Will we be out to win the Wizard Cup or has Grant Thomas got his beady eyes focussed firmly on the big one and save his squad for the home-and-away season games. I think most of the clubs aim to win the pre-season cup in this modern age of footy. Why play on second grade grounds when you can pick up momentum on better grounds in front of a crowd. It also puts another cup in the cupboard and a nice little sum in the back pocket before the season even starts, not to mention the extra memberships.
If what Thomo said last year after winning the Pre-season cup is to be taken seriously we should be on our way to the 'G' for the 'Big One' this year . . .

AFL levy to raise Broadbridge funds
AFL players will raise more than $160,000 this season from a tsunami fundraising levy to honour Melbourne's Troy Broadbridge. Each player will donate $20 per game to the levy under the AFL Players Association (AFLPA) initiative. The number will honour Broadbridge, who wore 20 while playing for the Demons. The AFLPA will decide at the end of the season where to donate the money, but a spokesman confirmed it would be used to help tsunami relief.

Team of 1946
Bob Wilkie - 117 Games 1940-1942 and 1945-1951. One of the great-unsung legends of the Saints! He is a legend at St Kilda for many reasons the first was the recruiting coupe where he helped influence the recruitment of Alan Killigrew back to the club as Coach. Few outside the club would understand the enormous contribution Bob Wilkie made to the club as a player, administrator, past player, coach, runner and passionate supporter. After his playing days Bob Wilkie stayed with the Saints firstly as a committeeman. In that role he influenced Killigrew's recruitment, then he took over the coaching of the Under 19s where he secured a premiership in 1957. In 1961 Bob Wilkie coached the Reserves to the premiership . . .

The St Kilda ruckman dared to believe he might have finally gagged that infuriating imaginary companion last year as St Kilda surged on its 10-match winning streak. Finally his body was letting him do what he had promised for so long - be the kind of mobile, multi-dimensional player coach Grant Thomas believed could blossom into the best ruckman in the country.

Kosi: Put cork in fan celebrations
Justin Koschitzke has called on the AFL to prevent fans running on to the ground should a forward kick their 100th goal in a finals match this year. St Kilda's Fraser Gehrig brought up his milestone in the preliminary final against Port Adelaide last season, causing fans to flood the field. In some circles, the time taken to clear the field was blamed for the Saints' eventual narrow loss, the side's momentum being checked after a white-hot start to the game. Koschitzke said that while tradition was paramount in football, it shouldn't be allowed to decide the result of cut-throat finals. "I think for an important game (it will change)," he said.

Man cons Saints supporters
A fraudster trading on the names of footballing legends Ted Whitten and Darrel Baldock has conned fans out of thousands of dollars. Police said about 600 members of the St Kilda and Western Bulldogs football clubs had taken up the man's bogus offer for bottles of "commemorative port".

Goose will be fully fit
The Saints are confident important defender Matt Maguire will be fully fit for Round 1 of the home-and-away season, according to assistant coach Nathan Burke. Maguire was one of the stars of the Saints' early-season surge last year before being struck down by osteitis pubis. He returned for the finals campaign, but was below his best. "He's back running at about 80 per cent and he's on track to play a couple of games before Round 1," Burke said. Burke said Leigh Fisher was also making good progress in his return from shoulder and hamstring injuries and was running at 90 per cent. First intra-club: Friday, February 11, Moorabbin, 6pm

Saint in awe of Molik
St Kilda full-forward Fraser Gehrig thought the AFL was professional until he witnessed close-up the dedication of Alicia Molik. Gehrig, who watched Molik's five singles matches from her courtside box, ended his Open adventure in awe of her attention to detail. "They're an individual sport and we're a bit different as a team, but it does make you realise the level they're on compared to us . . . they're a lot more professional," Gehrig said. Despite his admiration for her, Gehrig denied it was a case of love-all with Molik. "Don't be stupid . . . we're just friends," he said. Gehrig and Molik met two years ago . . .

The Saints head to East Gippsland
With less than a week to go before their annual AFL Community Camp, St Kilda Football Club is putting the final touches to an itinerary which will see the players and coaching staff in East Gippsland for 3 days, 1-3 February 2005. The AFL Community Camp is part of a national program that will see all 16 AFL Clubs in regional and remote communities across Australia, giving locals an opportunity to get close to football at the highest level. St Kilda's camp will involve activities such as AFL Auskick clinics, community visits and a Community Footy Forum for local sports club administrators, coaches, umpires, players and medical trainers.

Skipper named after Wizard Cup
St Kilda coach Grant Thomas says this year's club captaincy will not be announced until towards the end of the Wizard Home Loans Cup or until after that campaign. Thomas, who was speaking at Moorabbin on Monday afternoon, nominated Nick Riewoldt, Luke Ball, Nick Dal Santo, Justin Koschitzke and Max Hudghton as players in the mix to lead the Saints during the Wizard Cup/pre-season period. "We'll see how some of the players adapt during the (Wizard Cup) but that's been fairly consistent with what we've done in the past, so it'll probably be straight after the Wizard Cup," Thomas said.

Saint Nick charging towards the elite
Who is the best footballer running around in the AFL - and is he a Queenslander? By September, we should have a clearer picture - but former Southport player Nick Riewoldt is a legitimate contender. With Brisbane skipper Michael Voss still troubled by a knee injury, time catching up with Essendon's James Hird and Magpie skipper Nathan Buckey hampered by a dodgy hamstring, Riewoldt is putting valuable runs on the board.

Wizard to donate for super goals
Wizard Home Loans will donate $3000 to the World Vision Tsunami Appeal for every nine-point 'supergoal' booted in the first round of this year's Wizard Home Loans Cup. Wizard chairman Mark Bouris said he was now hoping that all AFL teams would score as many goals as possible, after 21 supergoals were booted in round one of the Wizard Cup last year. "We're hoping for at least 33 (nine-point goals) this year, so we can help raise another $100,000 for World Vision," Bouris said at the launch of the Wizard Cup at Telstra Dome. "Each time (Collingwood's) Anthony Rocca or (Essendon's) James Hird picks up the ball outside the 50-metre arc, we'll be encouraging them to go for the extra three points and in so doing, help raise an extra $3000 for World Vision's Tsunami Appeal."

Stewart Loewe: Member AFL tribunal
The AFL has finalised its sweeping changes to the tribunal and reporting process for 2005 and has named a number of well-credentialed former players to be members of the tribunal. Those named by the AFL on Monday as tribunal members include former North Melbourne captain and coach Wayne Schimmelbusch, former Carlton defender Michael Sexton, former St Kilda forward Stewart Loewe and former Geelong forward Barry Stoneham. Richard Loveridge and Emmett Dunne, former players who were members of the previous AFL tribunal, have been retained, meaning there is more than 1300 games of AFL experience on the tribunal in 2005. Three of the six members will sit on the panel at one hearing.

Saint silences doubt
Justin Koschitzke describes it as the little man constantly on his shoulder, always telling him to ease up or think of the consequences of his next action. "Don't back into that next pack if you know what is good for you," it whispers. Maybe even take the selfish option if it will protect your fragile body.
