Koschitzke fails to train
St Kilda utility Justin Koschitzke failed to train at Moorabbin on Friday, but is expected to take his place in the Saints line-up against Fremantle at Telstra Dome on Saturday night. Unlike Koschitzke, key defender Matt Maguire, who's been sidelined since round 15 by a case of ostietis pubis, did manage to complete training and appears set to take his place against the Dockers as selected. A St Kilda spokesman said there was no doubt that Koschitzke, who made his return to senior action against the Lions in Brisbane last week after dislocating an elbow against Hawthorn in round 13, would be fit for Saturday night's clash.

Walls tips a bucket on 'selfish' Dockers
"Fremantle's season has been a disappointment," Walls said. "They've got too many dime-a-dozen midfielders who are more interested in how many possessions they are going to get. But as a coach it's a damn sight easier to find a midfielder than a full-back, centre half-back or full-forward. They are clones who all get their 25 touches a week taking the ball backwards and sidewards. But they're not going to go very far if they're going to just play ring-a-ring-a-rosy with a pack of midgets" . . . Walls said Fremantle had fallen behind the development of West Coast and targeted several Dockers, who he said had played well below their potential this season. Matthew Pavlich was nowhere near the match-winner he could be. Jeff Farmer had lost his magic and self-control and become something of a tragic figure, while Des Headland's fitness looked underdone and he was coasting.

Maguire, Milne return
The St Kilda selectors have made two changes for Saturday night's final round match against Fremantle at Telstra Dome. Matt Maguire returns for his first match since the round 15 clash against Melbourne after having overcome a bout of osteitis pubis, while Stephen Milne has been named in a forward pocket.

Freo aims to be all white on the night
. . . Fremantle is hoping it will be all white on the night with its adoption of a one-off away strip for the game. In a must-win stab at staying in the eight, the Dockers will line up in a strip featuring mostly white and a single purple anchor. The socks have a Geelong-style hoops look. The visitors have four changes, with Troy Cook, Antoni Grover, Steve Dodd and Luke McPharlin coming in for Andrew Browne and Dylan Smit, who were omitted, and Roger Hayden and Byron Schammer, both injured.

Thomas puts onus on Milne
If ever there was a footballer made to suit a definition, it is this infuriating figure of a goalsneak who, for the same reasons made clear in parentheses, has found himself on the wrong side of coach Grant Thomas and the St Kilda selection table. With Milne back in the team for tomorrow night's game against Fremantle, Thomas is about to find out whether two weeks on the outer have taught one of his more difficult charges a valuable football lesson. As of yesterday, the coach was confident Milne would return bearing little resemblance to the player kept goalless during his previous two senior appearances. "I can guarantee that if he gets a chance on the weekend he won't be picking and choosing his efforts," Thomas said. "If Milne is picked in our side, I would say with a great deal of confidence that there will be no question over his effort at the ball and man with the ball. I could sign off on that now. He is not silly."

Saints go with familiar names
. . . Milne, with 41 goals this season, gets his first chance since round 18, while Maguire has missed the past six games through osteitis pubis. But midfielder Heath Black will be missing with a hamstring injury, while Leigh Montagna was dropped after last Sunday's 45-point licking from Brisbane. The Saints will monitor big man Justin Koschitzke's foot injury at training . . . Needing a win to play finals, Fremantle was boosted by the return of classy defender Luke McPharlin, back from a broken collarbone along with Troy Cook, Steven Dodd and Antoni Grover. But regulars Roger Hayden (tibia) and Byron Schammer (elbow) are out while Andrew Browne and Dylan Smith were axed.

Saints join 'blockbuster' club
St Kilda will officially be the AFL's newest member of the blockbuster club next year. The league's biggest crowd-drawing club this season, the Saints have been rewarded for their new-found form and attraction in next year's fixture list, which is set to be released in about five weeks. St Kilda will open the 2005 season against Brisbane at the Gabba on the Thursday night before Easter, replacing Collingwood who have played the Lions in the corresponding match over the past two seasons. The Saints will also receive a huge financial boost by playing the Magpies twice next year. Lowly Richmond have had their blockbuster status diminished as they will only play Collingwood once in 2005.

Waldron job stirs interest
St Kilda already has highly-credentialled candidates banging down the door to replace departing chief executive Brian Waldron. Saints president Rod Butterss said last night the club had taken phone calls from potential replacements even before Waldron's resignation became official late yesterday. "With the speculation earlier in the week, we had a couple of inquiries from what would be seriously outstanding candidates," Butterss said. "We just see it as a pretty exciting time for the club. We move on stronger than ever, full of opportunity and hope." Waldron, who has lifted the club's annual turnover from $13 million to $21 million since taking the job in 2002, has decided to take up a role in the corporate world. "I believe it is professionally and personally time to take advantage of my successful tenure with the Saints," Waldron said.
