Colossus Gehrig puts Saints on top
St Kilda full-forward Fraser Gehrig booted 10 goals - a personal best - against the Kangaroos to help his side remain on top of the ladder and notch up its 15th win of the season at Telstra Dome on Sunday. The Saints 23.9 (147) defeated the Roos 15.6 (96) in front of a crowd of 41,664, the biggest home-and-away crowd for a match between the sides. St Kilda is now set to be locked in a battle with Port Adelaide for the honour of finishing on top of the ladder at the end of the home-and-away season.

Gehrig a true leader: Thomas
. . . "When he's playing in the sort of manner he has been, he just a tremendously important player for us, he makes all the guys stand taller and he's got leadership qualities that he probably hasn't realised yet, but he's starting to," Thomas said of his full-forward after match. "I think in the past he's underestimated his leadership qualities and how much he means to the playing group, but very definitely in the last month I think that he's had a real soul search about that and he now understands his importance in the team fabric and what he brings to the table. I think he's realising his importance to the team and his efforts are coinciding with that whereas maybe he went through a patch having indiscriminate efforts. Now he probably can see something important in front of us that he can make a valuable contribution towards, and when he's in that frame of mind he's very, very good."

Rampant Gehrig makes Archer look ordinary
. . . Nothing appeared beyond him (Gehrig). As Thomas would say later it was a day when he might have easily kicked 12, 13 or even 14 goals. It's not often you can say 10 was the bare minimum bag, and speak the truth. He kicked three goals in the first quarter by imposing himself on the Kangaroos' defence with irresistible force. Indeed, his presence was so overwhelming that he embarrassed his first opponent Shannon Watt out of the job in the first five minutes and then did what few have been able to do in AFL football over the past decade. He made Glenn Archer look helpless for the best part of three quarters . . . "It's a team game. We all play for each other. It doesn't matter who's kicking them in the end as long as we get a win out of it," Gehrig told Channel Nine.

Contenders' run home

St Kilda's dynamic duo fires again
. . . Thomas called Gehrig "easy to coach", yet admitted he had put up "indiscriminate sort of efforts", another way of saying he wasn't always motivated. "Now he probably can see something important in front of us that he can make a valuable contribution towards and, when he's in that of frame of mind, he's very, very good," he said.

Plenty yet to come from Riewoldt
. . . (Thomas:) Riewoldt ran opponent Drew Petrie into the ground as he searched for the football and while rapt in his development, Thomas said Riewoldt would get very much better. "I think Nick's still got a fair bit to improve," he said. "I had a good, strong talk to him at halftime about how he had been playing, and while he was playing quite OK, he sets such a high standard that I know he wouldn't want to go through a whole game playing like he did in the first half. From the outside, you would've said, gee, he played OK, but he responded in the end with 12 kicks and 12 marks in the last half. Now, while it was a very good display, he's the sort of guy who can improve a fair bit. His kicking can improve, his ground balls can definitely improve and sometimes his leading isn't intuitive. Rooy's a bit "see ball and get ball" and sometimes doesn't run to the right spots."

Thomas flags Frawley's return to Moorabbin
St Kilda would consider offering sacked Richmond coach Danny Frawley a position in season 2005, Saints coach Grant Thomas said yesterday. Thomas said the Saints would consider Frawley, a former champion St Kilda full-back and the club's longest-serving skipper, for a coaching role at the club if he wanted it enough. "For that to happen, two things would have to occur. One is that he has to want it. Two, we would have to have a position available," Thomas said yesterday. "If he really wanted to, and he was desperate, and prepared to walk backwards to Perth to do it, and we had a position available, I think it would be foolhardy for us not to at least talk to him." Thomas said Frawley's history with the club was an asset. "As long as you've got great people in the position, that's the important thing. And if the great person happens to be a passionate supporter as well, well that further enhances it, makes it a plus," he said.

Fraser's perfect 10 shoots down Roos
St Kilda retained top spot on the ladder courtesy of the perfect 10 from Fraser Gehrig, who led his side to a 51-point win over the Kangaroos at Telstra Dome today. Gehrig kicked 10 goals in the Saints' 23.9 (147) to 15.6 (96) win and also took the lead in the race for the Coleman Medal. He now has 81 goals for the season, one ahead of Essendon's Matthew Lloyd. The margin did not reflect how close the game was early, as the Saints kicked 13 goals to four in the second half. Gehrig was awesome throughout and beat opponents Shannon Watt and Glenn Archer, as well as giving off at least three goals to team-mates.
