Fractured skull sidelines Saint
The seemingly cursed career of Justin Koschitzke has again been halted after scans yesterday confirmed he had fractured his skull in the sickening collision with Western Bulldog Daniel Giansiracusa. The ruckman, playing only his second game of the year after recovering from a corked thigh muscle, will miss at least the next six weeks, according to the club. Medical experts, however, have left a return date open, saying the recovery from fractures of that type were difficult to predict. Koschitzke, who was taken to hospital after the collision in the third quarter, will spend the next two days in hospital for observation, with the fracture sustained above the ear.

Port beat us 14-0 in ump blunders
St Kilda coach Grant Thomas yesterday claimed umpiring errors, verified by AFL director of umpiring Jeff Gieschen, had cost his team victory against Port Adelaide. Thomas said he used the routine meeting following the Round 4 Monday night game at AAMI Stadium to question the performance of umpires Scott McLaren, Stefan Grun and Michael Avon with Gieschen. "Jeff basically acknowledged that there were 14 significant errors in the game and 14 were against St Kilda and none against Port Adelaide and in a four-point ball game we just thought that was quite significant," Thomas said.

Gehrig the difference
If there's such a thing as a certainty in football it was the assumption the outcome of the St Kilda-Western Bulldogs game would come down to big men versus pace. And as the late Jack Dyer would have said, a good big man will always beat a faster runt. For big man, read Fraser Gehrig – a brooding hulk of a footballer with a ridiculous haircut that belies his brilliance. Gehrig is the strongest player on St Kilda's list and, according to teammate Andrew Thompson, also the fastest over 20m and 100m. When you add that to a body weighing more than 100kg you have a seriously big unit, virtually impossible to match-up on when his mind is on the job.

Saints' Koschitzke hope
St Kilda is hopeful its champion big man Justin Koschitzke has escaped serious injury following his frightening head clash with Bulldog Daniel Giansiracusa at Telstra Dome on Saturday. The Saints' much-needed 14-point win over the Bulldogs - which puts their season back on level terms after six rounds following the AFL's decision to reverse the drawn result against Fremantle last Sunday - was overshadowed by yet another setback for the gifted but fragile Koschitzke.

Saints outlast Dogs
St Kilda's dual Coleman Medalist Fraser Gehrig picked the perfect time to re-capture his best form as the Saints' controversial week ended with a much-needed win against the Western Bulldogs at Telstra Dome on Saturday. Gehrig's six match-winning goals were the difference between the two sides in a high-pressure but mistake-riddled match, which saw St Kilda's best player Justin Koschitzke suffer yet another serious injury after a third quarter clash with the Bulldogs' Daniel Giansiracusa. The sight of seeing Koschitzke carried from the field on a stretcher, following a six-minute delay, took the gloss off the Saints' 14.8 (92) to 12.6 (78) win - with the victory putting the Saints back on level terms at three wins and three losses after the club lost its two points for a draw against Fremantle last Sunday when the AFL overturned the result of that match on Wednesday following a timekeeping error.

Saints hold on for crucial win over Dogs
Gehrig kicked three first-half goals as the Saints looked to be on track for a comfortable win, before the lead was cut to just 10 points at three-quarter time as the Bulldogs fought back with a strong display in the third quarter. Gehrig kicked his fourth early in the third term, before a sickening head clash with nine minutes left in the quarter between Daniel Giansiracusa and Justin Koschitzke provided the catalyst for a Bulldogs resurgence. Koschitzke, who has missed 41 games in the past four years through injury, was knocked unconscious in a fair hit from Giansiracusa and stretchered off the field as the Bulldogs gained the ascendancy.

Saints win another controversial game
Fraser Gehrig kicked six goals and Nick Dal Santo had 34 possessions for the Saints, while ruckman Peter Street was superb for the 'Dogs. A nasty clash between St Kilda's Justin Koschitzke and Daniel Giansiracusa sparked nine minutes of madness midway through the third quarter. Koschitzke was stretchered off and there were several incidents in the following minutes as tempers flared. The Bulldogs trailled by 34 points in the second term, but closed to 10 points at three-quarter time. They closed to eight points late in the last quarter, before Robert Harvey kicked the sealer as he equalled the St Kilda games record with 323 appearances.
