Alive and kicking(?)
. . . And what of St Kilda, the great white hope expected to challenge the established powers for this year's premiership? For the first time all year, Thomas was yesterday at a loss to explain what had just taken place. St Kilda knew what to expect from Port, yet was unprepared to match its intensity in the first half. With the exception of Lenny Hayes, the midfield was thoroughly thrashed. The most damning feature was not the amount of possession Port won, but the ease with which the Power was allowed to win it. Not even the sight of Ball leaving the ground with a bloodied face and wobbly legs whetted St Kilda's appetite for a stoush. The remonstrations against Shattock were as half-hearted as St Kilda's preparedness to stop Port Adelaide's run.

Thomas casts doubt on Saints
. . . Thomas said it was 'bad footy' that his side failed to capitalise on its shots at goal. "You need to take your chances and take your shots and kick the goals and we were never able to get any scoreboard pressure on them," Thomas said. "If we had scoreboard pressure on them in the last half, I've got no doubt in my mind that we would have run over the top of them - that's how the game looked to me. I don't know how it looked to you, but to the players and us, it looked as though they (Port Adelaide) were gone and they were looking for a way out and we gave them a way out and we didn't get enough scoreboard pressure on them, but it was too little too late."

Luke Ball bump
The man who wanted to ban the bump was backpeddling a little last night, and little wonder. Mark Williams reckons he never wanted the bump outlawed anyway; only certain types of bumps. And the one delivered by Williams' hard-running midfielder, Aaron Shattock, possibly had turned a game in Port Adelaide's favour. Shattock's front-on charge on Luke Ball 17 minutes in the first quarter of yesterday's game against St Kilda at Aurora Stadium left the hard-as-nails Ball prostrate on the ground for some time. More to the point, it ushered in a period when Port dominated the centre-bounce clearances and booted a string of goals that set up a 25-point victory. Ball returned in the second half, winning plaudits for his resilience from his coach. St Kilda rallied, but it was too late. The match review panel headed by Peter Schwab will determine whether Shattock's act was within the rules of the game. Williams was unapologetic. "I would be very happy to play clash/bash, attacking, hard football against every player on their side," he said. "I'd love to think I try and send that message out every week. Luke was in the wrong place in the wrong time, that's about all."

Saints stung by Port
Port Adelaide's recent dominance over St Kilda has continued at Aurora Stadium on Sunday with the Power holding off the Saints by 23 points. The Power 16.8 (104) defeated the Saints 11.15 (81) to keep their unblemished record at Launceston - four wins from four matches - intact. In 13 contests, Port Adelaide has won its past eight matches against St Kilda, with the Power not losing to the Saints since round 11, 2000. The win, set up with 13 goals to six in the first half, also keeps Port Adelaide's season alive after it notched up its fourth victory of the season. For the Saints, it was their fourth loss in five rounds. Shaun Burgoyne, Adam Kingsley and Chad Cornes were terrific for Port Adelaide, while Lenny Hayes was the standout for the Saints.

Port regains Powers at Aurora Stadium
. . . Warren Tredrea and Matthew Primus kicked three goals each for the Power and midfielders such as Shaun and Peter Burgoyne and Domenic Cassisi were high in the best players. Lenny Hayes led the Saints' revival in the second half and they trailled by only 17 points early in the last term before Port managed a steadying goal. The Saints' errant kicking late in the game hurt them - out of their last eight scoring shots, they could only manage 1.7. Port dominated the first quarter, kicking four of the first five goals and leading by as much as 31 points. St Kilda's early problems were compounded midway through the term when Power utility Aaron Shattock collected star midfielder Luke Ball off the ball at a centre bounce. The incident is certain to come under video scrutiny, although Ball returned after half time and helped generate the Saints' recovery.

Power stop the Saints
. . . Port was almost unrecognisable from the rabble that capitulated last week, building its lead to 40 points at half time and then 51 points with the first two goals of the third quarter. St Kilda could not take a trick, with Jason Gram stealing a handball midway through the second quarter and dishing off to full-forward Fraser Gehrig for a goal. But the goal was disallowed, Gram was amazingly penalised 50m and Stuart Dew goalled to make the lead 42 points instead of 30. A blowout loomed with Port's two early goals in the third, but the Saints lifted and stopped the Power's run through the midfield. The Saints kicked the next four goals to reduce the margin to 24 points at three-quarter time. They could have been a lot closer, but their last three scores of the term were behinds.

The two of us
. . . (Former cricket official Malcolm Gray:) "When he (Andrew Thompson) was about 23, we are not racing people, but (daughter) Sophie introduced me to him at derby day. She introduced this boy Andrew Thompson who'd she'd been out with a few times. He would have been about 23. He hadn't really cracked it back then - he had been down at St Kilda, out at Footscray, then back at Old Melburnians. That's one of his great attributes - his persistence and dedication and being extraordinarily focused. That's his approach to everything. I don't know, but I suspect that he would be one of the dedicated trainers down there. He just seemed to be a good young fella. You very carefully look at boyfriends and I thought he's a good, clean-cut looking young fella and his approach was terrific."
