Round 13
St Kilda vs. Hawthorn
Telstra Dome Fri 18 June 2004, 7:40 PM AEST
THE TEAMS & INTERACTIVE MATCH-UPS
Schwarze & Blake for Hamill & Maguire
The Saints have made two changes for Friday night's match against Hawthorn at Telstra Dome, bringing in Troy Schwarze and Jason Blake for injured duo Aaron Hamill and Matt Maguire. The Saints have taken no chances with Hamill who failed to see out the game against the Western Bulldogs at the MCG last Saturday with a 'knot' in his hamstring, while Maguire is sufferening from groin soreness. Former Brisbane Lion Jason Gram has earned a promotion to the emergencies along with veteran Justin Peckett and Leigh Montagna. The Hawks have made three changes, including Mark Graham, Nick Holland and Simon Beaumont for Luke Brennan, Robert Campbell and Rayden Tallis.

Spider: Leader of Men!!
Peter Everitt will captain Hawthorn against his old side St Kilda at Telstra Dome tomorrow night. That's despite Hawks' vice-captain Nathan Thompson, who has deputised for the injured Shane Crawford for the past two weeks, declaring he would like the captaincy for the rest of the season. However coach Peter Schwab said last night Thompson was happy to adhere to the club's policy of rotating the captaincy . . . The outspoken Everitt has written tongue-in-cheek about the prospect of facing the Saints in his weekly column in yesterday's Hobart Mercury. " Every player who leaves one club for another feels there's a point to prove against the old one," he wrote " Even myself, at 30 and nearly washed up, I would love nothing more than to kick Trent Knobel's butt all over Telstra Dome."

Push for footy on Good Friday
Collingwood and St Kilda have joined forces in the boldest bid yet for a Good Friday fixture. Both clubs have told the AFL they want to open the 2005 season on what has been the only sacred day on the football calendar. Collingwood president Eddie McGuire and St Kilda chief executive Brian Waldron confirmed the push last night. "We'd like to play the Saints in Round 1 (the Easter weekend)," McGuire said. McGuire, a practising Catholic, has had a change of heart about football on Good Friday. He said people already had a vast range of entertainment available to them on the day, and would welcome football to their choices . . . While AFL approval is far from certain, the move is yet another body blow for Richmond, which has played Collingwood in the opening round in recent years.

Saints go searching for their missing ferocity
. . . Burke said the Saints, who were likely to be without the injured Aaron Hamill but remain confident of the availability of Austinn Jones and Fraser Gehrig, had to be wary of Hawthorn. "I dare say they're thinking that they're more a chance, now that we've lost two, than two weeks ago, when we hadn't lost one," Burke said. "They're probably buoyed by that and that's just another factor that we have to take into account." He said his team had to deal better with the pressure put on it by the opposition. "That's what we've prided ourselves on - especially the first 10 games that we were extremely hard at it - and put a lot of pressure on the opposition, but the last two weeks, we've had the tables turned, so we've got to make sure it doesn't happen again this week," he said. "We have gone from being the hunter to the hunted in the last couple of weeks. Sides have played well against us and we haven't coped well with that pressure."

Injuries: Hamstring may force Hamill out
St Kilda appears certain to lose Aaron Hamill for Friday night's clash with Hawthorn, but Austinn Jones and Fraser Gehrig will play. Saint's pain: Aaron Hamill has a knot in a hamstring. Saints coach Grant Thomas yesterday hinted Hamill would be rested, despite scans showing no serious hamstring damage. "He's an outside chance, but put it this way, we won't be taking any risks with him whatsoever," Thomas said . . .

Gehrig to play: coach
St Kilda coach Grant Thomas said yesterday that Fraser Gehrig did not have a recurrence of plantar fasciitis, the painful foot syndrome that blighted his 2003 season, and he would play against Hawthorn on Friday. But Thomas conceded Gehrig would not be at full fitness, saying: "No one goes on to the ground at 100 per cent." Gehrig's problems started a fortnight ago when he got a kick in the right shin before the Sydney game that had caused some bruising and knotting of tendons. He has been wearing a supportive shoe, a so-called moon boot, to help overcome problems in his lower right leg. His plantar fasciitis problems last year were in his left foot. "He got a kick in that shin. That affects the tendons and the recovery from that is why he was wearing the boot," Thomas said.

Concessions now causing inequity
In the past the Lions have been allowed to pay 110 per cent of the salary cap. In their three-year reign at the top the club has been able to pay its players $1.6million more than all league clubs other than Sydney. That formula has been amended this year. This season the club can pay 109 per cent of the salary, 107.5 per cent in 2005 and no more than $360,000 above the cap in 2006. The Lions are allowed to pay the extra money because the AFL recognises clubs in developing markets are forced to draft players from interstate. Eventually the pull for those players to go home is strong and the Lions must be able to have the facility to match offers from clubs in their original states . . . The go-home formula has been superseded by the stay-together factor. Brisbane has created an environment where players have sacrificed money, incentives and playing opportunities to be part of what might be the greatest dynasty in football history . . . Salary cap concessions were meant to balance out an inequity. Now they create one. The AFL must change its policy. Money must be poured into football in Queensland so it can develop its own players for Brisbane and not into Brisbane players.

Robert Harvey Chat Transcript (16 June 2004)
saints: How do you think the Saints will go against Hawthorn this Friday?
Robert Harvey: I think we will go good ... it is a pretty important game to bounce back after two disappointing weeks.
Matteo: What do you believe contributed to the Saints' loss on the weekend against the Bulldogs?
Robert Harvey: Hard to say - it is a mental thing. I think that we have had two down weeks, but I reckon we can get back to the good form.
Lennys_Girl: Mr Harvey, who do you think is next in line for the captaincy?
Robert Harvey: Fraser Gehrig or Nick Riewoldt maybe...
Balthaz: Hi Harves, do you reckon there is anything the Saints can improve on?
Robert Harvey: The way we bring the ball in to the forward line mainly.

Voss: Staking his own claim
When football supporters hear the word 'Voss', the immediate thought would be toward the Brisbane Lions' three-time premiership captain and Brownlow Medallist Michael Voss. However, these days, it's his younger brother Brett who is putting the Voss name in more newspaper articles than Michael with his leadership in defence, along with his tough as nails aggression for the football. Originally from Morningside, Brett has come a long way since his debut for Brisbane in 1997. In four seasons he managed 35 games and 11 goals but struggled to maintain a regular senior spot. When it was clear that Brett wasn't involved in Leigh Matthews' master plan, Brett took a bold step and nominated for the pre-season draft in 2001. Being selected with the first pick, he was one of many players that year to make the exodus to Moorabbin, along with the likes of Aaron Hamill, Heath Black and Craig Callaghan.
