Query over Hamill's fitness
A question mark remains over Aaron Hamill's fitness after the St Kilda power forward failed to train with the senior group on Friday morning ahead of Saturday night's crunch match against the Lions at Telstra Dome. Hamill spent most of the 45-minute session working on his handling and short-kicking skills with assistant coach Terry Daniher, joining in only briefly with the main group to present a static target during handball drills. Addressing the media before the session, teammate Nick Riewoldt was hopeful that Hamill, who was 'rested' from the club's main session at Moorabbin of Wednesday, would be fit to take his place in Saturday's line-up.

If money talks, Lions are over line
Punters have stuck with the faith and backed Brisbane in tomorrow night's Round 6 AFL blockbuster. On Monday TAB Sportsbet decided on the rampaging Saints as favourites and put them up at $1.80 with the triple premiers $1.90. Punters decided the latter figure represented rare value and to a man and woman have been unanimous in their support for a side regarded by some as the best ever. As of 6pm yesterday TAB Sportsbet held $50,000 on the Lions and just $5000 on a St Kilda side unbeaten in its past nine games (Wizard Cup and home and away).

Resurrection of the Saints
Not so long ago an AFL basket case, it has taken more than priority draft picks to reinvent St Kilda. Caroline Wilson charts the decisions that turned around a club. It was in the spring of 1999 that the two close friends decided to take over their old football club. Grant Thomas reportedly delivered the decision to Rob Butterss, the former St Kilda reserves player-turned-IT multimillionaire, with typical frankness. He called Butterss and told him that he planned to move onto the Saints board as football director. "And you," he told Butterss, "will be president." The deal that could one day prove among the most significant in the club's history, took place in another telephone call at the start of the spring racing carnival between Thomas and then-club president Andrew Plympton.

Saint Nick has no regrets
Boom St Kilda colt Nick Riewoldt, the one who got away from the Brisbane Lions, says he does not regret the three flags that escaped him. Riewoldt's drafting by St Kilda for the 2001 season, soon after the AFL took away Brisbane's ability to recruit directly from his Gold Coast area, has known nothing except Lions premierships in his three full seasons in the competition. "I might have missed out on an opportunity to play for the Brisbane Lions in those years, but it's not worth really thinking about because I am with a fantastic group of people," said Riewoldt, who comes out of contract at the end of next season.

Saints still unproven: Matthews
Brisbane coach Leigh Matthews believes St Kilda has not yet earned the right to be regarded as the new number one challenger to the Lions' AFL crown. The Saints are the only unbeaten team after five rounds and also won the pre-season Wizard Home Loans Cup competition to suddenly leapfrog Collingwood and Port Adelaide as the team most likely to deny Brisbane a record-equalling fourth successive premiership this season. And their clash against the Lions at the Telstra Dome on Saturday night is the most eagerly awaited match of the season to date.

Lethal rejects Saints' wagon
Even though tonight's clash against the undefeated Saints at Telstra Dome has assumed blockbuster status, Matthews said this point of the season was the wrong time to be making big statements about any team. "It's too early for that," he said. "I'm not underestimating St Kilda, I'm just saying it's early days, really early days. "Basically we (the Lions) are three games ahead of the last team and St Kilda is four games ahead of the 16th-placed side. It's early days. It's Round 6, St Kilda are undefeated for eight months, so it makes them good opposition, no doubt about that."

Lions' clear present danger
Forget about the Brisbane Lions' flooding tactics, forget about intimidation, forget about the battle of the 'gorillas' in the goalsquare. Tonight's AFL's heavyweight championship at Telstra Dome between the champ (Brisbane) and challenger (St Kilda) will be won in the midfield. The team that controls the centre clearances and clearances from the stoppages will invariably generate enough scoring opportunities to claim victory in what shapes as the classic confrontation of the season so far.

Hungry Lions primed for kill
. . . The Lions beat up their opponents on the field, on the scoreboard and in their heads. They intimidate in a physical and mental sense. And now they have the new boys on the block to deal with. The Saints play quick-moving, skilful football and have shown they can handle physical pressure. The fast surface of Telstra Dome suits them; four of their five wins have been at the Dome, with the average winning margin seven goals. Tonight, fans can look forward to some intriguing personal battles . . .

Love to the power of 10 for Saints coach
The Saints aren't the top team in coach Grant Thomas' life - it's Team Thomas, the St Kilda mentor's 10-member family. Thomas and his wife of almost 20 years, Kerry, are the proud parents of eight children, and friends say the team is even more formidable than the rampaging top-of-the-table Saints. "We call ourselves Team Thomas - when we go anywhere now we have to take two cars so we all fit, and our friends all say when we arrive 'here comes Team Thomas'," Mrs Thomas said. A lifelong Saints supporter and former cheer squad member, Kerry met Grant when she was 17, and the couple have been together 22 years.

Sons of 'Bool add spice for locals
Allegiances will be tested at Warrnambool tonight, reports Martin Blake. They tend to linger in the bar at South Warrnambool Football Club of a Saturday night, and not just because the club is on top of the Hampden league ladder. When Brisbane Lions are on the television, there are always plenty of stragglers watching the feats of the club's most famous son, Jonathan Brown. Throw St Kilda into the equation, with Matthew "Goose" Maguire, make it a possible grand final preview, and pit the two Warrnambool boys directly against each other, and you know the place is going to be rocking tonight.
