Ross Lyon in late charge for Saints job
John Longmire's Swans colleague Ross Lyon is a shock late entry into the field for the St Kilda coaching job. The former Fitzroy and Brisbane player has spent the past three seasons in Sydney as an assistant to Paul Roos, a former Fitzroy teammate. Sydney Swans assistant John Longmire is the standout candidate to replace sacked Saints coach Grant Thomas. But St Kilda might have to fight Geelong for his services, with the Cats also believed to be considering Longmire to take over from Mark Thompson, should Thompson not survive the club review. A potential candidate is Collingwood assistant coach Guy McKenna. Collingwood chief executive Greg Swann confirmed St Kilda head-hunters had spoken to McKenna this week. "He has spoken to the head hunters . . . and obviously we've been through this with Dean Laidley before. We think it's a good thing that our assistants are being interviewed and put up as prospective senior coaches," Swann said. "We don't really want to see him go, but he is in as part of the group being interviewed and he could certainly do the job if they offered it to him."

 Chris Bond Western Bulldogs Assistant
|
Western Bulldogs assistant coach Chris Bond is on St Kilda's coaching hit-list. Bond will be interviewed, probably late this week, as the Saints set about finding a replacement for the sacked Grant Thomas. It is understood Bond will be interviewed by the Saints' selection sub-committee, chaired by former champion Ross Smith. Others, including Magpies' assistant Guy McKenna, have been approached by head-hunter Stride Management. Bond's stocks have been boosted by a public vote of confidence from former Australian coach and media commentator Garry Lyon. Also in Bond's favour is the fact Robert Walls, a member of the selection committee, is a strong fan of the Bulldogs' style.

Saints cut candidates down to four
The race for the St Kilda coaching job is down to four, leaving current assistant Matthew Rendell to explore his options elsewhere. Rendell, a close ally of former coach Grant Thomas, was overlooked yesterday when the Saints announced a short-list of John Longmire, Ross Lyon, Chris Bond and Guy McKenna. It means the highly rated Rendell will not be at Moorabbin next year. (Matt) Rendell could not be contacted last night, but sources close to the Saints indicated he had decided to leave the club. A loyal Rendell publicly praised Thomas at the Saints' best-and-fairest award on Tuesday night. "They are the best five years I've had in my football career," Rendell said of his association with Thomas at the emotion-charged function. The other St Kilda assistants -- Mick McGuane, Jason Cripps and Jason Mifsud -- are yet to learn their fates.
The Article Mark Stevens/HeraldSun/07Oct06
St Kilda assistant coach Matt Rendell, a deputy to Grant Thomas since 2002, is considering throwing his hat into the ring for the Saints' top job. Rendell, who is well liked by the Saints players and has extensive assistant coaching experience with Port Adelaide, Richmond and Melbourne, was last week weighing up whether it would be prudent to apply for the job or whether the stated criteria of the St Kilda board - that it would be seeking a coach with premiership experience - would preclude him from contention. Rendell was initially coy late last week when asked by The Sunday Age if he was looking at applying for the senior coaching job, but in the end said: "I prefer not to comment on that stuff at the moment." Adelaide assistant coach Don Pyke has rejected the chance to apply for the St Kilda coaching job. Pyke told the Stride Management Group, working with the Saints as consultants to find a coach to replace Grant Thomas, he wasn't interested. He had been a favourite to replace Thomas, along with Sydney assistant coach John Longmire. "So I guess that takes me off the table at this stage," said Pyke, who played 132 games for West Coast. McGuane aims for the top - New St Kilda assistant coach Mick McGuane is adamant he wants to become a senior AFL coach. The former Collingwood great joined the Saints on 1 February and while delighted to gain the opportunity to be an assistant under Grant Thomas, he ultimately wants to coach an AFL club in his own right. "It's my ambition - there's no doubt. I aim for the sky wherever I go and people said that I wouldn't get back into the (AFL) system, but I've never been one to give up," McGuane told afl.com.au. "I went out and coached in my own right and turned footy clubs around financially, to create a winning culture, because there is no doubt that I inherited two basket cases (Burnie in Tasmania and Gisborne in the Bendigo League) and the clubs knew that too.
