Round 14: Saints v Port - York Park
1.10 pm (AEST) Sunday 4 July 2004
Four inclusions for Saints
The St Kilda selectors have named four inclusions - Aaron Hamill, Jason Gram, Sam Fisher and Matthew Ferguson - in an extended squad of 25 for Sunday's match against Port Adelaide at York Park. Hamill, who has been named at half-forward, returns after missing the round 13 clash against Hawthorn with a hamstring strain. Gram is yet to make his senior debut for the Saints while Ferguson has played just the one senior match, coincidentally against Port Adelaide at York Park last season. Fisher has played just the one match this season, against Fremantle in round seven.

Teams: Hamill bolsters Saints
St Kilda will lose none of its forward-line potency against Port Adelaide at Launceston's York Park tomorrow, replacing injured big-man Justin Koschitzke with power forward Aaron Hamill. Big return: Aaron Hamill, who missed the Round 13 match against Hawthorn to rest a hamstring complaint, will start on the half-forward flank. Port Adelaide has brought back tough defender Damien Hardwick, who has been battling a knee injury this season.

Stars to go toe to toe
In what is a mini-final for Port, the AFL match of the round at York Park tomorrow promises some enticing match-ups involving stars Nick Riewoldt, Aaron Hamill, Fraser Gehrig, Gavin Wanganeen, Chad Cornes and Darryl Wakelin. St Kilda has earned the ladder lead with a blistering 11-game winning streak to start the season but lowered its colours to Sydney and the Western Bulldogs before bouncing back against Hawthorn in the last round before the mid-season break. St Kilda coach Grant Thomas didn't hold back after the Saints' loss to the Western Bulldogs, saying his players needed to 'get their heads' right.

Port Adelaide v St Kilda
. . . How Port's defence deals with the league's highest-scoring defence. The key here may not be so much the match-ups, such as former Saint Darryl Wakelin on St Kilda full forward Fraser Gehrig but the tactics the Power uses to block St Kilda's wise preference to play long in the centre corridor and hit "hot spots" in front of goal. Here Port centre half-back Chad Cornes, whose marking is superb, is the key. And of course, the way Port tries to silence former team-mate and St Kilda goalsneak Brent Guerra. Also, how St Kilda deals with outdoor football.

Maguire . . . condition like OP - Saintsational Fan Forum
No Worries :Matt Rendell
Expected wet conditions won't bother St Kilda as it prepares for its vital AFL clash with Port Adelaide at York Park on Sunday. According to football operations manager and assistant coach Matt Rendell the conditions are "just a state of mind". The Saints play most of their games at the Telstra Dome with the roof closed but have become accustomed to a wet ground and slippery ball with their training ground at Moorabbin copping its share of rain. "We don't arrive there till 5.30p.m. on Saturday but we've been acclimatising over here," Rendell said . . . Rendell said the match is shaping as a classic contest between the top-of-the-ladder Saints and fourth-placed Port. "It's a big clash for both sides but we need to keep winning to keep the wolves from the door," he said.

Rain won't bother Power
Port Adelaide star defender Adam Kingsley said his team was ready for whatever wild weather Tasmania could serve up on Sunday, when it takes on AFL ladder leader St Kilda. While strong winds and heavy rain have been forecast for the blockbuster match at York Park, Kingsley said it was nothing the side hadn't seen before. "I think we've got a terrific forward line that we are hoping St Kilda will have trouble matching up on," Kingsley said."We have a lot of players who can play in that area but I guess ultimately the game will be won and lost in the midfield and St Kilda have a magnificent midfield so we are under no illusions it's going to be tough in that area."

Power, Saints and Goo in match-of-the-round
The two highest profile ex-Port Adelaide players face up against their former teammates for the first time in the next two weeks. First up is the hard-hitting small forward Brent Guerra, who with his new St Kilda teammates will travel down to Tassie to host the Power in the match-of-the-round on Sunday. The following week Port Adelaide takes on Carlton at AAMI Stadium, when gun midfielder Nick Stevens will face the Power in front of his old home crowd for the first time. Before training at Alberton on Wednesday, key defender Matthew Bishop said the boys were looking forward to coming up against 'Goo', who has maintained his friendships with a number of the Power boys since being traded last year.

Nick Riewoldt:
Training on Monday was a small shock to the system. Despite having only four days off, I felt a difference. It is a great opportunity to get rid of a few niggling injuries and the mental break cannot be underestimated. We will need to be at our mental and physical best on Sunday if we are to beat the talented and consistent Port Adelaide side. From the Sunshine Coast one weekend, I will be in Tassie the next, so I'm packing a hot water bottle for the game.

Success at Saints prompts plan to rescue the Hawks
First, a note to all those St Kilda supporters and members disappointed that we can no longer act as consultant for the club. As we said earlier this week our work at Moorabbin is done and the AFL has given us another difficult task. Mostly we have gone with the best wishes of the St Kilda community. They have acknowledged the tireless and selfless work we performed. From alerting the public to the curious manner of the appointment of Grant Thomas; the counselling of president Rod Butterss not to attempt to reinvent the football wheel in week one; the demand that the club employ a football manager; the insistence that chief executive Brian Waldron leave the coach's box; the introduction of a rule change after Matthew Capuano was ruthlessly dropped mid-season . . . blah, blah, blah . . . So there it is, a rough outline on how we will monitor, consult and develop Hawthorn over the next few years. If we do half as well with Hawthorn as we did with St Kilda the two clubs may play off in a grand final.

Spare me, Butterss pleads to council
ST Kilda Football Club president Rod Butterss is trying to offload one of his two Brighton mansions. Mr Butterss's smaller $8 million property, in Seacombe Grove, has been on the market since April, but he believes red tape is hampering the sale. The problem: a covenant relating to wall heights and protecting a palm tree. The home, which includes an underground car park for eight cars and a lift into the main house, was built on the former tennis court of his bigger $20 million mansion.

New Thomas deal a week away
St Kilda expects to conclude contract negotiations with coach Grant Thomas by the end of next week according to its chief executive Brian Waldron. Waldron indicated the board, which met on Tuesday, was strongly of the view that Thomas was the best coach for the Saints right now and that both parties were keen to continue working together.

Rendell denies approach to coach Crows
Adelaide is believed to be interested in talking to St Kilda assistant coach Matt Rendell about its vacant coaching position, but the former Fitzroy ruckman yesterday said he had spoken to no one about a senior coaching role. Rendell, highly regarded as a progressive thinker and a key driver behind St Kilda's emergence, said he had given little thought to the possibility of filling a senior coaching role next season.
