2007 AFL Phantom Draft No 3 - Anthony Rock new St Kilda Assistant coach - AFL employ drug testers

2006 Phantom Draft - No 3
'2007's' Phantom Draft
by '2007'
1. Carlton = B. Gibbs
Simply the best talent available. At this point in time, the Blues should not be worried about drafting particular positions, simply taking the best available.

2. Essendon = S. Gumbleton
With Fletcher and Lloyd both the around 30, they need KPP's. Gumbleton is the best available. Already have good ruck stocks (Ryder, Hille, Laycock)

3. Kangaroos = L. Hansen
Desperate for a CHF/CHB and Hansen can play either position with competence. Good ruck stocks with Hale, McIntosh, Moran

4. Brisbane = M. Thorp
Still a talented midfield with depth coming through. Need KPP's and Thorp is the next best available.

5. Port Adelaide = M. Leuenberger
Have plenty of pace around the ball, but with Lade 31 and only Brogan as depth, the Power would be crazy to pass up the next Dean Cox.

6. Hawthorn = J. Sellar
Can play ruck/KP and will provide the tall versatility the Hawks require. They already have a good onball brigade.

7. Geelong = L. Jetta
Cats are set for KPP's up forward, and they need pace around the ball. Jetta fits perfectly and is very skillful.

8. Collingwood = J. Riewoldt
The loss of Tarrant and the age of Rocca mean they need a key forward. Riewoldt will provide this. Will use their lower pick for a midfielder.

9. St Kilda = Joel Selwood
Tough, skillful footballer with a developed body who could step into the Saints side next year. Saints have a wealth of KPP's, so this one is logical.

10. Collingwood = C. Collard
Need some pace and class through the middle, and Collard will provide this. Pretty clear choice for the Pies.

11. Western Bulldogs = E. McKenzie
Plenty of skillful mids, so a KPP is the go. Especially a defender. McKenzie gets the nod.

12. Melbourne = A. Proud
The Dees drafted mids last year, so expect to see a KPP or two this year. However, with the quality of mids around this pick, they will have to take a smaller player, unless one of the Top 10 falls. Proud in the mould the Dees look for.

13. Richmond = B. Renouf
Believe they have key defence covered with Polak, and forwards are not an issue. Have no ruck depth however, and will pull a surprise pick.

14. Adelaide = T. Hislop
Need some midfielders to replace ageing stars, and Hislop is the best available. A local boy too.

15. Sydney = N. Brown
A huge gap in a couple of years when L. Barry leaves, and the same with Hall. Need some KPP's coming through and Brown will provide this.

16. West Coast = C. Benjamin
Will take the next best available despite needing a backup ruck which they will find later in the draft.

Anatomy of a Dynasty

In the 10 years between 1995 and 2004, the Lions made the finals 9 times, winning 3 premierships.

Before winning the flag for the 1st time in 2001 they participated in 10 finals as a club from 1995-2000, losing 2 preliminary finals.

In 1995 the Lions finished 8th, they were knocked out by Carlton in their 1st final, Carlton went onto win the premiership. The Lions played 1 final that year. Robert Walls was their coach, 95 was his last year at the Lions.

In 1996 the Lions coached by John Northey finished 3rd . They were eventually defeated by the Roos in the PF. The Kangas won it that year, the Lions played off in 3 finals.

In 1997 they finished 8th, we knocked them out in a QF. The Lions played in 1 final.

In 1998 finishing 16th the Lions won the wooden spoon. John Northey lasted 11 rounds, Roger Merritt took over as care taker until the end of the season.

Brisbane finished 4th in 1999, in Leigh Matthews first years as coach. They again lost the PF to the Kangas, who again went onto win the flag. They participated in 3 finals.

In 2000 the Lions finished 5th, they were defeated by Carlton in the SF, and played off in 2 finals for the year.

2001, 2002, & 2003 PREMIERS.

In 2004 finished 2nd. Lost to the Power. Played 3 finals.

That is pretty impressive, and while gathering the above info a few statistics caught my eye:

The Lions had 16 triple premiership players (TPP) from the 2001, 2002, & 2003 premierships. Out of the 16 TPP, 8 played finals in 1995. Lynch missed the year with CFS, but he played in 1996. Voss missed the finals in 1997 which took it back to 8 again. In 1999 Voss played finals again and so did Black, Keating and Power, this took the numbers up to 13 TPP playing finals in 1999. Then finally in 2000 J.Brown arrived, but Clarke Keating missed the 2000 season.

Also noting that Chris Scott, Brad Scott (who missed the 2000 season), Tim Notting, Daniel Bradshaw, and Beau McDonald are all duel premiership players, and all played finals in 2000, except for Brad Scott. Chris Scott played finals for the first time back in 1995 . . . (More . . . )

Anthony Rock pumped
Anthony Rock was interviewed on SEN Saturday morning and he stated that he is excited about working with the Saints under Ross Lyon. He said that he's really looking forward to working with the likes of Robert Harvey and learning from him and is excited to be working with Luke Ball and named other players. He said that the people at 'Melbourne FC' believe that he has a picture of Lenny Hayes on his bedroom wall at home; he admires him so much. He also mentioned that he has been offered a 3 year contract which he is pleased about as it provides him with some security. He sounded absolutely 'pumped'. Ed. Rock joins Saints
Melbourne will appoint a new assistant coach following the departure of Anthony Rock to fill a similar position with St Kilda. While the Saints have yet to confirm Rock's appointment - the club is in the process of hiring several new assistant coaches to work under new senior coach Ross Lyon - the Demons confirmed his departure on Friday evening.

Saints add Rock to coaching staff
St Kilda will announce on Monday that it has lured Demons' assistant and Roos premiership player Anthony Rock to its coaching staff headed by Ross Lyon. While Rock refused to confirm the move last night, it is understood he handed in his resignation to the Melbourne board yesterday.

Rock to Saints
. . . Anthony Rock yesterday became the first official addition to the new St Kilda match committee. The former Kangaroo rover quit his job at Melbourne to join the new team at Moorabbin, which is expected to soon swell in number with the likely additions of Stephen Silvagni, Pagan's former deputy Tony Elshaug and respected former Tiger Ashley Prescott. . . . "We've got two back, but I don't know about SOS (Stephen Silvagni). I think he might go to the Saints, maybe, under Ross Lyon. They're pretty good mates." Fevola said that while Carlton might be in desperate need of a ruckman, it would be too risky to overlook midfielder Bryce Gibbs as the first pick of next month's national draft.

Anderson ironing out tribunal bumps
Adrian Anderson suggested this week the generous 25 per cent discount on suspensions for players with a good record will be reassessed. Also that the five-year qualifying period will be extended to seven. Seven years is far more appropriate, of course, for such a big discount for good behaviour. The AFL football operations manager's two-year work in progress on all matters tribunal is coming together, albeit a little slower than Anderson would have us believe. He also is willing to reconsider the contentious in play/behind the play classification, another encouraging development.

Cook career on line
Fremantle veteran Troy Cook's AFL career is hanging by a thread after failing to receive a new contract offer, fuelling speculation he could have played his last game for the club. Cook met with coach Chris Connolly and general manager of football operations Robert Shaw on Tuesday and told the pair that he wanted to play on next year. It is understood he was told they could not guarantee he would keep his spot on the list. Cook was hoping for a two-year deal but is prepared to accept a oneyear incentive-based contract. Fremantle's trade week coups, former Collingwood star Chris Tarrant and ex-Essendon strong man Dean Solomon, mean positions in the best 22 and on the main list are at a premium. Cook's manager, Peter Gilkison, confirmed the future of the 30-yearold midfielder was up in the air.

FOR COUNTRY, OUTBACK & OVERSEAS READERS

You have probably read the articles regarding the new AFL radio broadcasting rights and all of the advantages that have been well documented, if not, follow the link at the end of this article.

The AFL giveth and the AFL taketh away

It looks like some country and overseas football followers will receive better radio coverage (generally) under the new deal and any voice contrary to a total win/win situation is not getting a hearing in metropolitan areas at the moment. Nevertheless some Saints supporters probably won't get their fair share of Saints broadcasts, as they have in the past.

For Sainters reading this, there is probably no problems for you because you have access to broadcasts through the internet (that's 'if' your phone connections are good enough to carry the data at the required speed!). My understanding of the new deal is that it will probably disadvantage some Saints supporters living outside populated areas and many specific outback areas, mainly on Saturday's where 3AW and TripleM get first picks of which matches they broadcast.

As the Saints are now highly rated and have a strong membership and supporter base, it is likely that the ABC (who have by far the biggest coverage throughout Australia and indeed the World) and SEN who are extending their coverage area, will probably miss some vital Saints matches when playing other highly rated teams for the next three years under these new contracts.

So a Sainter fisherman who is working off the south coast of Tasmania, a truckie Sainter on the road in North Western Australia, a supporter living on a island in the 'Pacific' or the hard core Sainter droving in outback Queensland will probably not as often as they have in last few years, be able to listen to Saints matches live. It is likely that in many more intances than previously, when they put up an arial to listen to the Saints broadcast on a Saturday afternoon, they will probably end up with a lower rated match instead.

In the 'darker years' when the Saints were well down the ladder and with a smaller supporter base the coverage of St Kilda matches was limited, but the ABC always did their best to broadcast a 'spread' of different teams' games as evenly as was practical, not just the highly rated ones, but one would assume that 3AW and TripleM will go for the higher rated matches (these are likely to include key St Kilda games), and these two commercial radio stations have limited coverage in remote areas and overseas on the 'wireless'. AFL CHALLENGE TROPHY
In the battle of who's there and who cares
Maybe it was the succession of streakers, maybe it was the fraying tempers, but no one was too disappointed when the final siren sounded prematurely to end the Geelong-Port Adelaide exhibition match at the Oval on Saturday. For the record, Geelong won by 21 points - 13.10 (88) to 10.7 (67) - but the match was more an exercise for coaching staff to run their eye over young players than an exhibition in the true sense of the word. Both sides fielded B-grade teams, mostly youngsters topped up with a handful of experienced players, and at $50 per ticket, the crowd stayed away, leaving the Oval less than half-full, with 12,129 spectators.
