Carlton says Gibbs will be a Blueblood
Carlton has told Bryce Gibbs it will take him in the national draft with its No. 1 pick later this month and is preparing to offer the young South Australian superstar a long-term deal of three to four years . . . Not only did the Blues officials tell Gibbs he would be their first choice in the draft, they also signalled their intention to put forward a deal of at least three years - as they did with Murphy last year - in a bid to retain the talented youngster for as long as possible. Gibbs was the subject of much controversy over the season, given his father's long and impressive pedigree in the SANFL - a record that the Crows believed tied him to their club under the father-son rule.

Axed Gaspar aims for fresh start
Luckless Travis Gaspar is refusing to give up on his AFL dream despite being de-listed by West Coast yesterday and facing more surgery. Gaspar, 25, still hopes to be picked up by another AFL club in the national or pre-season draft. Barring that, he says he is prepared to try to play his way back into the AFL by performing for South Fremantle in the WAFL. Gaspar, 197cm, has had a seemingly endless run of injuries since making his debut for the Eagles in round eight of 2001, playing only 28 games in six seasons.

Rookie list players . . .
I have it on good authority that Sheldon and Lyon believe that you need to pick up at least one Rookie player a year who will end up playing at least 50 odd games for the club . . . this is an area where the club has been grossly deficient in . . .

Blues delist Davies
Carlton has finished trimming its list ahead of next month's NAB AFL National Draft with Justin Davies advised he would not be offered a playing contract for 2007 on Tuesday. Davies played 41 games for the club after making his debut in 2002, but his progress was severely hampered by a serious back injury this year and he joins Callum Chambers, Luke Livingston, Troy Longmuir, Cory McGrath, Ian Prendergast and Trent Sporn who were all delisted earlier in the month. Barnaby French - who announced his retirement during Carlton's final-round match this year - rounds out the primary list departures for the Blues, while second-year rookies Daniel Batson and Jesse Smith will not be retained. Defender Craig Flint was elevated to the senior list.

Ackland quits Saints for Blues
The vulnerability that new St Kilda coach Ross Lyon sought to address by recruiting ruckman Michael Gardiner a fortnight ago was reopened yesterday when Cain Ackland announced he was leaving the Saints for a three-year offer from Carlton. With Jason Blake still to agree to terms, Ackland's departure has left Lyon and St Kilda staring at a weaker, rather than stronger, ruck division next year and the likelihood of a need to rely on Gardiner, the notoriously unreliable character West Coast lost patience with. Gardiner is now the only experienced member of the St Kilda ruck corps. Michael Rix made his debut this year, Barry Brooks played only one match this year for a total of eight in four seasons and the cursed Justin Koschitzke is available at best for part-time service.

Rookies: Eagles / Saints
Personally I find it quite a stunning achievement by WC that they had 4 ex-rookies and one rookie in their premiership team . . . and that they had another 2 ex-rookies in Graham and Nikoski that played 24 and 12 games respectively . . . and who strongly contributed in their premiership year.
That is 7 players though the rookie system that helped them win the flag in 2006!!!! 2 of them All Australians.
Take all the ex-rookies and rookies off the Eagles 2006 list and it does not look anywhere near as strong. How cannot one see how WC have been smarter than the Saints????
Now for argument sake . . . take those 7 players and plug them into the Saints 2006 team. You would then find that our injuries would have been covered . . . our ruck weakness overcome . . . our midfield looking healthy . . . and Graham and full back filling in for the injured Maguire . . .
Does that make you think???

Ackland to join Blues
The Carlton Football Club has announced that Cain Ackland is set to join the Blues as the number one selection in this year's pre-season draft. "We are delighted that Cain has agreed to join the Carlton Football Club and subject to all the AFL approvals he will officially become a Carlton player following the pre-season draft in December," said Grant Williams General Manager Football Operations. Cain has played 41 games in his two seasons with St Kilda after previously having played 12 matches with Port Adelaide after being the number 27 selection in the 1999 National Draft.

Blues' Ackland coup stuns Saints
Carlton will boost its ruck stocks next season by signing out-of-contract St Kilda big man Cain Ackland. The Blues will use their No. 1 pick in the pre-season draft to secure the 24-year-old after offering him a lucrative three-year deal. While the Saints are yet to announce their delistings, Ackland was part of new coach Ross Lyon's future plans, despite the arrival of former Eagles ruckman Michael Gardiner during trade week. The Saints offered the 196cm Ackland an improved two-year deal in a bid to retain him, but he rejected the offer earlier this week.

Ackland en route to Blues
. . . Archie Fraser told Sportal on Thursday that Lyon had told Ackland he would be a major part of the club's plans for 2007. "Ross did a good job in trying to convince Cain to stay," Fraser said. "Ross told Cain he was a big part of our plans for 2007 and there would be plenty of opportunities for him and the chance to play finals football. All I can say is we are surprised and disappointed at his decision" . . . Fraser however insisted that the loss of Ackland would not leave the Saints short of ruckmen. "We still have Kosi and of course (boom recruit) Michael Gardiner (from West Coast) as well as Barry Brooks, Michael Rix and Jason Blake."

Everitt a perfect fit for Swans, says Hall
Barry Hall says his former St Kilda teammate Peter Everitt will have Sydney's celebrated internal code of conduct quickly impressed upon him and that the periodically recalcitrant ruckman would have no trouble fitting in with the Swans . . . The careers of Hall and Everitt share some parallels. St Kilda teammates until 2001, both had bad-boy reputations but went on to play their best football at their second football homes - Sydney and Hawthorn, respectively. While Everitt is 32, and heading into his 15th season, Hall envisages the ruckman producing his top game for some time yet.
