Another 11 delistings
A further 11 AFL players have been delisted in the lead-up to the NAB AFL Draft, set to be held on Saturday 25 November . . . it has been a disappointing day for the Schwarze brothers, as Troy was also delisted by St Kilda earlier in the week . . . As expected, Geelong's Tom Lonergan, who lost a kidney after a collision against Melbourne at Skilled Stadium in round 21 this year, has been delisted, but the Cats are hopeful of redrafting him via the NAB AFL Rookie Draft in December.
Players delisted:

Brisbane Lions: Anthony Corrie
Carlton: Adrian Deluca (Retired)
Collingwood: Tristan Walker
Essendon: Aaron Henneman
Geelong: Tom Lonergan
Kangaroos: Brent LeCras, Joel Perry
and Benjamin Schwarze
Port Adelaide: Stuart Dew (Retired)
St Kilda: Troy Schwarze
Western Bulldogs: Michael West

Joel Perry Delisting '2007' et al saintsational.com

PHANTOM DRAFT by 'mad saint guy'
9 - Joel Selwood (Stk)
The Saints will be hoping that Proud is available but they'll still be happy to snare this smart, tough, consistent on-baller with pick 9. His (Selwood's) pace and lack of kicking penetration is a concern, but his superb reading of the play, leadership qualities and clean hands will see him picked early. St Kilda will have quick midfielders as the first priority but won't let a player of Selwood's caliber slip past them.

27 - Nathan Djerrkura (Stk)
After St Kilda went for a plodder with pick 9 a quick mid is a must with pick 27. Ideally they'll be hoping one of Boak, O'Keefe, Armitage or Benjamin slips otherwise they'll be happy to snap up this quick, skilled aggressive midfielder with their second selection. His height (176cm) is a bit of a concern but St Kilda can afford to have a couple of midgets in the side as long as they're quick and tough.
My Phantom Draft (First two rounds) 'mad saint guy' saintsational.com

Proud above Selwood
I feel Proud is going to go top 20 as a certainty. But a few things may drop him down the order. In many games lately he has disappeared for patches, this along with OP and bad draft camp results will hinder his chances. His height is borderline, but despite these deficiencys I still rate Proud as one of the best midfielders in this year's draft. People want St Kilda to get Selwood with our first pick, but I just feel that he is to similiar to what we already have. We need runners, who carry the ball and kick goals from 50. That is what we lacked last year and Selwoods kicking is not going to give you that. Proud has good goal-sense and a booming kick, he has some speed and will carry the ball. Draft camp does not mean much in terms of footballing ability and Proud has more speed than many other midfielders. I would expect top ten, but you never know with the draft, as a few players sliding and those weaknesses mentioned before may see a later pick claim him.

Sheldon opts for draft over Blues
Sam Sheldon, the son of triple premiership Carlton player Ken Sheldon, has nominated for Saturday's national draft, spurning a Carlton offer to recruit him under the father-son rule in a year's time. Keen to retain their third-round choice (pick 35) - the price paid for a father-son selection - for Saturday's rich draft, the Blues indicated to the 17-year-old that they wanted to take him as a father-son recruit in next year's draft. But having spoken to various clubs in the lead-up to the draft, Sheldon made a late decision to nominate for the 2006 draft in the hope of starting his AFL career 12 months earlier than Carlton proposed.

Stars await draft
After two years without having a player selected, the Bendigo Pioneers have up to six candidates in line to be taken at this Saturday's AFL National Draft. The list is headed by Joel Selwood, who is touted to be selected in the top 10, while Daniel Connors, Jarryn Geary, Dane Avery, Jonathon Lee and Grant Weeks are also in the mix to be picked up in what is said to be a draft with enormous depth. The last players to be taken at the National Draft directly from the Pioneers was in 2003 when Carlton selected Andrew Walker at pick two, while Colin Sylvia, who won the Neville Strauch Memorial club champion award that year, was picked up by Melbourne with selection three. However, last year, Travis Baird, who was taken by Brisbane at the 2004 rookie draft, was selected by the Western Bulldogs from the Lions at the National Draft.

AFL rejects Eagles request for Mature Rookie
The West Coast Eagles have today been informed that a request submitted to the AFL to include Brad Smith as a mature age player on the club rookie list has been rejected. "We are extremely disappointed that the AFL did not look favourably upon our submission," West Coast Eagles General Manager, Football Operations Steve Woodhouse said . . . Smith was drafted as a fourth round selection in the 2004 AFL National Draft (No.#57 overall).

Talented kids who didn't make cut
At a time when national unemployment is below 5 per cent and the mining boom has created more jobs than there are skilled people to fill them, there has never been a better time to be looking for work. But try telling this to 70 professional footballers who find themselves on the AFL scrap-heap a week before next Saturday's national draft. For the most part, they are not players either long in the tooth or short on experience. Excluding those who have willingly or forcibly retired (for the latter read Adelaide's Ben Hart, Richmond's Andrew Kellaway and Port Adelaide's Matthew Bishop), this year's archetype delisting is aged 22 and played 33 senior games. They are good players who would dominate any other level of competition. Some are sons of famous football fathers, others have built a cult following at their clubs. But whether for reasons of injury, form or team balance, they find themselves on the fringe in the worst possible year. If you are one of these players and not already training at another club, like Kent Kingsley at Richmond or Cain Ackland at Carlton, your chances of re-employment in the industry are negligible.

Roach holds no grudges
Tom Roach wasn't worried when his captain Kane Johnson jumped the gun and publicly farewelled both Roach and David Rodan at Richmond's best-and-fairest night on September 20. Tigers officials quickly tried to rectify the gaffe and said no decision had been made on their future. But the pair was officially delisted two weeks ago. Roach said coach Terry Wallace had told him on the day of the vote count that he would be delisted . . . Although Roach, son of champion Richmond full-forward Michael Roach, is no longer at Punt Rd, he hasn't give up hope of resurrecting his league career. He started training with St Kilda this week in the hope of being picked up in the pre-season draft. "I'm having a new crack at it down at St Kilda and hopefully they'll give me a chance and I'll see what happens," Roach said. "I had a chat to (new coach) Ross (Lyon) and he said, 'Just give it your best shot. There are no guarantees, but give it everything you've got', and that's what I'll be doing."

Uncovering the home truths of draft selection
AFL clubs have become so intent on recruiting players of impeccable standing that at least one has bravely gone where few human agencies ever dare - into the bedrooms of teenagers. "One coach said he got a really good sense of a player's character when he visited his family and got to have a look at the player's bedroom," Dr Chris Hickey, senior lecturer in education at Deakin University and co-author of a study into AFL professionalism, said. "Apparently, he could tell a lot about the boy by the way he kept his bedroom." Coaches and recruiters observed what work likely recruits did around the house, whether they did other work, how they spoke to their parents, how the parents themselves spoke and acted. They took into account socio-economic factors: suburbs, schools, family status. They interviewed junior coaches, teachers and principals.

Bigger fish to fry
Three mongrel dogs follow Nathan Djerrkura through a river outlet wriggling into the Arafura Sea. If they could calculate the danger of nearby crocodiles, they wouldn't be yapping so freely through the receding water . . . he runs off, 174 centimetres and getting smaller, dashing past a group of children spearing fish in the shallows of the clearest, bluest water anyone has ever seen. Arnhem Land is not so much a paradise lost as one found by very few. "People wonder why I get home sick," Djerrkura says . . . he's spent the past two years in a Melbourne boarding school, he is back home counting the days until the draft . . . Nathan's graduation from Scotch was a remarkable achievement. Head of sport Robert Smith called it the highlight of his 20-year career. "I know how much hard work and struggle he has gone through to get there" . . . Smith bonded with Nathan halfway through his first semester, when he was ready to chuck it in and go home, away from the loneliness and the bloody cold. Sensing despair, he took his student to a cafe and the pair talked about living and smelled coffee and felt Melbourne. Smith said he would support Nathan's next decision. It was an important latte; Nathan stayed and persisted and flourished. The Djerrkura family knew then Nathan was transformed. His mother Jenny was particularly moved. Cheeky and honest, she desperately wants her son to be drafted because she knows his sacrifices. She also knows footy and says her youngest boy can "break the lines".

The draft blows in
. . . Steven Sims (St Kilda) . . . "I got the biggest surprise of my life when St Kilda drafted me. I'd never spoken to anyone from there . . . I went over and trained twice with St Kilda, one time before Christmas and once after. The first time I could only stay overnight because I had to get home and play cricket. Plugger Lockett was down there then, and I can remember Trevor Bartlett (???) and Stewy Loewe; Stewy was one of the young guys. I actually arrived on the same day as Nicky Winmar. I trained that day and Nicky didn't; he ended up playing 200 games and I didn't play any. My head was spinning with it all. I didn't know what to do. I was talking to North Adelaide at the time, and Andrew and Darren Jarman were there. I grew up with those blokes, so they were a swaying influence. I wanted to play some footy with them. We won the flag in 1987, so that helped smooth things over, but I did watch the Saints and wonder if I could have made it. I knew a young guy who went over later, Steven Sziller, and I used to think I was no different to him. If kids like him got a game, I might have been a chance."

Saints look to draft for tall timber
. . . He (Lyon) admitted shaping the squad was difficult in such a short time-frame. "It hasn't been a perfect scenario and there are definitely some situations where I'd love to have some more time and started preparing from round 11, but the reality is I've come in on a short time-frame. I'm rapt to be here and I'm happy to deal with that problem, but it hasn't been perfect for everybody, but we're doing the best we can at this stage."

High hopes or tall order?
Matthew Leuenberger expected to finish his first senior game with more questions than answers, thinking more about what would come next. Instead, he stopped wondering. "I thought I held my own," the young ruckman said. "I felt a bit more calm after that. It felt like I could start to compare myself against other guys who had played senior footy at my age" . . . Leuenberger played six games for East Perth in the last part of last season and, by the end of them, had established himself at the very top end of a draft pool considered so promising clubs will happily pick up to six or seven players next Saturday. Everyone agrees: he is quick, and nimble. He's already 203 centimetres and so, in contrast with the likes of last year's No. 7 pick Paddy Ryder, clubs won't have to cross their fingers and hope he grows.

Not a happy Schwarze household
. . . In a miserable day for the Schwarze family, brothers Troy (St Kilda) and Ben (the Kangaroos) were cut by their clubs. It is understood that Troy had earlier been offered a new contract by the club when new coach Ross Lyon arrived at Moorabbin. The club said this week that it had wanted to have more flexibility late in the national draft, or in the pre-season draft, to recruit another ruckman after Cain Ackland said he would move to Carlton through the pre-season draft. Ben Schwarze joined Brent Le Cras and Joel Perry in being cut by the Kangaroos, who will now have six picks in the national draft.

The Saints delist Troy Schwarze
Recruited from Dingley/Prahan U18 in 1998, Schwarze made his debut for the Saints in 2000 and has played 71 games for the Club. "St Kilda has extended an invitation for Troy to continue training at the Club for pre-season, where he has been a good servant to the Club during the past 8 years" said General Manager, Football, Ken Sheldon. Schwarze's younger brother Ben made his AFL debut with the Kangaroos in 2006.

Saints on search for ruckman
New St Kilda coach Ross Lyon will use the AFL pre-season draft to attempt to fill the ruck position left vacant by Cain Ackland's departure to Carlton. Overseeing his first training session at the club today, Lyon admitted the loss had left the club under-manned, and he had attempted to convince Ackland not to move to Carlton via the pre-season draft. Utility Troy Schwarze was delisted this week to make room for another ruckman, although Lyon felt there were other options should the draft not present a solution. "We're just trying to get technically the best ruckman through the door," Lyon said.

Ackland departure a blow: Lyon
Former St Kilda ruckman Cain Ackland remained a required player by the Saints, according to new coach Ross Lyon, who attempted to persuade the new Carlton tall to remain at Moorabbin in 2007. Lyon confirmed on Wednesday at Moorabbin that he wanted Ackland to stay at the Saints, but added that St Kilda could not match the deal offered up by the Blues, which was a three-year deal. "I wanted to keep Cain. He was out of contract and the offer we put to him was obviously unacceptable and we revised that offer and I went around personally with (St Kilda football development manager) Tony Elshaug and spent two one-hour sessions with him and pitched and put our best offer on the table and he decided to go," Lyon said.

Waiting to be drafted !!
The next two weeks will be a very difficult time for many of the 150 or so who are hoping to be picked up in the National Draft. Only about 30-40 would be definates in the draft, with another 30+ not knowing whether they are going to get picked up until their name is read out. That still leaves anything up to 80 hopefuls whose dreams will be shattered on Draft Day. We all know that the lives of those who get picked up will change forever. Those who miss out will need to completely change the focus of their lives. Not an easy task . . .

Lyon seeks ruckman for Saints
. . . Lyon admitted the loss had left the club under-manned, saying they were desperate to boost their ruck stocks with midfielder Troy Schwarze being delisted this week to make room on the roster. The Saints are hoping to pick up a ready-made ruckman in the draft but Lyon said he was mindful of a back-up plan. "Clearly we've got (Michael) Rix, (Justin) Koschitzke really wants to ruck but wether we'll let him do that I don't know, then there's young Barry Brooks so the cupboards not bare," he said. "We're just trying to get technically the best ruckman through the door." The Saints' captaincy rotation policy is also under question and Lyon said he was yet to decide if he would appoint a permanent skipper.
