Harvey: Out of mid-season slump
. . . Harvey said while he was sure the team was out of its mid-season slump and could have easily won the clash, it was still not back in top gear. "We felt we had the momentum halfway through the last quarter but unfortunately we just couldn't finish the job off. In big games we've got to learn to do that," he said. "We're still off our best, definitely. Having said that we've still got a number of players we need to get back in."

Ball moves closer to re-signing
(Ball:) "I'm very happy at St Kilda and the call was towards the start of the year that I just wanted to concentrate on footy and do it at the end of the year. Obviously we're approaching the end of the year and I spoke to the manager the other day and we're pretty keen to get things going now." Hawthorn was one club that made public its keen interest in Ball, the younger brother of Hawk Matthew. "Obviously the brother thing is there so naturally you guys (reporters) are going to throw up those sort of suggestions and because I might have barracked for Hawthorn as a kid and all that sort of stuff. But I think we're past all that, and as I said I'm very happy at the Saints," Ball said.

Jarman attacks Crows
Adelaide out-defended the Kangaroos last week. But the Crows intend to outscore top-four side St Kilda at Launceston's York Park on Saturday. The challenge is on Adelaide assistant coach Darren Jarman to make the Crows attack more efficient, let alone more accurate after their 5.19 return against the Kangaroos at AAMI Stadium. Jarman yesterday accepted the mission to make the Crows less wasteful, taking the task to the training track where he again toiled with one of the most inexperienced Adelaide attacks put up for selection. "Our efficiency is not up to scratch," he said. "It is something we will work on this week because we have to get that right."

AFL decides against fines over umpire criticism
AFL Players Association president Peter Bell and veteran Kangaroos defender Glenn Archer will not be fined by the AFL for their comments about umpiring. Archer said the relationship between players and umpires was at an all-time low, while Mr Bell raised players' concerns about the lack of consistency in umpiring decisions this season. AFL Football Operations manager Adrian Anderson says the league will not be taking action against the pair. However Mr Anderson says the continual criticism of umpires is a concern.

Rohde dumped as Bulldogs coach
The Western Bulldogs have sacked coach Peter Rohde, today confirming he will not coach for the final year of his contract in 2005. Rohde will stay on as coach for the remainder of this season. Western Bulldogs president David Smorgon said he met Rohde last night, when it was agreed Rohde would go for the good of the club and himself.

Pressure on for St Kilda
St Kilda will need to turn around a less-than-impressive record away from Telstra Dome this season when it meets the unpredictable Adelaide in the round19 AFL clash at York Park on Saturday. After a barnstorming start to the season, in which they were undefeated after 10 rounds, the Saints have faltered to slip to third on the ladder, level on points with Brisbane and Port Adelaide with a record of two wins and five losses away from their home ground . . . AFL in Tasmania events manager Noda Zissis confirmed yesterday all seating for the game had been sold but that plenty of general admission tickets were still available. "We've sold 11,500 tickets and there's only standing room tickets left," Zissis said. "The seats sold out last week so we're looking for a good crowd, well in excess of 17,000."

Saints hopeful on Clarke
St Kilda was last night hopeful of Xavier Clarke recovering in time for the finals after scans yesterday revealed a dislocation within his right knee, but no serious damage. Clarke is now expected to miss at least three weeks after his leg bent awkwardly in a contest with Geelong's Cameron Ling on Sunday. Teammate Robert Harvey was nearby when Clarke was hurt. "Just seeing it, I wasn't far away from it yesterday and it was pretty sickening. Having been through a serious knee injury myself, it's a really ordinary feeling seeing that happen. Hopefully, fingers crossed, it's not as bad as that and he gets back maybe towards the finals," Harvey said. The Saints have a number of players who could return from injury this week, with hamstring victims Luke Penny, Troy Schwarze and Jason Gram all up for tests.

Many changes, but umpires the same
My first game was on a Friday night in 1992. In those days, we would've gone for a few beers afterwards and they were late nights. We'd start at 8.30pm, wouldn't be out of the MCG until midnight and it wasn't rare to still be drinking until 5am, and sometimes, when the mood took us, all the way through. Looking back on those times fondly, I can't help believe it was the reason we became so tight at the Kangaroos. Friendships were made and relationships developed. Life's certainly changed.
