Veteran Payments by Snakeman66
|
Club main lists must have a minimum of 38 players. You can also have 2 Veterans outisde the main list or they can be within the 38 players on the main list so potentially we could have 40 players (38 + 2 veterans).
In the past we have included veterans (this year Banger and Frankie) in the main list due to Salary cap limits with only 50% of their salary going towards that Salary cap. (If we had 3 veterans, 2 could be outside the main list but one would have to be on the main list and 1/3 or their salary would count towards the salary cap. To have more than two veterans, you would need to do your sums to see if this benefits you cap wise.
If Harves was on $300K and say Max $150k, $225K would not be included in cap. If we had a third veteran Thommo on $150K, 1/3 of their salaries would not be included ($200K).
I think both Max and Thommo(both over 30 and 10 years) would be eligible but only 1 would nominated as a veteran on my assumption that Harves is getting paid more that Max and Thommo.
We started this year with 38 players - 2 veterans (Harves/Frankie) within main list). Frankie and Powelly have retired with McG and Murray delisted which makes 34 plus Gardiner and Birss leaves us at 36 players.
Our Salary cap level/limit would determine if we are required to delist another player or not with the ability to have a veteran in or out of the main list.
Thats how I understand it anyway. The list rules can be found on the AFLPA internet site under the CBA (Collective Bargaining Agreement).

Rolling the Dice by rodgerfox
Although I certainly don't agree with the motives of the GT sacking, and believe he should have had one more year, I'm quite enjoying 'the breaking of the shackles' to be honest.
We've clearly rolled the dice by sacking an existing coach who was in some opinions, 1 or 2 injuries away from being a premiership coach.
But now that it's been done, I'm glad to see us 'rolling the dice' by recruiting Gardiner.
He's a deadbeat, and some of the things I've been told by a current Eagles star would astound you - but I don't mind.
If GT has left anything behind, it should be the groups ability to be mature and professional enough to not allow themselves to be led astray.
They aren't kids anymore - they can make their own decisions.
I found watching the footy quite a strain last year, and the body language of the players at times suggested they weren't overly enjoying it either.
Not sure what Rosco will bring to the table, but I'd love to see some 2004esque risk taking on the field this year. Similar to the risk taking that's going on off the field.
Thank you for your time.

. . . Thanks for your views Roger, whilst I haven't necessarily agreed with them you obviously consider matters before you post.
We are at the Saints "rolling the dice", but IMO it has been a calculated gamble.
I have never seen a more professional process in place in hiring a new coach. I believe we have set the standard for AFL process in the future.
Likewise the way our coach has addressed the most pressing need on our list in quick order deserves praise. Irrespective of what Gardiner has or has not done in the past, there is no doubting the lad can play football. To pick up a number one draft pick and one other handy player for a 40s + draft pick is good trading in anybody's terms.
Gardiner must know that he has been thrown an unexpected lifeline. If there is any continueing desire to play football at the top level left, he will pull out all stops this year. It is only a one year contract, so if he stuffs up, he can play at Casey and we wave him goodbye next October.
If you have read "The Point of It All", you will notice that the Saints have always been blighted by an amature approach within the club, and it has cost us in premierships.
Hopefully this is the dawn of a new era at Moorabbin, and a decade of success looms.

New look radio deal
For the first time all Victorian footy fans will be guaranteed radio coverage of their team's matches interstate under the AFL's new radio rights deal, announced on Thursday. The new deal - which covers the 2007-09 seasons - will also see the emergence of a new broadcaster in Melbourne's 24 hour all sports station - SEN 1116. The leading three broadcasters in the ABC, the Triple M Network and Melbourne's 3AW have also signed new three-year deals to maintain their long-running football coverage but all networks have had to pay significantly more for the privilege . . . Buckley said the biggest difference in the new radio agreement was the fact that every match of every team in the competition would now be broadcast by at least one radio station into that team's home city.

Meet the team behind the team
As players take a well earned break, staff at the Club continue to work through the off-season until Christmas. With the end of financial year fast approaching and new strategies and proposals to present, this time of year is a busy one for all involved at the Saints. "The footy landscape changes all the time, so we are currently looking at structures and how we can do things better at the Club", General Manager of Sales and Events, Russell Morris explains. The Sales and Marketing team is in the process of reviewing commercial and corporate partners and a large amount of planning goes into improving functions and events for season 2007. "We are doing a lot of preparation in relation to on-field branding and match day functions, and once the draw is announced, we will be able to further deliver more programs" Morris said.

New radio deals ensure greater coverage
. . . In essence, the carve-up gives all four stations access to Friday night games. Triple M and 3AW have the pick of Saturday afternoon and evening games and shared rights to the marquee 2pm Sunday games; a tier-one package. The ABC and SEN will call, at the direction of the AFL if necessary, the games on Saturdays that 3AW and Triple M choose not to broadcast and share between themselves the early and late Sunday fixtures; a second-tier package. All four stations have rights to the finals. This year there were 16 games played interstate involving Victorian teams that did not receive any radio coverage in Melbourne.

AFL waters down ABC's broadcasting role
The ABC will lose its current rotating right to broadcast the feature AFL match in Melbourne on Saturdays next season when there is more than one game scheduled in Victoria. The AFL announced yesterday that it had completed the radio rights deal for the next three years. Melbourne-based radio station SEN has been announced as a new AFL broadcaster, in addition to the two other existing stations. The ABC will now broadcast five AFL matches every weekend, including Friday nights and the new Sunday twilight games. ABC editor of radio sport, Peter Longman, says money was the deciding factor. "We couldn't compete financially with some of our commercial competitors," he said. "In the end I think we've got great value for money and we're still very much involved in AFL coverage both in Victoria and around Australia."

ON A LIGHTER NOTE
AFL chief puts climate change on the agenda
AFL boss Andy Demetriou today announced measures aimed at tackling climate change. "We are witnessing the early effects of this phenomenon." Demetriou told the bladder.com. "The seasonal patterns we have all grown used to are shifting. An example is Carlton no longer reaching the highs they had experienced historically. The traditional high pressure systems coaches were exposed to appear to have eased as well. And then there is the biggie, flooding" A contrary point of view was expressed to the bladder.com by Jock James, a member of 'bring back the VFL,' an organisation that strongly deny footy has changed and like it that way. " Demetriou is overreacting. Just look at this year. Collingwood got ahead of themselves then had their bubble burst. And if you need anymore proof nothing has changed, St Kilda sacked their coach after the season didn't they?"

SEN Announce Broadcast Rights
4.10pm today - SEN have officially announced that the station have secured the rights to broadcast AFL football live for the next three years. The rights will involve five home and Away games each week, Finals, NAB Cup and International Games. The Manager said that although they employ many commentators capable of calling the footy each week, they will be required to employ more football callers. The SEN contract will be for 132 games per year, and the broadcasts will include previews and reviews. It was stated that the NAB CUP will begin on approximately 20th February, 2007. The ABC will also be broadcasting five games but the other two commercial stations that have secured broadcast rights will be only broadcasting four games each per week. westofmoorabbin.com Ed.

AFL considers time limit on drug 'strikes'
The AFL and its players will soon sit down to decide whether players on "two strikes" under the league's illicit drug code can ever receive a clean slate during their AFL careers. The AFL Players Association will hold meetings late this month and in early November to establish its position on whether there should be a cut-off time on players who have one or two positive tests under the illicit drugs code. The illicit drugs code was established before the 2005 season, but it was implemented only for 2005 and 2006, and the code needs to be re-negotiated, or abolished, before the 2007 season - meaning it has to be in place by February next year, before the NAB Cup. It is understood that there is strong player support for the continuation of an illicit drugs policy - support that was enhanced by their successful court action to prevent The Age and other media from publishing the names of three players who had tested positive twice.

Move to axe Hall loophole
The contentious tribunal rule which enabled Sydney's Barry Hall to play in the 2005 grand final despite pleading guilty to a striking charge may be abandoned as the AFL considers scrapping its distinction between "behind play" and "in play" incidents . . . The move would simplify the task of the match review panel. It would also avoid a repeat of the Hall case, in which Sydney successfully targeted a loophole surrounding the behind-play distinction as a means of ensuring its star forward was available for last year's grand final.

Saints: up to five assistants - Hawks: take Frawley
Frawley, who has been weighing up whether to return to football full-time, will take up a part-time position to coach Hawthorn's tall defenders . . . St Kilda, meanwhile, could have up to six additions to its football department, including as many as five assistants to new senior coach Ross Lyon. The Saints have about 10 candidates for the positions, and, continuing the rigorous process by which Lyon won the senior job, are getting prospective assistants to do pyschological testing. Eagles centre of Fixture storm
West Coast are at the centre of a storm over AFL fixtures after protesting about their draw for next season, which has forced a delay in the announcement of the 2007 schedule. The Eagles reacted angrily after seeing a draft copy of their fixtures and learning they would play five away night games next year. Club chief executive Trevor Nisbett confirmed yesterday that he challenged the AFL's manager of major projects, Simon Gorr, "very strongly". The announcement of the fixtures was scheduled for today but was yesterday postponed at least until later in the week. AFL spokesman Patrick Keane said the Eagles' concerns were a factor, but not the only factor in the delay.

TV deal inches closer - Fixture released next week
The AFL fixture is not expected to be released until early next week as the long running stand-off relating to television coverage of the game for next season nears its conclusion. The draw was scheduled to be released this Thursday but AFL media manager Patrick Keane told Sportal, the broadcasters had asked the league to delay its release for "a few days" to enable it to solve several issues. Keane said the league agreed rather than release the draw and then be forced to alter the venue or times of some of its matches. The delay is due to the failure of Channels Seven and Ten, which secured the AFL television rights for 2007-11 after matching the Nine-Foxtel offer of $780 million, to come to an agreement with Foxtel over how many games will be shown on pay television.
The Article Paul Gough/Sportal/AFL/saints.com.au/18Oct06
AFL fixtures delayed for TV deal
. . . New computer software used by the AFL for the first time this year, which has been used successfully in the past by the American NFL, has given the league greater flexibility to make late changes . . . Keane said the AFL had no set deadline, but the intended release date was now "early to middle next week". The major reason for the delay is to give the Seven and Ten networks - which bought the television rights for the next five years for $780 million in January - more time to deal with pay TV operator Foxtel. The free-to-air networks have spent the past nine months trying to on-sell the rights for three or four of the eight matches per week.

AFL reviews low blows and high bumps
. . . The issue of low blows gained attention this season for two incidents, both involving Hawthorn midfielder Mitchell as the offended party. West Coast's Daniel Kerr and Essendon's Jason Johnson each served one-match suspensions for striking Mitchell in the groin, Kerr in round 14 and Johnson in round 20 . . . The topic expected to prompt the most debate is what constitutes a legal bump, particularly when it involves contact to the head of an opponent, or the opposing player has their head over the ball. AFL football operations manager Adrian Anderson has previously said the league might consider a zero tolerance policy for contact to the head when a player is effecting a bump, depending on the feedback it receives.

Foxtel back in AFL mix
Foxtel has reactivated its bid to telecast four AFL games a week from next year. The pay-TV channel is in discussion with the Ten network, which is also representing its broadcast partner for the next five years, the Seven network. It is believed the parties have set a 48-hour deadline for a resolution of the long-running issue. If the Foxtel bid is successful, it will show games Friday nights into New South Wales and Queensland, Saturday afternoon and night nationally, and the early and twilight game nationally on Sundays.

2007 Draw 'St Kilda Wish List'
It is believed that St Kilda has gone to great lengths to try and eliminate the disadvantages that the club has had to bear in the past. In the end I believe that we just want to share the disadvantaged situations equally with other Victorian teams and some common sense. Here is an outline of some Saints supporters wishes who contributed to the 'Wish List' thread on Saintsational Fan Forum. Ed.
Going to Subiaco and AAMI only once a year (Subi before R12)
Interstate games Saturday. or Sunday - for travelling practicalities
No twilight games - Sunday twilight's disadvantage families; interstate and country supporters
Minimal six day breaks (last year was outrageous)
The first and last H & A games should be in Melbourne
Playing a game in Melbourne on the Friday night in Round 22 (best for finals preparation)
As many Saturday afternoon games at Telstra Dome as possible
Play Fremantle in Victoria (preferably September 29 at MCG).
A least 4 games at MCG - Melbourne, Carlton, Richmond, Kangaroos, Hawthorn. - Not Essendon or Geelong
Home game versus Essendon (and Port Adelaide)
Play Carlton, Hawthorn, Kangaroos and Richmond twice
Not to play Victorian teams interstate (i.e. Hawthorn in York Park).
Play Geelong at Telstra Dome as a home game
Play Melbourne at Telstra Dome (at least once)
Play Carlton, Essendon, Hawthorn, Brisbane and North all twice
More day football for some
More night football for people with their own football commitments
Night blockbuster at Telstra Dome (Home game)
2007 Draw Wish List ??? 'The Peanut' et al/saintsational.com
Here is a post on another thread that goes into the draw a little deeper:
If the draw was fair . . . then over a 4 year period we should play 13 sides 6 times and the other 2 sides 5 times (13x6+2x5=88 games = 4 seasons). So on average over a 4 year period we should roughly play each side 3 times away and 3 times at home . . .
If the draw was fair . . . 'Enrico_Misso' saintsational.com
No place like dome for Saints
St Kilda has been scheduled to play 13 of its 22 games at Telstra Dome next year - the most by any club since the stadium opened - while Collingwood will play 15 games at the MCG. In its draft version of the draw, the AFL has made the Saints the night specialists, with 14 games under lights, including up to seven Friday nights and what is becoming a traditional Thursday night game at the start of the Easter weekend against the Brisbane Lions . . . The AFL has delayed the announcement of the draw - it was to be revealed tomorrow - as it tries to make some late changes to the draft version. AFL commercial operations manager Ben Buckley said he did not expect substantial changes.

Sports given strong betting hand
Sports bodies will be able to ban bookmakers operating on their contests under tougher controls contained in draft wagering legislation. The AFL, Cricket Australia, NRL, Australian Rugby Union and Professional Golfers' Association yesterday backed a Victorian Government move to allow them to demand a fee from Victorian-based bookmakers operating on their sports. Under the Sports Betting Bill, bookmakers would face heavy fines if they offer markets without approval.

Longmire stays put while Saints cleanout
John Longmire will remain with the Sydney Swans, passing up an opportunity to return to Victoria and assist Mark Thompson at Geelong . . . Meanwhile St Kilda yesterday completed a cleanout of its 2006 coaching staff, axing assistants Jason Cripps and Jason Mifsud. They follow head coach Grant Thomas and assistants Matthew Rendell and Mick McGuane, who have already departed.

Swans to make Manuka home for two away games
The Sydney Swans plan to capitalise on an increased presence in Canberra by pushing for a larger supporter base in the region. The Swans will play two home-and-away games in Canberra next season according to a draft 2007 draw the AFL released to its clubs this week. If there are no changes made before the AFL releases its final draw on Wednesday the Swans will act as the away team against both the Western Bulldogs and Melbourne at Manuka Oval next season.

Player market stagnant as trades slow to trickle
Given the events of last week, Chris Pelchen and Ricky Nixon make for strange bed-fellows. Yet, as fall-out continues over the least productive trade period on record, the Hawthorn personnel manager and leading player agent are in agreement that market reforms are needed to help footballers get from one club to another. The push for a limited form of free agency - one supported by both Nixon and Pelchen and being championed by the Players Association in award negotiations with the league - has gained momentum following a turgid trade period in which only nine players found new clubs. This year's trickle of trades continued a steady decline in player movement since 2000, when 34 separate trades were completed.
