Indigenous AFL stars boost pride on Palm Island
It's hard to get kids to attend school on a Saturday morning. Particularly when the school is on Palm Island and the visiting attraction is a bunch of AFL stars. In a place where the NRL team the Cowboys are kings and Matt Bowen is a god, there wasn't much interest in kicking the footy around on a sticky north Queensland day. About a dozen young children straggled to the local sports oval to mix with their indigenous role models. Crowding around Carlton utility Cory McGrath, they smiled cheekily for photographs before vanishing into the mangroves. McGrath was joined on Palm Island by Melbourne's Matthew Whelan, Kangaroo Daniel Wells, Richmond's Richard Tambling, Brisbane's triple premiership star Chris Johnson and Port Adelaide's Shaun Burgoyne. The visit was part of the AFL Players Association's biennial indigenous players' camp, organised in the past to celebrate the high number of Aboriginal players in AFL ranks - about 8 per cent of the total number of players this season.

Saints plan B&F event to include supporters
. . . A fairly poor attendance by supporters on the (2006 B&F) evening was disappointing for the club. This was mainly due to the event being held on a weeknight, as well as many children having to return to school the next day after the school holidays, it was probably doomed financially from the start. Not to mention the disappointment of families and working people living in the country and interstate who would find it impossible to attend weekday functions. Nevertheless, the club seems keen to push forward on the idea of a Best & Fairest that is accessible to its supporters. "We are looking at the B&F being on a Friday or Saturday moving forward," Archie Fraser St Kilda's CEO said. "The only reason we were locked into a Tuesday was due to the historical booking at Crown, and as a result the players booked flights to leave the day after, so changing it even after we decided to go to Vodafone was too hard." "We all think it should be a supporter and corporate event and it should be on a weekend, so that is the plan for the future. One issue is the cost to put it on at 'Vodafone' compared to the 'Crown'." Archie said, "We are still working through this one. We are looking at booking a couple of dates for the B & F and utilising the second one a few days after the Grand Final."

Rock impressed by Lyon
New St Kilda assistant coach Anthony Rock is expecting a few 'cooks' from rookie senior coach Ross Lyon, but is thoroughly impressed with his attitude with pre-season training just a week away. "First impressions (of Lyon) are outstanding," Rock told afl.com.au. "He has got a real hard edge to him and is very honest and forthright, but at the same time I think I am really going to enjoy working with him. I am sure I will cop a few cooks and things like that along the way but nothing is ever personal and I am sure he is going to be great for this group." It is an exciting time all round at St Kilda at the moment according to Rock, and he has no doubt that Lyon is more than equipped to cope with the demands of being a senior AFL coach. "He is a young coach, 39, and I am sure it is an exciting time for him but he has been in the system for 11 or 12 years so he is primed and ready to go," he said.

Saints midfield Rock solid
New St Kilda assistant coach Anthony Rock has only been at the club for a fortnight, but the former Kangaroos premiership player is excited by the players' commitment during the off-season. Rock revealed to afl.com.au on Thursday that most of the squad has been into the club's gym for some fitness and strength work already, though he admits that the programs have been restricted to ensure that burnout doesn't occur. "I have been quite surprised with their work ethic actually. I have been here two weeks and a lot (of players) have filtered through the gym doing weights and on the bike which has been very impressive," Rock said, adding the pre-season training begins next week.

Moorabbin Redevelopment Update
There have been a few hiccups re the developments at Moorabbin and the St Kilda Football Club have been looking at alternatives. I am sure that negotiations between the club and the City of Kingston are in the sensitive category but Archie Fraser has been able to provide supporters with the information that Moorabbin is still definitely the club's first priority, "We have been working on this for over 4 years now and will continue to look at other options so that we are not left with nothing," Archie said. "We need a world class training facility ASAP for the club and we will do whatever it takes to deliver this sooner rather than later. We are expecting that they (City of Kingston) will meet before the end of this month to decide on the sale of the land which triggers everything else," Archie said that when this decision comes down there is still a lot of work to do to make the total project work at Moorabbin.

Saints support HIV/AIDS awareness through CARE
Recently a group of current and ex-AFL footballers were led around northern Vietnam on a CARE Challenge, visiting CARE projects and meeting local HIV/AIDS sufferers. As part of the CARE Challenge, the AFL players met and listened to the stories of Vietnamese women with HIV/AIDS before holding football clinics with some of the local children affected by HIV/AIDS. The culmination of the trip also saw a footy match played between the CARE AFL All Stars and the Hanoi Swans . . . After the game, the Australian Embassy hosted a reception for the Hanoi Swans and CARE Challengers with talks from CARE's Vietnam Country Director, Carol Sherman, Australian Ambassador Bill Tweddell, and several of the AFL boys: Craig Starcevich, Leigh Fisher and Clarke Keating . . . Edward McDonnell, Sam Gilbert, Phil Raymond, Dylan Pfitzner, Mark McGough from St Kilda were also on the trip.

Don't hold your breath over footy
Foxtel, the nation's biggest pay TV provider, and the Seven and Ten networks are deep into a game to see who can hold their breath underwater the longest. Underwater breath-holding is not an Olympic event, but this is a serious play over sports broadcasting rights that the three networks are competing for. A pay TV analyst has estimated that between $80 and $100 million dollars are at stake. That sounds like a lot of money, but maybe not in the context of the billions the networks deal in . . .

AFL chief jumps ship to soccer
. . . The now former chief operating officer of the AFL and new chief executive at Football Australia doesn't intend to blow it, declaring he plans to take the sport to the pinnacle. "That's the aim, to put it right up there as one of the pre-eminent codes, if not the pre-eminent code. I believe we are dealing with massive untapped potential," said Buckley, who has signed a four-year deal. "But it's not about setting deadlines as to when. It's about getting the fundamentals right and making sure the elite level game acts as an inspiration to the youth."

Allan Murray and the Unity Foundation
Since the delisting of Allan Murray some Saints supporters have been wondering whether he will still be involved in the Unity Foundation. Archie Fraser St Kilda's CEO said today that current listed players Xavier Clarke, 'Joey' Montagna and Troy Schwarze are all doing work with the foundation and will keep this work going. Archie said that as far as he is aware Allan will also remain involved with the Foundation. He said, "Allan will still be involved at Unity Foundation, as will Troy, X and Joey, and the club will still be working with them on the various programs, so I don't see any change in this, it will keep growing." The Unity Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation founded by Xavier Clarke and Allan Murray. It was set up to inspire Australians to reach their potential and develop a hunger to achieve their life long goals through the teachings of indigenous people.

Plapp heads home
Devils star Justin Plapp will return to the Coast at the end of this year to take charge of the region's emerging football talent in a new and expanded role with AFL Tasmania. As well as guiding and mentoring the underage talent Plapp will also coach potential Devils and Mariners players from the region as well as playing with the VFL Devils. In concert with newly appointed Devils head coach Daryn Cresswell, Plapp will structure a regional training program which will offer North-West players a long overdue opportunity to stay in the region and still play at VFL level. As well as identifying and developing talented players Plapp will also assist in the growth of participation in football throughout the region.
