Saints mourn Travis Payze
The St Kilda Football Club is mourning the passing of club stalwart, Travis Payze at the age of 60 after a long illness. St Kilda Football Club president, Rod Butterss said of the passing of Payze: "Travis has made a significant contribution to the club over 40 years in numerous roles - as a member of the club's 1966 premiership side, chairman of selectors, administrator, director and president. "Travis was passionate about the Saints and in particular in the development of the Saints' junior development squad which produced the likes of Burke, Loewe, Harvey and Lockett. Travis was a great club man and a friend to everyone at St Kilda and will be sorely missed. Our thoughts are with his family during this time."

Saint hero dies at 60
Travis Payze, a member of St Kilda's only premiership side in 1966, died yesterday after fighting prostate cancer for more than four years. Payze, who recently turned 60, was this year inducted into the Saints' Hall Of Fame before next year's official function in a tribute to his services to the club. Affectionately known as "Bongo", Payze was chairman of selectors and later president at St Kilda. It is 40 years ago this month that Payze came off the bench to play a part in St Kilda's epic one-point Grand Final victory over Collingwood in front of a manic crowd of 101,655 after kicking three goals on debut a fortnight earlier in the second semi-final against the Magpies.

Saints mourn loss of 'Bongo' Payze
. . . "As a club we'll sit down with the broader St Kilda community and have a good think about that because we want to remember him and acknowledge all of his great efforts," Butterss said. "He had significant influence on the club over many years, as a player, as an administrator and obviously as a president. He was a very big contributor over many, many years in a number of roles. He had a great sense of humour, he loved this club and he'll be very sorely missed. It's been a tough week for the club."

Vic fans starved of action
. . . It is the first time ever that four non-Victorian teams have filled the top four positions at the end of the home and away season, capping off years of domination by the six non-Victorian clubs. That means the only finals action that Victorian footy fans will see before this year's grand final will be next weekend's two elimination finals featuring St Kilda, Collingwood, Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs.

Injury Update
. . . St Kilda captain Luke Ball hyper-extended his knee and team-mate Raphael Clarke was collected by team-mate Brett Voss last night in the win over Brisbane, but a Saints spokesperson said they would be ready to play the Demons.

Grant Thomas: We can win the flag
. . . "It looks like we'll have a knockout final next week in Melbourne, so we've just got to win," Thomas said. "I think we've had a reasonable season to date and it's all upside from here. If we're prepared to take on the challenge I think we can make a significant play in the finals. The statistics say it's very difficult (from outside the top four), but Adelaide did it twice and it's a great chance for our group to draw a line in the sand and make a decision and do something really special. No one says you can't do it and there's so many things that can happen. You look at the adversity that Adelaide have put up with over the last two or three weeks with their injuries and they rebounded really well today."

Saints step up to defeat Lions
. . . It was the evergreen veteran Robert Harvey who continued to tick the Saints motor over throughout the night in amassing 21 possessions, ably supported by Nick Dal Santo (32), Luke Ball (29) and Leigh Montagna (20). Forgotten big man Barry Brooks took his turn in the limelight with three second term goals to set up the win.

Waiting game for Saints
St Kilda grabbed a spot in the top four with a 51-point smashing of Brisbane Lions at the Gabba last night, but the Saints are still highly likely to confront a knockout final next weekend in Melbourne. Barring a miracle win by 16th-placed Carlton in Sydney today, the Saints will be displaced by the Swans in fourth place, losing the right to the double chance. Even if Denis Pagan's team does upset Sydney, St Kilda would be in danger of being overrun by Collingwood. The Magpies are one win and 1.9 per cent behind the Saints with a chance to close out with a strong win over the Kangaroos today. The Saints picked up more than two percentage points with last night's win, coming from just behind the Magpies to scoot clear. Their most likely opponent in a Melbourne final next weekend is the Western Bulldogs.

Lions fall as Saints stand tall
. . . Initially it looked to be a strange tactic by Thomas, who is not known for his high opinion of ruckmen. But last night his tactic of employing Brooks, Fraser Gehrig, Nick Riewoldt and Koschitzke all inside the forward 50-metre zone actually worked quite well. Thomas has been seeking a different look for some weeks now, with Luke Ball and Nick Dal Santo starting in the back half as virtual quarterbacks, and Stephen Milne playing away from the goals. Even Gehrig worked out to half-forward, taking Mal Michael away from his comfort zone. Dal Santo looked out of place for a time, conceding three first-quarter goals to the Lions' cult figure, Justin Sherman, who ignited the parochial crowd with his maverick ways. But when Dal Santo moved into the midfield after half-time he had an enormous influence.

Bubbling Brooks
With an eye on the finals, St Kilda fine-tuned its preparations at the Gabba last night to claim valuable momentum and a decisive 51-point win. Needing a huge percentage booster to challenge for fourth spot, the Saints seemed headed for a big result when they cruised to a 34-point half-time lead. They steadily built on their lead and did what they had to do to round off the home-and-away season on a positive note. The only injury was Raphael Clarke suffering concussion after clashing with teammate Brett Voss in the third quarter. Luke Ball also suffered a scare when he landed awkwardly on his left knee, but he ran out the match well. There was plenty of good news as the Saints also unearthed a potential wildcard for the finals.

Saints boost percentage
St Kilda put forward its case for a top-four finishing position with an unspectacular but efficient 51-point win over the Brisbane Lions at the Gabba on Saturday night. With Adelaide having taken care of Melbourne earlier in the day, the victory vaulted the Saints into fourth spot - although they could yet be overtaken by Collingwood and Sydney, both of whom play on Sunday and entered the round with a percentage superior to that of Grant Thomas' side.

Sirengate cost us top-four
St Kilda coach Grant Thomas believes the players' recovery after a hectic last three rounds will be the key in approaching a likely 'knockout final' next weekend, and admitted the controversial finish in Launceston earlier this year might have cost the Saints a top-four finish and coveted double-chance. The Saints have had games in Perth, Melbourne and Brisbane - the latter in humid and slippery conditions - and Thomas is concerned about the possible effect on his players heading into the finals. "We have got to make sure we recover really well now and that is the key to next week," said Thomas , following the convincing win at the Gabba, but is looking for more improvement.

Saints too strong for Lions
St Kilda remained in contention for a top-four finish after defeating Brisbane by 51 points in the final round of the AFL minor premiership at the Gabba on Saturday night. The Saints won 16.12 (108) to 7.15 (57) to move into the four ahead of the completion of this weekend's round of matches. But they need Carlton to down Sydney and Collingwood to lose to the Kangaroos before they can confirm their final placing. Their victory over the Lions was built on a solid performance on goal with three players - Robert Harvey, Fraser Gehrig and Barry Brooks - kicking trebles. Stephen Milne was the remaining multiple goal kicker for the Saints with two for the match.

Deaths rock Saints
St Kilda is in mourning following the deaths of a 1966 premiership player and the daughter of the club's most decorated champion. Travis Payze's passing at 60 came at a time when Saints legend Ian Stewart was dealing with the death of his daughter, Amy, in a road accident.St Kilda president Rod Butterss said last night the club was shocked by the losses and aware triple Brownlow medallist Stewart would be "knocked for six" over his daughter's death. "The club will be behind him, lending all the support we can," Butterss said. "He was a wonderful, proud family man and we will be contacting him and wife Suzie when we return from Brisbane."

Saints have no time for sentiment
. . . For the Saints, Nick Dal Santo had 32 disposals while Robert Harvey, Barry Brooks and Fraser Gehrig had three goals each. Brisbane appeared to lift for Voss tonight, going toe to toe with the Saints to trail by just three points at the first break. But Harvey and Brooks bagged three goals each as the Saints kicked away 10.5 (65) to 4.7 (31) by halftime.

Dons give West his freedom
When St Kilda played the Western Bulldogs in round 21, the Saints sent Stephen Powell into the middle to play on Scott West. Powell does a good number in haranguing opponents; readers will recall his response to Adam Goodes when the Sydney onballer offered his hand as a friendly gesture before the preliminary final last year. Powell brushed his hand away and punched Goodes in the stomach. So in that game last week, Powell drove West into the ground with every tackle he could lay. He bent the rules to the maximum, conceded a few free kicks and made the Bulldogs' great ball magnet earn every piece of leather he could find. Rodney Eade thought it so unfair that he complained to the AFL umpiring department about it. But St Kilda won.

Hudghton ruled out late
St Kilda will tackle the Brisbane Lions at the Gabba on Saturday night without the services of Max Hudghton, with Jason Blake a late inclusion in place of the versatile defender. Hudghton rolled an ankle last week against the Western Bulldogs but was named in the side to make his 21st appearance of the season. However, he failed to train on Wednesday and will not take his place in the side. The inclusion of Blake, who has regularly been used in the ruck by coach Grant Thomas, leaves the Saints with an interesting dilemma. With 198cm Barry Brooks called up for his first game of 2006 and Michael Rix, Cain Ackland and Justin Kositchzke also selected, St Kilda could have as many as five ruckman to choose from.

Ian Stewart's heartache
Some of football's greatest names have rallied around legend Ian Stewart after the tragic death of his daughter. Amy Stewart, 25, died in hospital from injuries after her car hit a tree in country Victoria. Triple Brownlow medallist Stewart and his wife, Suzie, are shattered. The champion centreman's former clubmates from Richmond and St Kilda have banded together in support. Stewart's close friend and 1973 premiership teammate Rex Hunt said yesterday the death was a huge shock. "It's a tragic loss of a beautiful young lady," Hunt said. "It's just so sad that the greatest footballer I've seen has lost his most treasured possession."

The model pro
Lenny Hayes interview by Rohan Connolly
. . . "The way we played last Friday night was the best we played all year. We're getting guys like Aaron Hamill, who just epitomises what we're about. The first thing he did last Friday was to run over and put on a massive shepherd when he could have just peeled off to get a handball. That was just awesome, and that's what it's all about. We're in the finals, we're a massive chance. We're going to need to some good football and travel and beat a side interstate, but I've got no doubt on our day we can beat any side in the competition." And Hayes just wants, somehow, to be part of it, any way he can. "I try to help out (assistant coach) Mick McGuane on match days with the midfield guys, and sort of get in their ear during the week," Hayes said. "With 'Dal', 'Bally', Leigh Montagna, and Jason Gram going well, I'm just getting a lot of enjoyment watching those guys play good footy."

Saints happily walk away
As financially beneficial as playing in Tasmania might have been, St Kilda says it will improve its premiership chances by ditching the final year of its deal to play in Launceston . . . "We think we're going to make the finals for the next five or six years and any chance of doing that is enhanced by playing at Telstra Dome. We've put the '80s and '90s behind us, we've got a stable club and it's all about trying to win premierships." (St Kilda chief executive Archie Fraser said last night.)

No last hurrah
. . . The Saints, only three points ahead at the first break, kicked six goals to one in the second term to take control and a 34-point lead into the main break. Nick Dal Santo, Robert Harvey and Steven Baker provided the Saints with plenty of run and when they tired, Leigh Montagna, Luke Ball and Brendon Goddard picked up the slack. The record books will show that in 2006 Brisbane slumped to its worst result since winning the wooden spoon in 1998.

Brett says no inside running over Voss
Brett Voss has no idea if champion brother Michael will play his last game tonight, and believes the Brisbane Lions skipper doesn't know either. "It's hard to predict what he's going to do," said Brett, thankful he will share the potential swansong in opposition for St Kilda. "I think he's changed his mind 1000 times so you just leave it up to him and for everything to settle down at the end of the year and see if he actually misses it or is glad if it's all over. I don't think anyone else will know" . . . The last time the Saints won in Brisbane was in 1991 when Voss was a year from making his debut, Tony Lockett was in the goalsquare and the Gabba still had a dogtrack.

Saints set to take on Lions
The main factors that contributed to the Saints win over the Bulldogs related to self belief, the team effort of every player on the field, and the importance to make amends of the poor performance against the Dockers the previous week . . . In order to beat the Lions, the Saints will have to be accountable in the midfield, and across the ground. We are going to have our big four up forward, so is important to be able to use them wisely, and spread the load evenly.

Preview: Brisbane Lions v St Kilda
. . . You'd think it was 1997 they way Harvs has been patrolling the midfield in recent weeks. But, just as quickly as you've got to move on from humbling defeats like the one the Saints experienced a fortnight ago against Freo, the side put that Doggies triumph in the bag and now, with Brisbane completely decimated through injury and staring at a bottom-four finish, the Saints have a wonderful opportunity to get a little back at a ground that has been the scene of many painful losses. In fact, the last time the Saints won at the 'Gabba, Luke Ball was in grade one and 'Plugger' Lockett was the main man up forward for St Kilda. The year was 1991 and it was in fact the first time the two clubs ever met at the Brisbane ground.

Saints spring big surprise
. . . Brooks, who will have Cain Ackland, Michael Rix and Justin Koschitzke for company in the ruck, has not played at senior level since the Saints were beaten by Port Adelaide in Launceston last year, one of only two appearances in 2005. The former Tasmanian, taken in the 2001 national draft by Port Adelaide, played his other five games in 2003. He starred for Casey Scorpions at VFL level last week, dominating the hitouts, kicking two goals, taking 11 marks and racking up 23 possessions.

Saints throw Barry Brooks a lifeline
. . . Thomas said it is time for Brooks to prove to himself that he has the mental toughness to play at AFL level. "Hopefully he's starting to understand the level of mental toughness required to make an impact at this level," Thomas said. "And if he can do that and put all that together we've got no doubt he can be a very valuable senior AFL player . . . He's a very talented player but it just gives him another chance to show if he's got what it takes to play at the senior level," Thomas said last night. "He's always been able to mark it and he's always been able to kick it."
