Saints deal Dockers a devastating defeat Fremantle was yesterday shattered by its gut-wrenching one-point loss to St Kilda, with Dockers coach Chris Connolly saying it was the most disappointing defeat in his time in charge. Errors from senior Fremantle players and a contentious umpiring decision with 37 seconds left delivered Aaron Hamill the match-winning point for St Kilda. Docker Matthew Carr was loping out of St Kilda's left forward pocket when he was run down by Hamill. Hamill got a hand on Carr's jumper and although Carr was able to shrug him off, the ball slipped from his grasp. Umpire Stuart Wenn deemed Carr had prior opportunity to dispose of the ball and awarded Hamill a free kick.

Gieschen backs Wenn AFL umpires' director Jeff Gieschen yesterday delivered a clear "we got it right" message as controversy raged about Sunday's last-minute free kick against Fremantle's Matthew Carr. Field umpire Stuart Wenn, who paid the free to St Kilda's Aaron Hamill in Launceston, has been given a tick because Carr was deemed to have had prior opportunity and was impeded by a legitimate tackle. Although Hamill had only a fleeting hold on the Docker, Gieschen said Carr had incorrectly disposed of the ball while in his opponent's clutches. Gieschen also confirmed that Wenn had originally called play-on, but then paid a free kick when he realised Carr had dropped the ball while trying to spin around Hamill.

Plenty of upside: Thomas St Kilda coach Grant Thomas believes his team is far from playing at its peak, despite the fact it pinched an incredible one-point victory over Fremantle at Aurora Stadium in Launceston on Sunday. Although Thomas said his side 'didn't play a lot of smart footy' against the Dockers, he was adamant that it could win from any situation. And in the low-scoring match, the Saints bounced back from a 15-point deficit at the eight-minute mark of the final quarter to snatch a memorable victory. "We've got a lot of guys that are below their best and we're nowhere near as ripe as we're going to be, so if we can just continue little by little, then that's how we'll do it," Thomas said.

Aiming for greatness If the St Kilda Football Club was a fleet of cars Robert Harvey would be a Rolls Royce. The evergreen of the Saints, Harvey had a stellar year in 2004. First he showed he still had it by winning the Michael Tuck Medal as best a field in the Wizard Cup triumph. His brilliance didn't cease there, missing just two games and averaging 22 disposals. In Round 19 against the Crows, the 33 year old amassed 37 touches and showed his on field class and ability, something that is admired and respected by all who have played the game.

St Kilda makes a late point A week ago, two teams walked on to a ground side-by-side in fraternal memorial. Yesterday in Launceston, two teams walked off the ground shoulder-to-shoulder and there was nothing brotherly about it. How these things start is always difficult to know. From the various television replays shown, it appeared as if push came to shove when St Kilda's Aaron Hamill and Fremantle's Graham Polak started grappling, Saint Max Hudghton joined the fray and Docker Matthew Carr came in to even the numbers. From there, an ugly mass-melee ensued with nearly every player on the ground entangled, along with umpires, trainers and team officials. Hamill turned his attention to Carr and Polak, somewhat bravely, clamped a headlock on the gargantuan Fraser Gehrig and tried to ride the G-Train along the boundary line with three team-mates in tow.

Saints steal one-point win St Kilda has conjured a get-out-of-jail effort to produce a thrilling come-from-behind win over Fremantle at Aurora Stadium on Sunday and continue the Dockers' poor record at Launceston. The Saints 8.11 (59) defeated the Dockers 8.10 (58). The lead changed eight times throughout the match and it wasn't until the Saints kicked two late goals through Troy Schwarze and Stephen Milne and a point was scored from Aaron Hamill that gave the Saints the vital edge. Fremantle looked set to break the shackles at Launceston and win its first home-and-away match from its four encounters, but the Dockers were unable to hold off the fast-finishing Saints.

Saints hang on in Tassie thriller St Kilda staved a fine comeback to beat Fremantle by one point in a thrilling round two AFL clash at Aurora Stadium today. Down by 15 points eight minutes into the last term and without a goal for over a quarter of football, the Saints kept peppering away and hit the front courtesy of an Aaron Hamill behind with 37 seconds left. The ball was deep in Fremantle's forward line when St Kilda won 8.11 (59) to 8.10 (58). A desperate defensive lunge from St Kilda backman Luke Penny was also just as crucial as Hamill's behind, as Penny was able to spoil Matthew Pavlich from marking on the last play of the day.

Saints lucky in Tas St Kilda has snatched a one-point win from Fremantle in a thrilling finish to a desperate, low-scoring battle in wet, windy conditions at Launceston's Aurora Stadium. The Dockers led by 15 points early in the final term - 8.9 to 6.6 - but the Saints stormed home with a 2.5 to 0.1 finish to claim an 8.11 (59) to 8.10 (58) victory. Well led by Peter Bell, Justin Longmuir and Paul Hasleby, Fremantle had enjoyed the lead for most of the match, but there was no denying St Kilda finished the stronger side, with Justin Koschitzke, Robert Harvey and Aaron Hamill setting the example after Lenny Hayes had shone earlier.

Fremantle go down at Aurora . . . Fremantle broke away as they lead St Kilda into the forth quarter. Out to a fifteen point lead they looked to seal the match when Fremantle veteran Shaun McManus lined up for goal. McManus missed and the game turned on its head. St Kilda started up and never looked back, while Fremantle stopped dead in its tracks. St Kilda clawed their way back to level the score with minutes to go and Fremantle struggled to fight on. McManus once again found himself with the ball inside the fifty when the scores were level but sorely missed, giving St Kilda control again. The Dockers midfield found a final burst of spirit and fought tirelessly to win the ball back and to get it back to the forward line with ten seconds remaining. Paul Medhurst received the ball and tried to penetrate it forward to a manned Pavlich, while Hedland, standing alone on the forty meter line could do nothing but watch as the ball was punched out of bounds and the game was out of reach. Justin Longmuir was one of the best for Fremantle, working tirelessly in the ruck for the entire match and Matthew Pavlich continued his strong work in the forward line. For the Saints Lenny Hayes and Aaron Hamill were voted the best.
