Saints make it five straight
St Kilda has again confirmed its fast-growing reputation as the hottest AFL ticket in town, by keeping its unbeaten start to the 2004 season intact with an 11-goal mauling of the Kangaroos at Telstra Dome on Saturday. And befitting the Saints' new-found status as a power team of the AFL, the match was watched by a record home-and-away crowd of more than 38,000 between these two clubs. The Saints' 20.10 (130) to 8.17 (65) victory ensures they remain the only unbeaten team after five rounds, ahead of their biggest test of the season next week against reigning triple premiers Brisbane Lions at Telstra Dome.

Bring on Brisbane: Thomas
St Kilda coach Grant Thomas believes his unbeaten side is now capable of matching any opposition after he watched his much-improved unit destroy the Kangaroos by 11 goals at Telstra Dome on Saturday. And Thomas won't have to wait long to see if his side can match his prediction because next Saturday night the Saints face the reigning triple premiers Brisbane at Telstra Dome . . . And Thomas can hardly wait to see his side, which has won nine successive games in 2004 counting its unbeaten Wizard Cup run, go up against the Lions next week. "They are the best side in the competition and a side we have got a great amount of respect for," he said of the Lions. "(But) we are well-placed going in against anyone at the moment."

Saints march along on winning way
St Kilda continued its winning start to the AFL season here today with a 65-point win over the Kangaroos at Telstra Dome. The Saints made it five in a row and are the only unbeaten team, outclassing the 'Roos 20.10 (130) to 8.17 (65). Trent Knobel dominated the ruck and young onballer Luke Ball was also outstanding for St Kilda, while full-forward Fraser Gehrig kicked four goals. Kangaroos captain Adam Simpson worked hard through the midfield and team-mate Daniel Harris did well off the bench . . . A crowd of 38,896 watched the game, a regular-season record for matches between these two clubs.

Bright future spied for St Kilda
Asked after the match if the Saints were premiership material, Laidley said: "Yes, yes." Naming the likes of Lenny Hayes, Luke Ball, Nick Dal Santo, Leigh Fisher, Brendon Goddard, Matt Maguire, Nick Riewoldt, Justin Koschitzke and Xavier Clarke, the Roos' coach praised the way the Saints had gone about building their star-studded side . . . Thomas said: "We still focus on causes and they are just outcomes and we box them away and that's good that we have won those games but we have a tough game coming up this week and we have a tough month coming up ahead of us and that is how it is, there are no easy games." The coach believed the Saints were in a good position to take on the Lions, or any other team . . . The Saints should be bolstered for the match by the return of key defender Luke Penny, who missed yesterday's match because of a fractured cheekbone.

Slick Saints flag intentions
. . . Grant Thomas is trying hard to keep the lid on expectations, but the Saints have so much depth that it's scarcely feasible that they could miss the finals. Some clubs don't like talking about the F word so early in the season - but for St Kilda the F word should not be finals, but flag. They are real-deal contenders.

Ben Allen praises Saints recruitment
Allen said I don't know the name of their recruitment guy, but said he sure knows how to pick players that others recruiters overlooked....eg Dal Santo, Maguire. He also commented on how smart they were at targetting proven players like Gerhig, Black, Hammil, Powell, Penny & Guerra. He said the Saints picking up of young stars in the draft over the years and using trades successfully wasn't just luck, as some critics would have you believe....it shows an administration that's shrewdly thought out what it had to do and was prepared to give their coaching team time to let it all settle into place.

Butterss calls for overhaul
St Kilda's Rod Butterss today called for an overhaul of the AFL tribunal as he defended his club in its collusion investigation. The AFL will decide next week whether to take action against the Saints and Richmond, after allegations the two clubs colluded before Saint Aaron Hamill's appeals hearing last week. Hamill's one-match suspension for tripping Richmond defender Ty Zantuck was upheld. "We have every faith in the AFL administration and its processes," Butterss said before today's game against the Kangaroos at Telstra Dome. "We have no more colluded than flown to the moon and we are confident the inquiry will absolve us in this regard." Butterss said while the AFL was fully-professional, the tribunal process needed to be changed.

Two umps or not two umps . . .
For the second consecutive game at the Gabba, a goal umpire has had to reverse his decision from a goal to a point after consultation with the field umpires when it became apparent that the ball had travelled on the wrong side of the goalpost. Television replays on the big screens at the ground confirmed the original error. Brisbane Lion Jonathan Brown fired the ball from close range in the third term and thought he had brought up his first goal of the night during his brilliant display against Hawthorn where he pulled down 17 marks and eventually ended up with 1.5 off the boot . . .

Why Gehrig was always going to be a gun
Just over a decade ago, Fraser Gehrig and Mark Smyth were two country teenage mates bonded by football and irresistibly drawn to the dazzling prospect of an AFL career . . . They were typically boisterous and mischievous, displaying their mateship by poking fun at each other . . . Then, suddenly, it was all over. Gehrig received the most shattering call of his life in July 2001, telling him that his close mate had been diagnosed with a brain tumour . . . "Fraser was devastated but he seemed to cope pretty well," Fran (Mother) said. "He probably hides a lot of emotion. He doesn't say a lot around us. He's fairly quiet, although they tell me when he's out partying he's quite different." . . . As a footballer, Gehrig, 28, has never been inclined to put his inner feelings on public display. He hates talking about himself and treats reporters as lepers. Even when he kicked a career-high of nine goals, against the Kangaroos last year, he kept his distance from the media . . . This strength of character has seen Gehrig through many difficult phases in his career. Now it's being called upon to play a crucial part in the rebuilding of a failed club. The football world awaits the result with breathless anticipation.

Footy's strongest man
. . . When the great Daley Thompson visited Moorabbin earlier this month, the two-time Olympic decathlon champion challenged Gehrig to what St Kilda coach Grant Thomas dubbed a "strength off", a vigorously contested bench-pressing duel. Our image of Gehrig is of the laconic lad who prefers lifting six-ounce glasses of beer to 100-kilogram weights, yet when the pressing was done, the Olympian found himself in a dead heat. "He just challenged him to do a bench-press and it was a very honourable draw," said Thomas. "I think they got up to about 170 (kilograms) each. That's a couple of players, isn't it?" . . .

Plane sailing
When we fly to Adelaide, the competition starts early. As soon as we arrive at the terminal and board the plane, there is always a rush for the more spacious exit-row seats. Thankfully for myself, these are reserved for the taller key position players and the added leg room makes the flight seem a lot shorter. The team trained as usual on Friday morning - we always train the day before we play - before heading off to the airport for the afternoon flight. On arrival, you are guaranteed to find a number of supporters wishing you luck the moment you step off the plane. I still find this astonishing.
