I believe this is how most selectors go into each draft. They give the players a ranking and if the players are selected by other clubs ahead, the player is crossed off and the club then takes the next highest available player according to their ranking system.
In the long term we need another quality/sizable player who can hold down the full back position, possibly as importantly as we need midfielders in the short term!
HUDGHTON hasn't got too many more seasons left.
There are no guarantees on MAGUIRE'S (CHB) return.
GILBERT is too lightly built for the FB role.
WATTS is too slow for a FB.
and Sam FISHER is far more suited to playing the 3rd tall.
KOSI more suited to a forward role.
The big questions for the SAINTS recruiters are - do they believe they can pick up a quality Full Back at Selection 27 or later? This will allow them to use their best selections on midfielders. It is possibly worth the risk of hoping to pick up a Mitchell BROWN, James FRAWLEY, Mark AUSTIN, Tom COLLIER, Jarryd ALLEN, Alex SILVAGNI or a Paul COLBERT later in the draft.
There is some talk of an interest in CAMERON CLOKE; I gather we would be looking at CLOKE to play a key defensive role (doubtful quick fix). We would expect to get CLOKE as a late draft selection or pre-season pick up - this would allow the early draft picks to be used on midfielders.
The subjective question is who would you want from WCE -
GLASS or COUSINS?
It will be interesting to see what importance the club places on filling our key defensive positions against adding to our midfield. You would think that quality midfielders out weigh defenders - however it is best left to the considered the experts!

Draft - First Round
Carlton - B.Gibbs
99% sure they will take Gibbs, and should do he is the best player and will play 22 next year . . . will flirt with the idea of Luenberger or Hansen to fill holes but common sense will see them take the best player
Essendon - S.Gumbleton
Will snap up Gibbs if Carlton don't, but that is unlikely. Gumbleton and Hansen wil be a close call . . . both very good . . . Gumbleton is bigger, and has played senior footy, and can play both ends equally well. Hansen is a local boy which has appeal, is more a defender who can go forward (would replace Fletcher) . . . line ball decision . . . smokey at #2 would be ready to play midfielder Joel Selwood, to add impetus to a dud midfield.
Kangaroos - L.Hansen
Either Gumbleton or Hansen will suit them, they will not even look at any others . . . they need another Key back . . .
Brisbane - M.Thorpe
Thorpe, Selwood, Proud will be the boys in calculation here . . . future weakenesses in midfield and Key defense . . . all three are very appealing to the lions . . . could take Luenberger aswell . . . Reiwoldt would be a left field decision for future ammunition for persausion
Port Adelaide - James Sellar
There are a number of players Port will look at, and all have pros . . . midfielders Selwood and Proud are a chance, but with K.Cornes, Salopek, Burgoyne*2 not as likely as talls, Luenberger or Sellar . . . Tredrea, Brogan and Lade are 27/28ish and will need replacing in the not to distant future . . . Sellar has the fwd come ruckman appeal . . . and is a local
Hawthorn - M.Luenberger
Just lost Spider, and will be all over Luenberger, and be rapt if they get him at 6. If he is gone, Thorpe and Selwood will be looked at, Jetta as a darkhorse.
Geelong - D.Conners
They will take Thorpe if he gets to 7, but not likely to happen. After the first 6 . . . the next dozen you could throw a blanket on . . . Geelong have the first choice of this group . . . Selwood is perhaps the best (but geelong have a lot like him - solid ball winners) Proud is small, quick and tough but similar to Chapman and Ablett . . . Conners is the type of player they need, but might not turn out as good as a few others . . . Hislop is uncomprimising and would give them some balls, and again Jetta is a smokey for his pace . . . but they have Varcoe
Collingwood - J.Selwood
Would also take Thorpe if he slips through, but would be rapt with Selwood . . . an ageing Buckley and a sh*t midfield, he would be a good fit. Proud is a bit similar to Holland/Licuria/O'Bree.
St.Kilda - A.Proud
Will have a huge selection to pick from . . . will take any of the players above if they slip through, Selwood, Thorpe, Conners could possibly . . . Proud, Collard, Jetta, Hislop, Boak, Benjamin, O'Brien, Armatige will all be weighed up . . . Proud probably being the best, but may choose more pace . . . Reiwoldt and N.Brown would be thought of, but less likely to be selected with their first round pick . . .
Collingwood - J.Reiwoldt
A big risk at Top Ten . . . is not Nick, but if he turned out half as good would be worthy . . . got some runs on the board in the VFL this season and had a great championship . . . but there are concerns over whether he has what it takes to succeed in the AFL. They need a mobile fwd to support Rocca and Cloke after Taz left, and Jack is that, but do they waste a Top ten pick on a third fwd . . . and he may last until #28. I reckon Collingwood will want a tall in any case, N.Brown or McKenzie are other options . . . If they take a midfielder, Collard or Jetta (a bit similar to Neon Leon) may be included for pace . . . or if they do not take Selwood, Hislop could be a target for grunt.
Bulldogs - E.McKenzie
Need a Tall
Melbourne - T.Boak
Classy Midfielder
Richmond - C.Benjamin
Like pace
Adelaide - L.Jetta
Small crumbing fwd they need
Sydney - T.Hislop
They like tough around the ball typre players
WCE - C.Collard
Can only have so many midfielders, they need some flankers

Saints may march
. . . In an explosive interview with the Leader, Saints chief executive Archie Fraser said if the club decided to leave it was under no obligation to allow the community to access Moorabbin Reserve. "We could put a fence up tomorrow and we've got a lease of more than 30 years," he said. "And we won't be handing that lease back." Ending months of speculation about whether the Saints were considering a move from Moorabbin, Mr Fraser said: "The gloves are off, we are actively seeking other venues". The news follows a breakdown in negotiations between the club and the council about plans for a $16.5 m redevelopment of Moorabbin Reserve.

. . . Koschitzke's injury woes which restricted him to seven games this season have been well documented and the club will need him to get his body right in the off season. With the departure of Cain Ackland to Carlton via the pre-season draft, the bulk of the ruck duties will be shouldered by Koschitzke and troubled former Eagle Michael Gardiner. Neither are hardly reliable prospects, with Gardiner playing a meagre 18 games in the past three seasons for West Coast. Rewind the clock back to 2003 and the former No. 1 draft pick was regarded as one of the best tap ruckmen in the competition. But a series of injuries and off-field misdemeanours plagued his career and led to his eventual demise at West Coast. It is a big gamble by Lyon given Gardiner's past and whether the former Eagle has the right attitude to play consistent football at AFL standard remains to be seen.

Ross who?
Ross Lyon will be very much an unproven coach when he takes the reins of St Kilda in 2007, having snared the job after the Saints unceremoniously dumped Grant Thomas. But to some fans - well, to one in particular, anyway - the former Sydney and Carlton assistant coach (and Fitzroy player) is not only just unproven but until last month was also unknown. Ian "Molly" Meldrum, arguably St Kilda's most famous supporter, was in Egypt on a Channel Seven The Great Outdoors assignment 26 days ago when he got a call from a friend back in Melbourne to tell him of the appointment. "I said 'Ross who?' I've followed footy all my life and I can honestly say I had never heard of him," said Meldrum as he sipped Moet in the Emirates tent at Flemington on Saturday. "I'm sure he will do a great job and that the club knows exactly what it is doing, but I have to say I was stunned when I heard his name. Mind you, I couldn't believe it when they sacked Grant either, so for us Saints barrackers life sure is full of surprises."

Kosi raring to go
From his manager Pickering this morn on SEN. Body feels great, feels injury free for the first time in ages. head feels good (except for a couple times he got on the juice), had a long chat to Ross the Boss and is set for a big one . . . Also discussed the Saints coaching team and said it was a very strong outfit with plenty of premiership experience. Pickering re-iterated that Lyon will make an excellent senior coach and anyone who knows him will say the same thing. Excited for the club about SOS and the fact the Saints headhunted Rock.

Western Saints News Update
Some of the key issues to be discussed at the upcoming Western Saints AGM include the organisation of pre-match functions for two Perth games, ticket allocation to members and 'the teams' support at the functions. The Western Saints finished season 2006 on a high note with a record 1078 West Australians joining The St Kilda Football Club as members. With a new coach there is a renewed enthusiasm to see the side perform with greater expectation when they travel to Perth on May 25th and June 24th next year. Lew Mutch, Western Saints President is requesting members to provide suggestions so that the 2007 season will be the best ever. See Western Saints update for further details.

TV puts callers on hold
Several top football commentators have been left in limbo as Channels 10 and Seven continue to negotiate with pay TV operator Foxtel. The number of games Seven plans to telecast ranges from two to four, but depends on the network offloading games to another outlet. The Seven and Ten consortium paid $760 million for the AFL television rights for 2007-2011. But under the agreement they must telecast all eight games or allocate games to another broadcaster. Fox Footy was aligned to Channel 9's failed bid and went off the air the day after the AFL Grand Final. About 50 people were employed by Fox Footy but most left the City Rd, Southbank, station on Tuesday when their contracts expired. Only a handful have been retained to work for Foxtel.

Fox Sports takes inside rail on overflow rights
Fox Sports and its parent, Premier Media Group, may emerge as a game-breaker, taking the overflow AFL television rights if the protracted and troubled negotiations between Foxtel and the Seven and Ten networks fail . . . Seven and Ten's $780million deal commits them to run all games live, although a clause allows them to shift some to another broadcaster. The cost is beyond the means of SBS, which emerged as Seven's saviour when it broadcast the Ashes series from Britain last year. Sources suggest the production cost of carrying all the games free to air could run as high as an extra $11 million, a cost blowout neither Seven nor Ten would be happy to wear.

Voss to coach soon, if ever
If Michael Voss is going to coach, he says it will be within the next five years. Speaking ahead of his last senior match - to be played in the most unlikely setting of Croke Park, Dublin, tomorrow - the retired Lions champion said he would stay with his family in Queensland for at least another 12 months, but rated himself an "85 per cent chance" of pursuing a senior coaching job in the future.

Lions den hopes for no body blows
. . . (Jonathon) Brown is widely expected to replace Michael Voss as club captain and already has the public backing of Simon Black, one of his rivals. But before he contemplates filling the boots of one of the game's most celebrated leaders, Brown must attend to his own body and the physical frailties which have cut short his past two seasons. Brown's 2006 was cruelled by stress fractures in his lower back and his 2005 by osteitis pubis. Both are over-use injuries which football departments class as preventable.

Deluca turns back on AFL career
Carlton's restored ruck stocks were diminished again yesterday, with the retirement of Adrian Deluca. Deluca, 24, had a year of his contract to run and told the Blues he was quitting for personal and professional reasons. His retirement follows that of Barnaby French, and comes a week after Carlton announced it had enticed Cain Ackland to leave St Kilda and would take him with the No. 1 pick at next month's pre-season draft.

Bulldogs appoint Mifsud
The Western Bulldogs have appointed former St Kilda assistant Jason Mifsud as a development coach. Under the newly-created role, Mifsud will be responsible for the on and off field development of the Bulldogs' first, second and third year players and focus on the club's alignment with its VFL affiliate, Werribee. Mifsud's role will include the instigation of development programs in areas such as sports science in conjunction with Victoria University, and computer technology. Senior coach Rodney Eade said that with more than 10 years coaching experience, Mifsud will be a great asset to the Dogs.

Nurture not sack
. . . It will be a test of the wisdom of sacking coaches. St Kilda, which sacked Grant Thomas and appointed Ross Lyon, meets Melbourne at the MCG . . . Backroom pressure to sack coaches when things aren't to the board's liking ends many coaching careers - too early . . . Boards may say that the job of the coach is to win. It's an oversimplification. Certainly, a club should win, it's why any club exists. But when it doesn't win, incompetent coaching is only one possible reason . . . St Kilda chief executive Rod Butterss used the strange example of Sir Alex Ferguson, manager of Manchester United soccer club in England, in explaining the Thomas sacking. Thomas imitated Ferguson's notoriously autocratic style of management, Butterss argued. Ferguson was an odd example to choose - Manchester United, under his long-term leadership, is yet again sitting atop the English football premiership.

Project to help the homeless
The AFL Players' Association has joined forces with the AFL and the Victorian Government to launch a new project aimed at helping homeless youth in inner-suburban Melbourne. The $6 million initiative announced on Tuesday by Essendon's Mark Bolton, Richmond's Joel Bowden, AFL general manager of marketing and communications Colin McLeod and Victorian Housing Minister Candy Broad, will see a residential home constructed that will provide a base for several programs designed to improve the prospects of homeless youth in Victoria.

Foxtel sits and waits
Clinton Grybas, the face of the Fox Footy Channel for the past five years, last week went past his office next to Melbourne's Southbank to find all the FFC logos have been pulled down. Billy Cannon, the former St Kilda footballer who produced FFC's best show, the Monday night talkfest On The Couch, is trying life back at free-to-air television, at Channel 10. The reality is: the Fox Footy Channel is not coming back. Not at all. When AFL chief operating officer Ben Buckley released the 2007 AFL premiership draw last Wednesday, a critical question was: which television channels would take which games, in particular the new timeslot designed for television: Sunday twilight games? Buckley responded: there is no formula.

Fremantle jumper too close for comfort
An extreme jumper clash will force Fremantle to abandon their red-andwhite heritage guernsey next season because they will play Sydney in the round 14 themed weekend. In a move which has stunned the Dockers, the club has been scheduled by the AFL to play against a team that wears almost an identical uniform. Fremantle' s heritage uniform has red-and-white hooped socks, black shorts and a white jumper with three thin red Vs covering the chest. The jumper is based on the guernsey worn by the original Fremantle Football Club in 1885.

Footy iron man felled by a fang
Thirty years have passed since Ron Barassi's Merc hit a tree at Lismore and Brownlow medallist passenger Neil Roberts was seriously hurt. Incredibly, those injuries have been revisited thanks to a tooth. "He got an infection after some dental work," says son Michael Roberts, also a former St Kilda player, "and it got into his blood system and found its way down to the top of the artificial hip they put in after the Barassi accident. They had to take off the top of the hip. Had to split him in half right down the thigh. It was emergency surgery because he has a stent in an artery. He's home now but he needs six weeks' rehabilitation."

ABC TV in talks for new AFL rights
The ABC has emerged as a possible circuit-breaker in the tense negotiations over AFL television rights for the next five years. A spokesman for the national broadcaster confirmed that talks had been held with the networks Seven and Ten consortium, which holds the AFL rights until 2011, and "the door is not shut" on the possibility of the ABC's digital channel, ABC2, broadcasting live games. The spokesman said: "There have been ongoing discussions about various possible scenarios. Nothing substantive has emerged at this stage, but we don't shut the door to the possibility." News of the ABC's willingness to break the logjam over AFL rights will put pressure on payTV provider Foxtel. It is understood the negotiations, which have been active for six months, are at a critical stage.
