Saints look for 'Plan B': Clarke
. . . "That's something we're going to have to work on because teams are going to watch the game and probably try and do the same thing," a disappointed Clarke said after the match. "We came up with a strategy to go around that but that's not our game style and the boys probably aren't used to that sort of game style. We've going to have to try and combat that. With the forward structure we've got and the players we've got there, I think we can come up with some sort of plan to beat it." . . . "Teams are going to want to knock us off and it's going to be harder. We've got a couple of hard games coming up so it's a good challenge for us to bounce back and hopefully show the fans we can play somewhere else other than Telstra Dome."

Thomas admits Saints are too soft
"Out-coached, out-muscled . . . everything," was Thomas' blunt summary of the loss. Capping off a dirty day at York Park, full-forward Fraser Gehrig lost his cool, was booked for striking and finished the match on the bench. Full-back Luke Penny was also reported for unduly rough play after appearing to drop his knees into the back of Gavin Wanganeen.

Tribunal
St Kilda forward Brent Guerra joins teammates Fraser Gehrig and Luke Penny at the tribunal tonight. Guerra was among three players nabbed on video from Sunday's game at York Park in Launceston. He was cited for an opening term clash with former Power teammate Michael Wilson, who faces a striking report from the same incident. Gehrig was reported on the day for striking Matthew Bishop in an off-the-ball incident and Penny for rough play on Gavin Wanganeen. Port Adelaide onballer Josh Carr will answer a charge of striking Saint Aaron Hamill in the first quarter.

Three cited for striking
St Kilda's poor day out against Port Adelaide at Launceston's York Park on Sunday continued to be felt on Monday with forward Brent Guerra reported for striking. Guerra was cited by video reports officer Ian Robinson for striking Power defender Michael Wilson, the incident occurring in the first quarter. Wilson was also charged on video evidence for striking Guerra.

Saints stripped bare by elements of Power
Tasmanians don't see much sun at this time of the year and they tend to do strange things when it happens. So much so that a chap with a big tattoo on his back and wearing nothing more than sunglasses and track shoes politely excused himself through the four-deep crowd on the boundary during the last quarter of yesterday's St Kilda-Port Adelaide match. He then leapt the fence and paraded across half-forward, strode through the centre square and, pursued by several members of the local constabulary, was eventually brought to grief in a tackle by Steven Baker, St Kilda's gritty defender. "You can always depend on 'Bakes' to not let a man through," said an amused Grant Thomas later.

Thomas runs out of patience
. . . Thomas said his full-forward had been too easily influenced by opposition "verbiage". "It's no good getting angry at opponents. We want strong physical aggression at the ball and the man with the ball. He's really disappointed, as he should be. He let himself down and let the team down today and it's up to him to bounce back. But he wasn't on his own. He would have had at least 14 or 15 teammates today," Thomas said.

Saints' halo slips after big loss
St Kilda's credentials as an AFL premiership contender looked in serious question after it crashed to a humiliating 46-point loss to Port Adelaide at York Park today. After winning their opening 10 matches, the Saints had appeared near certainties to win the minor premiership. But today's 14.9 (93) to 7.5 (47) scoreline handed them their third loss in four matches and left them at risk of being overtaken at the top of the ladder by a pack of challengers headed by Melbourne and Brisbane. In turn the result also boosted Port's chances of finishing the home and away season in first place for the third straight year.

Saints held to season low
"The numbers tell us they won the ball first, they were tougher than us, they were harder than us, they maintained possession better than us, they put a lot more pressure on us than we did on them and they were able to dictate terms as a result," (Grant) Thomas said. "Our midfield across the board was terrible, as bad as I'd ever seen apart from Lenny Hayes who was great and showed great leadership and our forward line was pretty insipid apart from Nick Riewoldt, who was tremendous, and Aaron Hamill."

Port Adelaide thrashes St Kilda
In breezy conditions, the teams traded the first four goals of the match but Port took over thereafter, wresting control by kicking six of the next seven. Ruckmen Dean Brogan and Brendon Lade dominated all day, repeatedly pulling down strong marks and consistently feeding their running players, while Chad Cornes and Shaun Burgoyne were unstoppable across halfback. The listless Saints were also smashed in the midfield, where they were powerless to quell the influence of Roger James, Josh Carr and Peter Burgoyne. Matters were even more abject for St Kilda in attack, with star full-forward Fraser Gehrig a victim of his side's countless turnovers and wasteful delivery. Gehrig reflected his side's lack of fire in a display that culminated in his removal from the ground during the third term.

Port power over Saints
Port Adelaide has scored a convincing 46-point victory over league leaders St Kilda in the round 14 AFL match at York Park in Launceston. The Power struggled to shake off the Saints in the opening term but an eight goal to four second half sealed the 14.9 (93) to 7.5 (47) win. Domenic Cassisi starred for the Power with four goals and 21 touches, while Chad Cornes was everywhere with 34 disposals. Dean Brogan impressed in the ruck and across the park, while Roger James (25 touches) and Shaun Burgoyne (24 touches) worked hard all day. Lenny Hayes kept busy for the Saints with 27 touches but they were let down by a lack of consistency in the forward line.

Disgraceful !!!!
St Luke: . . . We all know we 're not a great traveling side at best, even though games won at AAMI & Subiaco go against that grain of thought! But does it really matter? I think Melbourne is the genuine focus game now! The Power in Tassie was just an annoying obstacle we stumbled over without having a good look!

Saints left Powerless
A record crowd at York Park of 19,223, which was predominantly pro-St Kilda, watched as the Saints had no answer for the intense pressure applied by Port in all aspects of the game . . . St Kilda has won nine matches from nine at Telstra Dome this season but just two from five away from its home ground.

'Stiffer' fines for streakers
AFL events manager Noda Zissis has called for bigger fines to discourage streakers interrupting matches at York Park. His call follows yesterday's streak by a man wearing sun-glasses in the last quarter of the AFL match of the round between St Kilda and Port Adelaide. A record crowd for an AFL match in Tasmania of 19,223 got a laugh out of it, but Zissis was not impressed . . . "He actually ran further than some of our players today, which is disappointing," he said. The pale prankster evaded police for several minutes before being tackled by Saint Steven Baker. "You can always depend on Bakes to not let a man through," Thomas said.

Beleaguered clubs respond to their taste of freedom
. . . The St Kilda-Port confrontation at York Park yesterday taught us much. The Saints have lost three out of the past four. They are not invincible as previously thought. Fraser Gehrig has taken himself to some other planet. For the moment communication between player and coach has been lost. Luke Penny is on report for dropping his knees and so he should be. The Saints are not as fierce as they made out. Troy Schwarze, Brendon Goddard, Stephen Milne and Xavier Clarke must toughen up. Trent Knobel cannot carry the ruck. Take Matt Maguire out of defence and you take the defence out of St Kilda. Thomas must find the lid and hammer it back on. St Kilda will not be as good as we thought while they continue to think they are. Williams has brilliantly cobbled together winning teams this season from among the lame and sick. Yesterday they played with a commitment that is grown in the devastation of finals losses. They are Brisbane's greatest threat. Essendon certainly aren't.

Saint does the Cowboy proud
The Cowboy was quite taken with this powerful young bull. Kevin "Cowboy" Neale watched Brent Guerra back into a pack without flinching to take a mark. He saw the strong-bodied kid hoof the ball long for a goal. The bull was Cowboy's kind of player - strong, skilful, aggressive. In Neale's 256 appearances for St Kilda, he'd played the game with a blend of uncompromising ferocity and finesse, too, in the process becoming one of the club's all-time greats. So, it was not surprising that, alongside all the skinny calves on the Canberra paddock, the Cowboy's eye would fix upon this sturdy bull from the Murray. When the under-18 clubs played in Canberra, St Kilda recruiting manager John Beveridge would send the Cowboy, then an Australian Capital Territory resident, along to take a look. In this match between Guerra's team, the Bendigo Pioneers, and the New South Wales-ACT Rams, Neale was struck by Guerra's ample thighs and "hard over the ball" style. "He just did a couple of super-duper things that made me sit up," recalled the Cowboy, now ensconced in St Kilda's marketing department.

Player dies in curtainraiser
A teenage footballer died after collapsing during a high school grand final at Subiaco Oval yesterday afternoon. The 16-year-old Mazenod College student was playing in a match against Clontarf Aboriginal College in a curtainraiser to last night's match between the West Coast Eagles and Geelong. The tragedy occurred in front of crowds arriving to watch the West Coast Eagles match. A St John Ambulance spokesman said the boy had a seizure but last night medical experts were still trying to determine what had caused the collapse.
