Training Report 14th January
Very impressed by the efforts of Ackland and Brooks - working very hard on the track. Ackland looks a good type with his size and strength, Brooks is extremely skilled for a big man, his kicking is as good as any on the list. I think Brooks will develop into our #1 Ruck in years ahead (always the plan, went off track in 04, but is back on track) . . . Still very impressed by the efforts of BJ Goddard - if he doesn't take off this year it won't be for lack of effort . . .

X and Muzza All-Stars
Michael Long, as chair of the AFL Indigneous Foundation, told AFL web-site AFL.com.au that he is 'keen to see the cream of Australia's Indigenous talent uniting communities from around the country'. "The match will celebrate Indigenous players from the present and the past," Long said. "We look forward to seeing Indigenous communities from throughout Australia come together in Darwin for the match."

Nathan Burke Chat Transcript
bsk2002-Beekay: Which player do you think will surprise onlookers with their ability this year, like Brent Guerra did early last year?
Nathan Burke: I think possibly a guy like Sam Fisher who is training extremely well. I think he will play an important role this year and I think Aaron Fiora will surprise a few people as well.
mad-saint-guy: Has Fraser also bulked up? He looked like he'd done a bit of work on the biceps
Nathan Burke: Fraser has taken Barry Brooks under his wing and they train and lift weights together. I suppose because of that, the bi-product is he's also bulking up and doing well.

Training Report 7th January
Ed McDonnell, about 6'3" (191cm) pretty thin, dark hair (looks a lot like Luke Mullins). They played a mock practise game at training and the boy presented very well, got a number of touches and used the ball OK . . . Goose, Pfitzner (as usual), Kosi, Gram, Ball, Goddard (OP), Gehrig (Back), L.Fisher were in the injury group working hard - particularly BJ, who worked his arse off, he has stepped up this year and is showing exceptional leadership qualities . . .

Players to be tested for social drugs
The AFL will begin its new social drug-testing regime from the first pre-season game this year after reaching a compromise with players over when out-of-season testing could be conducted. Instead, players can be tested "when they are at training or on duty for their club" by the Australian Sports Drug Agency. AFL Players Association chief executive Brendon Gale said the policy found a balance between the health and safety of the players and their privacy and said he was not concerned about the possible negative perception towards players not being tested beyond the club environment.

Would the Saints smile this time?
The Saints are far from being competition beggars these days, but nor are they choosers. Hot off a third-placing in the 2004 premiership season - which came after the club won the pre-season premiership - St Kilda is in contention for ultimate success in 2005. But this does not make the prospect of March glory any less attractive. According to Saints coach Grant Thomas, his team is in it to win it. "We don't care what it is, when it is or where it is, we want to win" . . .

Melbourne mourns tragic loss
The Melbourne football club is mourning the tragic death of young defender, Troy Broadbridge, after his body has been found in the midst of the tsunamis disaster . . . (David Neitz:) "We've been hoping and praying that 'Broadie' would be found and be OK, but the miracle hasn't happened and it cuts really, really deep. It's tough to train and play alongside someone, get to know him, go to his wedding and send him off on a Christmas honeymoon and then have to accept that he's not coming back. It's very tough on the players and partners and this will be a very emotional time for us. But as difficult as it is we will support each other and get through this. That's what Troy would have done and we want to support Trisha."

Riewoldt looms likely
Nick Riewoldt is just a step away from assuming the St Kilda captaincy in 2005, after the brilliant young forward was named in the club's seven-man leadership group, from which this year's skipper will eventually be selected. The naming of Luke Ball, 2003 captain Aaron Hamill, 2004 skipper Lenny Hayes, Max Hudghton, Justin Koschitzke, Stephen Powell and raging favourite Riewoldt, officially reduces the field of candidates for the job to six. Hayes is ineligible after leading last season. While the club's unorthodox rotational captaincy policy allows for Hamill to be reappointed this year, it is highly unlikely to be the case.

Riewoldt Captain 2004 ???
. . . "It's something at some stage I'd definitely love to do, but . . . I guess it's just a matter of whether it's the right time." His manager Ricky Nixon shares the concern. "I emphasise this is a personal view, but I question whether he's quite ready just yet," Nixon said. "I think he's got some reservations, but that's not to say he wouldn't want the job."
