Saints march into September
St Kilda can look forward to its first finals series since 1998 with plenty of confidence after completing an unbeaten season at its Telstra Dome home thanks to a 17.10 (112) to 12.11 (83) win over a disappointing Fremantle on Saturday night. The Dockers, who looked well-placed with 11 wins after the first 18 rounds, will miss out on a finals berth and finish in ninth place if Essendon beats the lowly Western Bulldogs on Sunday.

Injured Saints destined for Lions
After setting a club record winning streak early in the year, the likely third place was scant reward for the Saints because with two non-Victorian teams finishing above them it means a schedule of interstate finals. St Kilda will go into the first week of the finals with some injury concerns. Dual Brownlow Medallist Robert Harvey (hamstring) was a late withdrawal, Leigh Montagna (hamstring) did not take any part in the second half tonight, while Aaron Hamill and Matt Maguire finished on the bench and also looked decidedly proppy after the match. The Saints remain unbeaten at Telstra Dome for the season, but were below their fluent best tonight.

Mixed injury news, but Thomas still buzzing
. . . Promising young forward Leigh Montagna is definitely out of next week's qualifying final - against either Brisbane or Port Adelaide - after injuring his hamstring against the Dockers while former skipper Aaron Hamill is also in doubt with a knee injury. But on a positive note veteran midfielder Robert Harvey is certain to return after being rested for the match against the Dockers due to hamstring soreness while key pair Matt Maguire (osteitis pubis) and Justin Koschitzke (foot) cast aside any lingering doubts about their fitness with superb performances against Fremantle.

Mixed injury news, but Thomas still buzzing
St Kilda stuttered past Fremantle at Telstra Dome last night, beating the Dockers by 29 points to set up a mouth-watering qualifying final against either Brisbane Lions or Port Adelaide next week . . .

Saints have Finals Fever
. . . Saints midfielder Luke Ball said finals fever had already begun to grip the club. "I think we've only five or six blokes who actually have experienced finals footy, so for the majority of us it is the unknown, it's exciting, but having said that we understand it's another level up," he said. Fraser Gehrig continued his strong goalkicking form, landing four majors to take him to 90 for the season. His effort means Essendon spearhead Matthew Lloyd, who's had a virtual mortgage on the Coleman Medal in recent seasons, will have to kick eight goals against the Dogs to win the honour awarded to the AFL's top goalkicker.

Saints show the will, and the way, to win
At times last night, the Saints produced slick play, generally courtesy of midfield stars Nick Dal Santo, Lenny Hayes, Luke Ball and Brendon Goddard. It contrasted against the chipping game of Fremantle, which often looked haphazard and directionless. The victory was set up in the first 15 minutes of the second quarter. Quick goals from Koschitzke - who kicked two of his three goals for the night in a three-minute burst - Dal Santo and Aaron Hamill broke the game open, with the Saints leading by 31 points at the 15-minute mark of the quarter.

Hurt Lynch out of final
The Brisbane Lions will be without full-forward Alastair Lynch for next week's final – likely to be against St Kilda – at the Gabba. Lynch went off 20 minutes into the third quarter with a right hamstring injury after diving to take a mark that would have set him up for a shot at a fifth goal. A frustrated Lynch, 36, punched the ground on the bench before heading to the rooms for treatment.

Saints play waiting game
St Kilda last night fulfilled its part of the finals equation, but still looks set for a Gabba qualifying final against the Brisbane Lions after crushing Fremantle's September dreams at Telstra Dome. Despite maintaining a comfortable buffer all night for a 29-point victory, the third-placed Saints must rely on Adelaide defeating Port Adelaide at AAMI Stadium today if they are to avoid Brisbane next week.

Saints march in as Freo surrenders
The Dockers wore white at Telstra Dome last night. It was an appropriate change of uniform given the way they have surrendered their finals spot in the past month, but at least they did not quit in what was almost certainly their last match of the season.
