Hayes hazy about knee injury
Lenny Hayes is living with the frustration of not definitively knowing how and when he injured his knee. The St Kilda star may have first hurt his knee a fortnight before the shock news broke that he would require a season-ending reconstruction. Asked if he knew when the injury occurred, Hayes said: "Not exactly. That's probably been the most frustrating thing about the whole thing." Hayes felt a "clunk" in his right knee when an opponent fell across him in the Round 7 loss to Geelong but kept playing. He played on the following week as well, managing 34 disposals

Hamill faces race for finals fitness
. . . After viewing scans of the knee yesterday, orthopedic surgeon Peter Wilson decided to operate and tidy up the joint after Hamill felt soreness last week when he returned to full training . . . Scans yesterday also confirmed that Hamill's teammate Raphael Clarke had a grade-one quad strain.

Friend and foe give Tarrant their support
The out-of-touch Chris Tarrant yesterday found support not only in a teammate, but the St Kilda player who held him goalless last Sunday. While Anthony Rocca insisted Tarrant was one of Collingwood's hardest workers, and a player who made those around him play well, Saints defender Max Hudghton praised his midfield teammates for helping him do his good job. Rocca, who was also well beaten by Matt Maguire, said none of himself, Tarrant or the scoreless Alan Didak deserved to take complete responsibility for the fact the high-scoring Magpies' goals had dried up in what he hoped would be only a short slump. Coach Mick Malthouse refused to "kill, slaughter, hang, poison or do a job" on Tarrant, who has not kicked a goal in three matches, after the 59-point loss.

Past players declare war over fund
Past VFL/AFL players have declared "war" on the league, claiming it has "fobbed off" their request for a $10 million fund to assist the medical needs of former players. The past players' group, the X-men, has promised it will take action to ensure past players are given their share of the AFL's incoming $780 million television rights deal. Using dramatic language in a bid to draw attention to what they say is "a growing crisis" among past players, the X-men will begin their campaign to get funds at a meeting tomorrow. Tiger great Dick Clay is among the 'iconic football names' involved in the push for funding the medical needs of past players.

Mindset the key to top four race
With the race for the top four now blown wide open, St Kilda coach Grant Thomas believes mental toughness will decide which teams earn the all-important "double chance" come finals time. Just one game now separates fourth-placed Collingwood from eighth-placed Richmond in the race for fourth spot with the other teams in contention being St Kilda, Sydney and the Western Bulldogs - with Adelaide, West Coast and Melbourne looking a safe bet to finish in the top three positions.

2005 reunion painful for Pies
Five minutes into the action at Telstra Dome yesterday, St Kilda was faced with what most the football world expected - an impassioned Collingwood desperate to atone for its drubbing by Richmond a week earlier . . . But five minutes was the only joy Collingwood would have as St Kilda produced the 2005 form that got the Saints to a preliminary final, at the same time reducing the Pies to a semblance of the ill-equipped rabble that finished last season in 15th place. After those initial three goals a desperate, committed St Kilda simply squeezed the life out of Collingwood.

St Kilda express on way
The army of Doubting Thomases won't be happy. The Saints are coming, already a win ahead of where they were at the same point last year. The Saints remain seventh (8-6), but are just one win behind fourth-placed Collingwood and with Essendon next up. They also have Aaron Hamill to return within a fortnight, plus access to a stylish youngster spotted in the No.73 guernsey for Casey Scorpions reserves in Preston yesterday. Get Hamill and Justin Koschitzke back and match-hardened and who knows where the Sainters might end up?

Good news aplenty at St Kilda
St Kilda coach Grant Thomas had plenty of reasons to smile on Sunday night and not just because of the Saints' magnificent ten goal demolition of Collingwood at a packed Telstra Dome. The Saints were not only bathing in the afterglow of their most impressive performance of the season to date - a win that leaves them within striking distance of the top four - but also the successful return of injury-plagued big man Justin Koschitzke in the VFL. Koschitzke successfully came through his first hit-out since fracturing his skull against the Bulldogs back in round six, as he played a half with the Casey Scorpions' reserve team.

Saints down struggling Pies
A sell-out crowd at Telstra Dome on Sunday witnessed St Kilda dispose of Collingwood 19.8 (122) to 9.9 (63) to secure its eighth win of the season and solidify a position in the top-eight. The match started amidst a finals-like atmosphere, and while the opening quarter lived up to that billing, the match itself ultimately did not as the Saints out-pressured and out-ran their black-and-white opponents. St Kilda received excellent service from midfield trio Brendon Goddard (26 touches), Nick Dal Santo (23 disposals) and Luke Ball (22 possessions), while Steven Baker did a superb job to blanket the dangerous Alan Didak. The Saints' defence has been a feature of their game for most of the season and this match was no different with Sam Fisher (22 touches), Matt Maguire (21 disposals) and Jason Gram (21 possessions) almost impassable and providing the foundation for many forward forays.

Break helps Saints
. . . Now, with a despondent Essendon next week (Telstra Dome) and Port Adelaide (Aurora) after that, St Kilda is just four points from fourth spot, with a decent injection of talent to come, namely `Kosi' and Aaron Hamill. Yesterday was probably their most complete performance of the season. A month after being dismantled by the Crows, they are menacing with and without the ball.

Do away with the break, says Thomas
. . . "I think the players are now in a position where they actually look forward to it . . . it breaks the season up well for them," Thomas said. "But personally, once you're in and at it, you like to keep going" . . . "We haven't gone into byes well, and we haven't come out of byes well in the four years that I've been coaching," he said. "This year we didn't go in too well, but we've come out of it very, very well with a better focus."

Pies go cold as Saints start surge Stephen Rielly/TheAge/10Jul06
"I don't know (when Kosi will return to AFL), I don't think there's a weekly figure I can put on it, I suppose it's when the club decide that he's played enough and he's match-fit and he's got his confidence back . . . But we've all seen what Kosi can do after having long periods of footy out, he came back last year and I think he had four or five BOG's, so who knows with Kosi?" Max Hudghton - saints.com.au
Mum put through wringer by Kosi
. . . St Kilda coach Grant Thomas watched the 23-year-old key-position player while sitting next to Koschitzke's mother and was impressed with what he saw. "He threw himself into it as we would expect, a little bit too much for our liking, but that's Kosi," Thomas told the pre-game lunch before the Saints played Collingwood at Telstra Dome yesterday. "He's just a very competitive person, and there were about three or four occasions in each quarter where we thought 'Oh no', but that's Kosi. He just threw himself into it as hard as he could. I was sitting next to Lorraine Koschitzke, his mum, and she just grabbed me on the thigh -- it was the thigh -- every time he went in hard on the footy. It's just tremendous to have him back playing a half."

Hudghton gets behind Tarrant
Saints backman Max Hudghton has joined Collingwood coach Mick Malthouse in defending much-maligned Pies forward Chris Tarrant despite keeping the spearhead to a minimal contribution on Sunday. In the Saints' 59-point defeat of the Magpies, Hudghton held Tarrant to a mere five disposals, three marks and only one behind, drawing observers to question the forward's three consecutive goalless outings in as many weeks. But, Hudghton said Tarrant's lacklustre performance against the Saints didn't deserve the criticism it had received, and that he thought it 'ridiculous' that the Magpies' work ethic was in contention. "Chris is a hard worker. He pushes up the ground, works you hard over, and obviously you try and run off him to get the footy, but I personally having played on him probably 10 times, I think he's a fantastic player," Hudghton said, at the club's recovery session at St Kilda Sea Baths on Monday morning.

Pies go cold as Saints start surge
It was little more than a month ago that Collingwood was the most free-scoring team in football. The Magpies were then third on the ladder and preparing to fly. They had lost only twice, to Adelaide and West Coast, who were then, as now, the two best teams in the competition. It was during this typically heady period for the black and whites that St Kilda lost for the fifth time in 10 games, a defeat by Melbourne that followed by days the season-long loss of midfielder Lenny Hayes and by four weeks the collision that still has Justin Koschitzke out of the Saints' line-up. It was being asked widely whether, after two preliminary-final defeats, St Kilda's time had come and gone and whether Collingwood had supplanted it as the strongest Victorian possibility for the premiership. For both teams, though, much has transpired since. One of the two is bristling like a heavyweight but for certain it is no longer Collingwood.
