Sheldon, "Wow" Jones, Peter McConville, Ricky Nixon, Spiro Kourkoumelis, Alex Marcou and other former players. The Article Warwick Green/TheAge/20Sept07 Dana Nelson recruited for boardroom strength Greg Westaway disclosed that Dana Nelson was not a Saints supporter at his first meeting with St Kilda members. He said that Dana was the only person on his ticket that was not previously a Saints supporter and that she was conscripted for her strong business Acumen and her ability to turn the club's dismal profit margins around regarding club functions and special events. Dana manages over 3500 employees at venues including Telstra Dome, Southern Cross Station, Rod Laver Arena, a portfolio of airports and transport hubs and others. Nathan Burke said that he wants the club's events to be great celebrations for all supporters and make good profits for the club. He said that the miserable profit margin on his farewell function and Robert Harvey's testimonal were pitiable. It is believed that Rod Butterss was not a member of St Kilda before his interest in the boardroom position and that Dana was not a "strong" Carlton supporter, in fact, she previously had little interest in sport. WoM Ed. Tuesday Board Meetings There was two board meetings on Tuesday. The evening meeting was expected that the sitting board members would have reviewed the current situation regarding the challenging ticket. They were also expected to develop further strategies to counter the strong attack by the SFF ticket. The incumbents may announce a new recruit to the board soon as there are rumour's that Rod Butterss (RB) has been courting some well-known and respected names around Melbourne. The Age reported that although Vice President Ross Levin is said to have issues with the RB Board he attended the board meeting yesterday but John Gdanski didn't. WoM Ed 'St Kilda Footy First' Update There is an update on the current board's challenging ticket St Kilda Footy First (SFF) website as a 'Message to Members'. One of the noticeable comments on the SFF update is that they have declared that SFF have already obtained three confirmed sponsors worth in excess of $1M. The message also states that they are also in discussions with many more potential sponsors but the companies have asked for confidentiality pending the EGM. It is believed that SFF have already received 5,000 proxy votes. WoM Ed 5000 back Saints takeover ticket The group seeking to take over St Kilda Football Club has received staggering support to roll the Rod Butterss board. In just three days, a huge 5000 proxy votes have backed the Footy First challenge. Footy First is hopeful of receiving another thousand-plus votes in today's mail as momentum continues to swing against the current Saints' board. The endorsement of the takeover group yesterday saw it issue the club with a legal notice seeking to bring forward an extraordinary general meeting. It is believed the St Kilda board ratified the change at a meeting last night. Initially scheduled for November 12, the meeting now seems certain to be held on October 23 at Moorabbin Town Hall. Footy First head Greg Westaway said the 5000-plus members supporting his push had effectively demanded the election to determine the composition of the Saints' board to be resolved quickly. "The one thing that the current president and I agree on is that this challenge needs to move quickly for the best interests of the club," Westaway said. The Article Damien Barrett/HeraldSun/19Sept07 Saints' battle in new low with car park fracas More drma was expected to unfold at St Kilda's board meeting early today following an altercation in the Moorabbin car park last Thursday involving club directors and a staff member who briefly considered legal action. Saints' director Glen Casey could face questions from fellow directors and lawyer Richard Loveridge regarding the incident, which involved a terse conversation with the staff member concerning the leaking of the club's membership database. It is believed Casey told the staffer that the alleged actions could result in 12 months' prison, although Casey and his president, Rod Butterss, who also was present at the time, have downplayed the incident, claiming it was a light-hearted exchange. Another witness to the conversation, which occurred following the Butterss team's press conference at the club, has put forward a signed witness statement to Loveridge, who was appointed by club chief executive Archie Fraser in a bid to adhere to the correct processes regarding the coming extraordinary general meeting. The drama is just one of several byplays likely to unfold at Moorabbin today, with club vice-president Ross Levin also expected to come under scrutiny regarding his role in the Greg Westaway challenge to the Butterss team entitled St Kilda Footy First. The Article Caroline Wilson/RealFooty/18Sept07 Richardson wins Tiger award Rebecca Williams/HeraldSun/20Sept07 Saints to move haloes for Judd . . . Every Victorian club will make a bid for Judd, and St Kilda have officially joined the queue. The club's football general manager Ken Sheldon said: "We have already contacted his manager who said Chris would be delighted to talk to us. The best player in the league is out of contract and we are after him. While we have a strong belief in our own group, every St Kilda supporter's imagination would be fired by the thought of Judd in St Kilda colours." Sheldon said while there was much to consider, the club would chase Judd vigorously and assemble the best possible packages to offer West Coast. "We are already looking at what we can do to get Judd to St Kilda. We have made him a priority. We can make a very attractive deal to West Coast," Sheldon said. It is believed part of the package would include contact with a group of businessmen to help Judd plan and prepare for his life after football. Whether Judd would contemplate going to Moorabbin while there is a board challenge due in November is another matter. But Judd would slip into a skilled midfield not afraid to do the hard running of the modern game. It might just prompt dual Brownlow medallist Robert Harvey to play one more season. His form this year certainly was good enough. A midfield rotation of Steven Baker, Luke Ball, Nick Dal Santo, Lenny Hayes, Harvey, Xavier Clarke and Judd appeals. For bargaining power, St Kilda's first pick in the draft is nine but the club would be prepared to trade vigorously to get a higher pick. Judd said he had no preferred club but would sit down with all suitors over the next few weeks. He said he had not spoken to any club yet: "I can say that with a clear conscience." The Article Patrick Smith/FoxSports/18Sept7 Speculation Sweeney and Raymond gone? It is believed that Justin Sweeney and Phillip Raymond may have been delisted by St Kilda. There is no official conformation regarding this but it is expected to appear on the St Kilda website today (No confirmation by any media cource by 830pm Monday). A rumour was floated on the internet site footytalk.com.au on Sunday night that Michael Rix has been re-signed for three years but this is speculated to be highly unlikey because three years would be a longer period of time than is expected and it also hasn't been confirmed by the club. WoM Ed. Luke Ball optimistic on groin surgery . . . St Kilda is optimistic Luke Ball's groin surgery last week will help ease his chronic problems with osteitis pubis. Ball had an adductor release operation after again battling with groin problems and is on track to start pre-season with his teammates. "At this time of the year it always feels pretty good, but it was another frustrating year," Ball said. "I had a little bit of work done to it last week. It's minor work." The Article Jon Ralph/HeraldSun/16Sept07 Roo misses All Australian Although Sam Fisher, Nick Dal Santo and Nick Riewoldt were included in the 40 nominations for the All-Australian Team, none were were selected for the official team on Monday night. St Kilda fans and some media presenters are surprised that Nick Riewoldt didn't make the team considering his performances this year. WoM Ed The 2007 All-Australian team B: Matthew Scarlett (Geelong), Darren Glass (West Coast), Darren Milburn (Geelong). HB: Andrew McLeod (Adelaide - capt), Matthew Egan (Geelong), Campbell Brown (Hawthorn). C: Kane Cornes (Port), Jim Bartel (Geelong), Chad Cornes (Port) HF: Steve Johnson (Geelong), Jonathan Brown (Brisbane - vice-capt), Brent Harvey (Kangaroos) F: Brad Johnson (Bulldogs), Matthew Pavlich (Fremantle), Cameron Mooney (Geelong) Rucks: Dean Cox (West Coast), Daniel Kerr (West Coast), Gary Ablett (Geelong) I/C: Joel Corey (Geelong), Cameron Ling (Geelong), Brendon Lade (Port), Dustin Fletcher (Essendon) Nine Cats named All-Australian Sportal/15Sept07 Saints, Hawks firm in Judd chase St Kilda and Hawthorn, the clubs that passed on recruiting Chris Judd six years ago, have firmed in the race to secure the AFL's most prized signature . . . Carlton has room under its salary cap are are well-placed to give early trade picks - having the first and third selections in this year's national draft. But Essendon officials could meet Judd this week and "believe that we have a strong argument". Collingwood and Melbourne are also known to be keen on arguably the best player in the competition. Richmond has the No.2 pick in the draft and its top officials will meet in the next few days to decide their position. St Kilda football manager Ken Sheldon made it clear today the Saints would push hard. "We're very interested, we would love to have Chris," Sheldon said. "We have a strong belief in our group, we'll explore every option. We are keen to meet with him" . . . Unlike Carlton, St Kilda and Hawthorn cannot sway West Coast with high draft picks. But the Saints, who selected Luke Ball with their No.2 pick in the 2001 draft (Judd was selected at No.3), could become involved via third-party trades which boost their draft picks and bargaining power. The Article AAP/HeraldSun/17Sept07 Saints, Hawks and Dons in chase AAP/HeraldSun/18Sept07 Bottom line discussion tonight re Judd Justin Chadwick/Sportal/TheAge/17Sept07 Wheels and deals: a St Kilda power play . . . A potential new saviour in the form of freight millionaire Greg Westaway has risen to challenge incumbent millionaire president Rod Butterss. Not long ago they were golf partners. After a week of turmoil, Saints members must now decide whether to throw out the present board at a November general meeting, or simply keep on truckin'. They will consider that as they watch rival clubs with greater stability steal the September limelight . . . Yesterday, Butterss confirmed that two directors had begun legal action over the comments, which Westaway maintains were not aimed at the current board. What then of Fox? It is said that he has advised Butterss to stand down to end the bloodletting. "He is genuinely acting only because, like most St Kilda people, he's seen enough of it and he wants it to end," a source says. The rebels boast two big weapons: former players Nathan Burke and Andrew Thompson. Burke first met Westaway a decade ago in a promotion where players spent time with influential sponsors. He became involved with the challenge through John Gdanski, a current board member who has defected to the challengers and says Westaway is not a long-term friend. Initially Burke wondered if Westaway was a "liniment sniffer" - a groupie chasing the glamour of elite football. But he found a family man wanting to make the club better and bring it the glory Saints fans crave. "He knows business and he's an affable guy. He surrounds himself with very down-to-earth people, he is in control," Burke says. The rebels say they want to get revenue back. Burke says he was disillusioned by a lack of resources (when on the coaching staff). The Article Dan Silkstone/RealFooty/16Sept07 Club employee threatened by director As the Saints remained headed for a November 12 election - after president Rod Butterss announced he would fight to retain control - an unsavoury incident between club officials took place at Moorabbin. A club employee was verbally threatened by a Saints director in the car park, after being accused of being involved with the rival ticket challenging Butterss. The incident left the employee extremely distressed and it was reported to club management. It is expected a lawyer independent to the club's runnings will be asked to investigate . . . Butterss also questioned the conscience of two directors who have sided with Footy First. John Gdanski has joined the rival ticket, while vice-president Ross Levin has been in a long-running feud with Butterss. "Whether or not the two current members of the board, who are acting in concert with the rebel group, should remain on the board in these circumstances, this will be a matter for their conscience and ultimately our members," Butterss said. "We do find it difficult to understand how the rebel group would propose including two dissident directors who have been on the current board for a combined period of 12 years." Gdanski yesterday rejected the claim by Butterss. "My conscience is very clear. At all times I have complied with my directors' duties and I have moved on this because of a number of issues," Gdanski said. "It takes courage under fire to move." Another man crying foul of the rebel group-ironically- is comedian Steve Bedwell. Remember him? Bedwell was the man who came forward in June to pledge that there would be a challenge to Rod Butterss' board. While his push was mocked in sections of the media, Bedwell said he was the man who began the Footy First movement, but they'd now turned their back on him and he was angry at being left out. "The Westaway ticket is not returning my calls even though the genesis of the ideas were Andrew Westaway's (son of Greg) and mine," Bedwell told pssst. "We had several meetings. They let me take the heat and abandonded me and now it's taken an unsavoury turn. It's completely smoke and mirrors stuff." The Snippet - from 'Pssst' TheAge Vodafone ends St Kilda link Key St Kilda sponsor Vodafone has ended its relationship with the club, leaving the Saints without a naming-rights sponsor next season. As revealed exclusively in The Age this week, Vodafone has decided not to exercise a 12-month option on its contract, which expires on October 31. Vodafone's general manager for Victoria and Tasmania, Paul Guerra, said: "We're more enthusiastic than ever to continue our association with football and we're currently exploring our sponsorship options in Melbourne for the 2008 season." Vodafone already sponsors the Eagles, the Power and the Lions. St Kilda chief Archie Fraser said the Saints already were seeking a new major sponsor for 2008. The Article Mark Hawthorn/RealFooty/14Sept07 Supporter Opinion For people that have decided on their vote If St Kilda Footy First receives enough proxy votes quickly, the Rod Butterss board will be forced to stand down and the new regime will be able to move into the boardroom quietly and get on with job, causing minimal damage. Also if you send in your signed proxy form and change your mind, you just have to send in a new one which will make the previous vote null and void. 'The Peanut' Swans fitness guru may follow Lyon to St Kilda The behind-the-scenes fitness expert who played a crucial role in getting Sydney to successive grand finals is set to take his secrets to another club. Dave Misson, one of the masterminds of the system that made Sydney's injury list the shortest in the league, is moving to Melbourne and may join forces with former Swans assistant and St Kilda coach Ross Lyon. Misson said yesterday there was a chance he could stay with the Swans in a sports science role, but he would probably opt to work at the coalface with a Melbourne-based club. Sydney born and raised, Misson worked with rugby league clubs and the Australian cricket team before becoming the Swans' elite performance director seven years ago. He had no background in Australian football, but in concert with club doctor Nathan Gibbs, a former rugby league player, and physiotherapist Matt Cameron, also a newcomer to AFL, devised an injury prevention system that significantly reduced the rate of soft tissue injuries, such as hamstring tears. In 2005, when Sydney won the premiership, the Swans used the least number of players of any team, allowing them to have a hardened, stable side. Backed by the club, they searched the globe to stay at the cutting edge and went to Italy in 2006 and again this year to study injury prevention procedures at soccer giant AC Milan, where soft tissue injuries have been cut by 90 per cent in the past few years. The medical and fitness staff convinced the coaches that more training was not better. Misson said the best example of the system's success was the fact that veteran forward Michael O'Loughlin had not missed a game for more than two years despite chronic tendonitis. The Article Jenny McAsey/TheAustralian/15Sept07 Against the odds There is election fever in the air, but not everyone is worried about the Kevin Rudd and John Howard battle. For many footy fans, the real political battle is taking shape out at Moorabbin where rebel group Footy First is trying to oust president Rod Butterss and the board. There has been so much speculation about the real political fight that Sportingbet Australia has calculated the probability of whether Butterss will continue in power. Sportingbet's Steve Fletcher believes plenty of factors will be taken into account when members vote on November 12. "Plenty of issues have been aired in the public forum and former club stalwarts and high profile supporters are seemingly tired of all the dirty laundry, poor results and long term injuries," Fletcher said. "With former coach Grant Thomas, we have all heard about the legal threats over the loan for the house at Toorak. I don't know of too many employers that lend their workers a million dollars for a house. If this is common place, where do I sign up? How did they miss the eight this year? Heads should roll for that and it looks like some will, most likely the biggest head of all." Sportingbet lists the Footy First ticket at $1.45 and the board at $2.60.
