"Foxtel will be wanting to buy exclusive AFL rights for five years to ensure that Seven doesn't start its own suite of pay-TV channels . . . using Foxtel infrastructure," said CCZ Equities analyst Roger Coleman.
Stokes foots the bill
. . . The Weekend Australian understands that the Seven-Ten team must satisfy the AFL Commission within 120 days that it can meet a series of scheduling commitments. The Seven-Ten team welded itself to these commitments by matching the deal put to the AFL by Nine's owner PBL in the days before Christmas. The deal was crafted by a small team of PBL executives with the knowledge that Seven and Ten would be forced to match it to secure the rights. As high-level sources revealed in The Australian on Thursday, Seven and Ten have committed to having Friday night games - traditionally the highest rating in the home and away season - shown live nationally. So even if the local teams are not playing in the two northern markets - Sydney and Brisbane - Seven and Ten must ensure they are available live. Seven and Ten refuse to confirm this commitment.

Seven/Ten bid prevails
Channels Seven and Ten will broadcast AFL matches from 2007 through 2011 after the AFL formally accepted their revised bid on Thursday afternoon. The Nine network in partnership with Foxtel had put forward a $780 million package on December 23 last year, but the Seven/Ten alliance exercised its right to match that offer thanks to a 'last rights' clause paid for during the last round of negotiations in 1997. Details of the breakdown of games between networks, finals allocations and coverage in the northern states is yet to be made public with the AFL set to hold discussions with the successful consortium in the coming weeks. It's understood however, that the networks have agreed that the AFL grand final coverage in the first year of the deal should be decided by the toss of a coin. The telecast of grand finals will alternate thereafter. The remaining finals matches in any given year will be split between the networks, four apiece.

Ten the key on AFL TV bid
A crucial meeting of Channel Ten's board today will decide whether to join with the Seven network in offering an extra $100 million to secure the prized AFL television broadcast rights. Speculation was strengthening last night that the Seven-Ten alliance would go ahead and match Channel Nine's $780 million offer to televise AFL matches from 2007 to 2011. The networks have until Friday to meet the AFL's 14-day deadline for the final bid. Having made an unsuccessful initial offer worth $600 million cash, Seven and Ten executives have unofficially agreed to put up the extra $20 million a year needed to match the lucrative offer from Nine's owner, the Packer-controlled Publishing and Broadcasting Limited.

Pike 'in the mix' for St Kilda job
Four-time premiership player Martin Pike is among a long list of candidates who have been interviewed for St Kilda's assistant coaching position. The Saints have spoken to 20 candidates, of whom 13 have been formally interviewed, including Pike, who exited the game this year after a four-club career as famous for off-field shenanigans as his knack for finding team success. St Kilda coach Grant Thomas confirmed that Pike was "in the mix" for the vacant assistant's position, with the Saints set to narrow the field from those 13 interviewees. Thomas said the Saints had cast a wide net in a bid to find the best candidate. AFL experience wasn't necessarily a qualification, he said.

Goose rues a missed opportunity
Matt Maguire finally allowed himself a sneak peek at St Kilda's last-quarter fade-out against Sydney this week and was forced to recollect his role in the dramatic turnaround. Maguire's much-publicised run-in with Barry Hall was already seared into his brain, but it was a last-quarter opportunity that had escaped his memory which provided the dramatic double-take. A crucial running shot on goal from 50m faded at the last moment for a point, just as the momentum was turning Sydney's way. "I watched over my tape for the first time this week," he said. "I went back and had a look at my game and I think it might have been 15 minutes to go in the last quarter, and we were still up by seven or eight points, and I kicked a point."

18,000 achieved!
The St Kilda Football Club has joined up 18,000 members pre Christmas for the first time ever. The Club set itself a goal to reach this milestone as we wanted to exceed the total membership figure of 2002 which was 17,696. This shows that the Club has come a long way in 3 seasons. This is a great start to achieving the ultimate goal in 2006 of 35,000 members.

Saints burning up the track
The Saints are sure to feel the heat next season, and they got an early taste yesterday with a summer training run at Brighton Grammar. As the mercury climbed, St Kilda players had the opportunity to show off some post-season work in the gym. Matt Maguire has clearly been hitting the weights, and the zinc cream, while opposition defenders will be delighted to learn Aaron Hamill has bulked up even more. He has also had a visit to the barber, avoiding the need for a headband such as the one used by Luke Ball.

$780m offer wins deal
The AFL yesterday secured the richest deal in Australian sports history when it accepted a $780 million five-year offer from Channel 9 to broadcast matches beyond 2006. Acceptance of the Nine offer has left a consortium containing Channels 7 and 10 until January 5 to match it or be left without football in 2007-11. Nine, in partnership with Foxtel and News Limited, publisher of the Herald Sun, got AFL commission approval yesterday. If its bid remains the preferred AFL option, it will broadcast four matches each week, leaving up to four games a week for Foxtel. It is believed between $80 million and $100 million of the $780 million deal is contra. FL chairman Ron Evans said the proposed contract with Nine's parent company, PBL, was 50 per cent higher than the current value.
